The final two events of the university’s annual event, “Closing the Gap: Addressing the Mentality Behind Sex Slavery,” are scheduled Wednesday and Thursday. The event is hosted by the university’s International Justice Mission.

On Wednesday (Nov. 16), a panel of speakers from the Portland metro area and from George Fox faculty will gather in Hoover 102 at 8 p.m. On Thursday (Nov. 17), the event concludes with a free concert by advocacy band Jubilee in the Foxhole at 8 p.m.

Hiding: The Final Cut
Thursday, Nov. 17, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Join us as we bring attention to the plight of those in North Korea, hosting a group from the organization “LiNK” (Liberty in North Korea) for a screening of the documentary film Hiding.

Hiding tells the story of how, in the mid-1990s, more than 1 million people died in North Korea – and hardly anyone noticed. Millions starved, hundreds of thousands were imprisoned in concentration camps, and tens of thousands crossed borders seeking food, money, protection and even freedom that they never knew existed. North Korea was, and continues to be, a land with virtually no freedoms – of speech, assembly, religion or movement.

LiNK was organized out of a desire to spread awareness of the atrocities occurring in North Korea. The organization’s official line is “redefining the North Korea crisis through creative storytelling, while providing emergency relief to North Korean refugees and pursuing an end to the human rights crisis.”

The Center for Peace and Justice is joining in support of an advocacy event, “Human Circles,” at Waterfront Park in downtown Portland this Wednesday, Nov. 16, beginning at noon. In light of a looming congressional deadline to enact major budget cuts, people are gathering at events called “Human Circles” in symbolic support for programs most at risk of being cut.

The event has the support of a broad coalition of Christian denominations and organizations, who have affirmed a document, “A Circle of Protection: A Statement on Why We Need to Protect Programs for the Poor.” To learn more, visit this website.

The goals are to make the poor visible in the debate, stand in prayer for important programs that help the most vulnerable in society, and inform Congress that cutting such programs is not the answer to budget concerns. The Portland gathering is within sight distance of the offices of Sen. Jeff Merkley.

In Portland, the Oregon Center for Christian Values is helping host the event in partnership with Bread for the World and the Office of Life, Justice and Peace of the Catholic Archdiocese of Portland.

Are you using a United States Postal Service tray to stow away items around the house or office? Do you use any to transport department mail on campus? If so, it’s time to return them to the owner.

Postal inspectors say that, effective Nov. 26, they will resume their efforts to recover missing and stolen Mail Transport Equipment (MTE) and also seek prosecution against offenders. The resumption of criminal enforcement comes after the postal service offered a two-week amnesty period, encouraging anyone who was in possession of postal service equipment to return it – no questions asked.

“Theft of postal equipment is a federal crime. Replacing missing equipment last year cost the postal service $50 million – money that it can ill afford,” said Guy Cottrell, chief postal inspector. U.S.P.S. says previous efforts to recover MTE and prosecute offenders have been successful.

In 2008, postal inspectors launched the Equipment Recovery Project, an effort to return MTE that leaked out of the postal service network. Since then, postal inspectors have recovered almost 200,000 pieces of MTE, including pallets, trays and tubs, worth more than $4 million.

If you have any U.S. Postal Service tubs or trays, please bring them to Mail Services so they can be returned to the U.S.P.S. Thanks for your cooperation.

The university’s International Justice Mission chapter will host its annual event, “Closing the Gap: Addressing the Mentality Behind Sex Slavery,” this week. The four-day event will address the issue of sex trafficking.

Here is the schedule:

• On Monday night (Nov. 14) the movie Born Into Brothels will be shown in Bauman Auditorium at 8 p.m.Students can receive chapel credit for attending.
• Tuesday and Wednesday will feature panels of speakers from the Portland metro area and from George Fox faculty in Hoover 102 at 8 p.m. both nights.
•  On Thursday, the event concludes with a free concert by advocacy band Jubilee in the Foxhole at 8 p.m.

Alpha Psi Omega, the university’s theatre honors society, is hosting a “slam” poetry event on campus at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9. In the wake of our recent cultural celebration week the library is putting together a display to explore the different cultural winter holiday traditions. We need your help! If you have any items that the library could borrow from November 11  until November 23 please contact us!

In the display case we like to feature a mix of written information and three dimensional artifacts. We are looking for several items to help illustrate the information. If you have something that is used in a winter holiday please help me share it with our George Fox Community. The items will be displayed in a locked case in the library along with information about various holidays around the world.
