All invited to two Constitution Day lectures

The politics department invites the university community to a pair of Constitution Day lectures next week.

Bradley Watson, the Philip M. McKenna Chair in American and Western Political Thought and co-director of the Center for Political and Economic Thought at Saint Vincent College, will speak Monday, Sept. 16, on the topic “The Living Constitution and the Decline of the Rule of Law.”

Two nights later, on Wednesday, Sept. 18, David Nammo, executive director and CEO of the Christian Legal Society since 2012, will speak on “Religious Liberty and the Rule of Law.”

Bass player needed for worship ensemble

Bruin Community Pantry hours

The Bruin Community Pantry‘s food bank will be open during the following times fall semester:

  • Mondays – 8 to 11 a.m., noon to 5 p.m. 
  • Wednesdays – 8 to 10:30 a.m., 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. 
  • Thursdays - 12:30 to 5 p.m. 
  • Fridays – 1 to 4 p.m. 

The food bank will be closed during university holidays.

Registration for Rocket League team ends tomorrow

We are still looking for more players to join the George Fox Rocket League teams! It is open to all skill levels, and we will be competing in various tournaments. Come to meet new players and improve your game, or just to have some fun.

Remember, if you want to compete for a chance at a $75,000 scholarship, the registration deadline is tomorrow (Thursday) and the competition is on Sunday, Sept. 15, and Sunday, Sept. 22.

Serve Day information: Please note changes this year

Serve Day is tomorrow (Wednesday)! In an effort to underscore our missional convictions around Serve Day, we are implementing some changes in the schedule this year. 

Here is what to expect for Serve Day 2019:

  • 8 to 9:10 a.m. – Bag your own lunch on the quad lawn
  • 9:15 a.m. – Kickoff Celebration on the quad lawn
  • 3 to 4:15 p.m. – Church and Activities Fair in the Bauman/Ross lot
  • 4:15 to 4:45 p.m. – Closing Ceremony at Stoffer Family Stadium (chapel credit available)
  • 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. – Church and Activities Fair (continued) in the Bauman/Ross lot

Lunch is free for all students. Canyon Commons will be open for breakfast from 7 to 8:45 a.m. and dinner at 4:30 p.m. for students on meal plans.

A final confirmation of your Serve Day placement was emailed to you. Please check your email for your confirmed site placement and other important information about Serve Day.

Get off campus and raft the Deschutes River Sept. 27-28

Outdoor Rec and Spiritual Life have teamed up to provide students with an opportunity to raft and camp in Central Oregon the weekend of Sept. 27-28. The trip is geared toward helping students access natural spaces and build community through activity. Experiential chapel credit is available for this outing.  

We will leave campus at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, camp overnight and then whitewater raft on Saturday, Sept. 28. The rafting portion of the trip will be facilitated by YD Adventures. The return to campus will be around 9 p.m. on Saturday.

The trip cost is $35 and includes camping, transportation and food (breakfast and lunch on Saturday). Sign up on IMLeagues.com.

Bon Appetit cafe posts hours for Serve Day

The Bruin Den will be open from 7:30 to 10 a.m. on Serve Day (Wednesday). Stop by and get coffee, pastries, or a grab-and-go before heading off-campus. Another option is to purchase a bag for $6 to go through the sack lunch lines on the quad.

The Bruin Bites and Bridge Cafe will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday). All cafes resume regular hours of operation on Thursday, Sept. 12.

Join Midweek Escapes this Thursday

The second installment of the Midweek Escapes outdoor series is heading to the Willamette River this Thursday afternoon, Sept. 12. This will be an opportunity to explore the river as part of a contemplative experience.

We will meet at the Hadlock Student Center at 3:45 p.m., head to the river to explore the natural beauty of the Willamette, and return to campus by 7 p.m.

The cost is $3 for paddle board or kayak rental through the HSC. Chapel credit is available. Sign up through IMLeagues.com.

Registration is also open for the third Midweek Escapes outdoor series to the Trappist Abbey on Thursday, Sept. 19. Limited spots are available, so sign up soon.
