Meeting new people can be exciting, but be aware that there are people with bad intentions who do use dating apps like Tinder, Bumble, or the many other social meeting apps.
A victim of a crime is never at fault and should not be blamed for their actions. For those who would like to know what precautions they can take in order to reduce the risk of victimization, we offer the following tips:
- If you plan to meet a stranger either on campus or off campus via an online app, let someone know where you are going, who you are meeting, your expected meeting time, and how long you plan on visiting.
- If you feel comfortable doing so, bring a friend along for the first meeting.
- Meet in a public setting that is well lit with others around and drive your own transportation if necessary.
- Do not get in a vehicle with someone you just met.
- Remember, if you ever start to feel uncomfortable, you have the right to end the meeting and leave.
Safety escorts are available through Campus Public Safety 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. If you feel unsafe, please call our office so that we can escort you to your destination (503-554-2090).
