Celebrate Earth Day with Bon Appetit

Friday, April 18th, 2008

Here’s a shocking fact — the food system is responsible for up to 1/3 of global greenhouse gas emissions.  In fact, scientists have shown that dietary choices can equal the difference between driving a fuel-efficient sedan vs. a large SUV.

Bon Appetit  is taking a national leadership position in the care of our environment with our Low Carbon Diet.  Over the next several years, we will be implementing over 20 purchasing initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the highest impact areas of our business by 25 percent.

On Tuesday, April 22nd at lunch time, we will be celebrating Earth Day.  In Klages Dining Room we will be serving menu items that highlight low-carbon food choices.  Each food area will illustrate a key principle of reducing climate change.  You will have extensive choices but will be encouraged to taste new items that are more climate-friendly than some regular features.  In addition to our students on meal plans, we’d like to invite staff, faculty and non-meal plan students to join us and for $6 can enjoy not only a great lunch, but educational materials as well.

We will also debut Bon Appetit’s online Low Carbon Diet Calculator to help you determine the impact of your individual food choices.  This fun, interactive calculator is based on best-available science developed by a multi-disciplinary team of experts.

For more information, visit www.circleofresponsibility.com and www.eatlowcarbon.org

Please contact Denny Lawrence if you have any questions.

Phase II program collects quality items students leave behind

Friday, April 18th, 2008

At the end of every school year, many students leave behind good, usable items, including blankets, clothing, kitchen supplies, small appliances, radios, room decorations, little tables, etc.  In an effort to keep the dumpsters from overflowing and to be better stewards of resources, Phase II was initiated. Plant Services is happy to receive anything that students do not want to take home.

The items gathered are sorted and made available to student summer help and staff, but most of the items are given to different organizations in the local area (Rescue Mission, Goodwill, unwed mothers’ homes, children’s homes, etc.)

Barrels will be placed in the lobbies of the dorms and central living areas (porches of the Weesner, Beals, Hoskins, Munn and Villa Road houses, Newlin Apartments). Please do not donate damaged or soiled items.

Also, please to not place trash in barrels marked “Phase II.” There are drop boxes for your trash located on both sides of campus.

Look for and use these barrels as you prepare to leave at the end of school. Donated items will be stored at Lyda House and will be available to employees/summer students after the first week of May.

Please consider parking alternatives with arrival of track guests

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

George Fox is privileged to be the host school for the Northwest Conference track meet Friday and Saturday, April 18-19. This will greatly impact parking in the Bauman and Fulton Street (Le Shana) parking lots. If you regularly use those lots, we would recommend that staff park in the Wood-Mar/Hoover/Stevens lots along with the east side of Meridian Street.

Commuters should park in the VAC lots. Students with Resident West permits can park on Center and Vermillion streets, in the Pennington lot, by Weesner Village, and on portions of Sheridan Street. Please consult your parking brochure for exact locations. Please leave the Bauman and Fulton Street lots as empty as possible for our numerous visiting guests and athletes. Thank you for your cooperation.
