The campus community is invited to attend the artist talk and closing reception for the “Waiting for Godot” art exhibit on Tuesday, Nov. 18. The artist talk is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Hoover 102, followed by the closing reception from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in Minthorne Gallery.

Come learn how to buy, sell, and finance a house. Willcuts Company Realtors and the Office of Student Life will host a real estate class from 7 to 9 p.m. both Tuesday, Nov. 18, and Wednesday, Nov. 19, in Stevens 109.

Tuesday’s session will cover “Financing and Title + Escrow.” Wednesday’s session will cover “Finding the Right House and Making an Offer.” Topics to be covered:

• How to make an offer
• What does my credit score mean?
• What do I need to buy a house?
• What does this all mean given today’s economy?

Free pizza and drinks will be provided.

Tickets are now on sale for the university’s Christmas Concert, “O Holy Night!,” presented by the Department of Performing Arts Friday through Sunday, Dec. 12-14. This year’s concert features more than 175 musicians from five ensembles in the main-stage performance, and preconcert music featuring six of the university’s chamber ensembles.

Three presentations are scheduled:

Two on-campus performances in Bauman Auditorium
Friday, Dec. 12, 7:30 p.m. (preconcert music begins at 7 p.m.)
Saturday, Dec. 13, 7:30 p.m. (preconcert music begins at 7 p.m.)

Off-campus performance at Village Baptist Church in Beaverton
Sunday, Dec. 14, 2:30 p.m. (preconcert music begins at 2 p.m.)

Tickets may be purchased online now at music.georgefox.edu, or (two weeks prior to the event) at the University Box Office by calling ext. 3844. Tickets are $10 for adults; $8 for seniors and George Fox alumni; and $6 for students and children. All faculty, students and staff receive one free ticket, available for pick-up in the University Store. The concert features reserve seating, so if you have a favorite seat, make sure you save it now.

The university community is invited to hear Margaret Becker, Christian songwriter and musician, perform at 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, on the Newberg campus (specific location TBA). Her visit is being hosted by Shalom, ASC and Spiritual Life. The concert is free.

The Portland Center Library is hosting an art show by Kathleen Jones through December. In the artist’s words: “I strive for a feeling of peace in my paintings. My experiences of hiking in the woods of Oregon and Glacier National Park provide the inspiration for these pieces. I have come to understand more deeply that we are created to love and respond to beauty.”

The university community is invited to see the show free of charge.

Westmont College in California has experienced significant damage due to a fire that began Nov. 13. The Office of Student Life will be sending a large poster to Westmont Wednesday, Nov. 18. Please visit the third floor of the Stevens Center before then to write messages and prayers for the Westmont community.

The university’s Department of Performing Arts is hosting two concerts in Bauman Auditorium this week. On Monday, Nov. 17, a Band Invitational Concert, featuring the Newberg Community Band and the George Fox Symphony Band, will begin at 7:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, Nov. 19, the Chehalem Symphony Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. The concert will feature selections from Verdi, Schubert, Mendelssohn and Otto Nicolai. The orchestra, comprised of students and members of the community, will present its first concert with new director Ben Brooks.

Admission is free to both performances.

All are invited to take a break from academic stress and join us for Storytime in the Student Life Office, located on the third floor of Stevens, Friday, November 14 from 1:30-1:45 p.m.  This week’s featured story is Owl Babies, a story about transitions and growing up.

As you know, we strive to purchase as many fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables from local farmers as possible. We’re blessed to have an abundance of great farmers surrounding Newberg producing wonderful organic and sustainably grown tomatoes, lettuces, broccoli, cauliflower and many other items.

It’s been brought to our attention that a few students this past week found little green worms in the salad from our salad bar. In looking into this, we discovered this is the time of year many bugs hatch and start feeding. Because the greens and lettuces we’ve been purchasing are organic, our farmers don’t use pesticides to chemically control these little bugs and worms, so there’s a greater potential for them to be present in the items we purchased. Although we double-wash our lettuces, apparently some of them made it through our washings, so to those who accidentally found them in their salads, we sincerely apologize.

Since the growing season is officially over in the area, starting this past Monday we began purchasing non-lettuces from California, which should alleviate the problem.

The Office of Spiritual Life would like to send out a thank you to the ladies who came and participated in the “Women’s Conversations” on Tuesday evening. The campus community is welcome to participate in an eight-week independent research project on fitness guidance. One group will be working with an acclaimed fitness program (the DeLorme Method), the other working with a uniquely developed program. Members of both groups will feel good and look great afterward.

Urban Services is starting the first ever “All I Want For Christmas drive” to bless our homeless friends during the holiday season. To participate, fill a used mug with various items like mints, candy, scarves, hats, lotion, shoelaces, and anything else you think might be useful and/or fun as a simple little gift.

There are drop-off boxes in:

LeShana, Coffin, HMS, Ed, Penn, and soon to be in the Suites and the Bruin’s Den.

The university community is invited to learn the basics of American Psychological Association (APA) style from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, in Hoover 102. If APA is giving you trouble, come to this workshop and learn from two knowledgeable Academic Resource Center consultants.
