Share your ‘Struggle Beneath the Surface’ at upcoming Spoken Word night

Friday, March 16th, 2018

The Latinx Heritage Club and Psychology Club invite you to share your take on the theme “The Struggle Beneath the Surface.” Share your story with us at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, in Hoover 105.

Why this theme?

This event will be during Cesar Chavez Week. Chavez was an activist who understood the harsh working conditions migrant workers experienced and the hardships they faced. He was a hero because he fought for better working conditions and pay. Most importantly, he took a stand, combining his personal convictions with the genuine interest of the public against oppressive forces.

These oppressive forces can manifest in many forms: discrimination, poverty, internal struggles, etc. Sometimes liberation happens through speaking out about the raw personal struggles we all endure behind closed doors. The moments we make ourselves vulnerable are terrifying; however, it is in these moments we can relate and come together as a community.

In light of this, Spoken Word will center around the theme “The Struggle Beneath the Surface.” Everyone has a past and has struggled to be who they are. We would like to give individuals a shot at performing poetry to achieve catharsis and a form of personal closure.

At the end of the night we hope our audience will leave with a greater awareness and understanding of “the struggle beneath the surface.”

Want to perform? Email Stephanie Garcia-Cruz (sgarciacruz14@georgefox.edu) by Wednesday, April 4, with your bio (three to four sentences about yourself).

All it takes to get involved are two simple steps:

  1. Fill out this survey so we can learn about who you are.
  2. If you would like a free hour of studio recording time, after the survey, we will send you an Excel sheet to sign up for your session. If your audio track is already mixed, please send it directly to Paige Patterson at ppatteson13@georgefox.edu.

Who are we?
The George Fox Student Mixtape Project is a collaborative student project that started back in the early 2000s. It was revamped last year through KFOX Radio to produce 400 student mixtapes that were given away on Dead Day. With the help of ASC, we plan to produce 800 free mixtapes for the student body featuring selected works and release the entirety of all submissions online.
