Students and staff are invited to attend free performance of ‘The Chimes’

Tuesday, November 14th, 2023

Students and staff are invited to attend a free performance of Charles Dickens’ The Chimes, written by and starring theatre professor Ben Tissell. There will be performances in Wood-Mar Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 27, and Tuesday, Nov. 28 (due to expected sellout of original date).

Synopsis: From Dickens, the greatest holiday writer of all time, comes this tale of hope, family and Christmas cheer. Returning after its popular first run, this fast-paced, imaginative one-man show is perfect for the whole family!

In this classic Dickens story, Toby Veck stands day-after-day in the shadow of a bell tower, forging a bond with the chimes that peel out far overhead. Facing extreme poverty, crime, and the daily difficulties of the world, Toby begins to lose hope – until the magical chimes take him on a journey to the future, renewing his hope and happiness.

For any struggling to find hope in this season, The Chimes is an honest, moving and joyful celebration of the hope of Christmas. The Chimes runs approximately one hour with no intermission.

Tickets are free but must be reserved by visiting this link. If you have any questions, email Ben Tissell at btissell@georgefox.edu.

Consider enrolling in ‘Teaching & Learning with AI’ this spring

Monday, November 13th, 2023

Are you curious about AI, its promise, uses, and dangers? We are all trying to understand how we can make responsible, ethical use of AI in our everyday work, but also whether our career goals or ambitions will need to adjust.

Join History Professor Travis Ross in GEED 285/485: Teaching & Learning with AI this spring.

An interdisciplinary elective available for either upper or lower division credit, this course will critically engage with the past, present, and near future of AI. There are no prerequisites and no expectation that students in the course will know how to program, though students who do — and those who are willing to learn — are certainly welcome.

Together, we will apply AI critically and creatively to real problems, investigating its potential by pushing its limits. How do these models work? What can we make them do for us? What will be left to humans in the future and how can we prepare for the age of AI?

This course will be hybrid, meet in-person Wednesday afternoons from 1 to 2:50 p.m. with asynchronous online components, too. It will be highly collaborative, centered around team- and project-based learning.

If you are curious — even cautiously curious — please inquire with professor Ross at tross@georgefox.edu.

Join discussion with ‘The Oregon Bridge’ podcast hosts tonight

Sunday, November 12th, 2023

How do they do it? How do they relate to their guests from across the political spectrum? How do they keep the podcast so upbeat and civil? What effect are they trying to have on Oregon politics? How much pushback do they get from people in the two major parties? What can we learn from their experience?
