Consider enrolling in History and Film, a new course this fall

This fall, Professor Travis Ross will teach HIST 285B: History and Film. The course will meet once per week on Monday evenings, a single three-hour meeting from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. that will include both a screening and discussion of a film.

The course will focus on representations of artificial intelligence in sci-fi throughout the history of cinema, including a range of films from the U.S. and abroad, from indie films to Hollywood blockbusters, as well as a few television episodes.

The course is a history of film as well as a history of technology and culture through film. It will include background readings about the history of artificial intelligence at the time each film came out, capturing the bidirectional relationship between scientific progress and the cultural imagination.

There are no prerequisites. Feel free to bring popcorn!
