Expert on environmentalism speaks on campus Wednesday

Steve F. Hayward, the F.K. Weyerhaeuser Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, will deliver a public lecture, “Mere Environmentalism: A Biblical Perspective on Humans and the Natural World,” from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11, in EHS 102.

Hayward is the author of numerous books, including Churchill on Leadership, The Real Jimmy Carter, and a two-volume biography of Ronald Reagan. He has an upcoming book titled The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Presidents. Hayward writes regularly for popular publications such as The Weekly Standard, The National Review, and The Wall Street Journal.

Hayward visits as a guest of the Department of History and Political Science. Lisa McMinn (Sociology) and Michael MacLeod (Political Science and International Studies) will offer responses to the lecture.

Most recently, Hayward began writing for the political/general-interest blog Power Line. His expertise in environmentalism, law, economics, and public policy have garnered him attention and led to him testifying before the Committee on Energy and Commerce at the United States House on two occasions.

The performing arts department wishes to extend the invitation for you to attend the sixth annual Bösendorfer Artist Series concert this Thursday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium. A free ticket for each student and employee is available for pick-up at the box office prior to 5 p.m. the day of the event. The concert features professor Kenn Willson on piano and alumnus Richard Zeller, a world-renowned baritone.

University closes April 6 to observe Good Friday

The university’s offices and libraries will be closed on Friday, April 6, to observe Good Friday. The Newberg library will be closed Friday and Sunday but will be open between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday. The Portland Center library will be closed Friday through Sunday.

Show your support for film students at annual Fox Film Festival

The 14th annual Fox Film Festival is next weekend! Come out to the historic Newberg Cameo Theatre at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 13, to watch student films on the big screen! Tickets are $4 per person (or $6 for two) and available at the door.

The following day, April 14, come to Bauman Auditorium at 6 p.m. for the award ceremony (hosted by Robby Larson and Valerie Rogers) or stop by half an hour earlier to see the film-makers make appearances in their red-carpet attire. Saturday’s event will include short videos interspersed between each presentation to award winners.

Run for Romania on April 22 benefits June Serve team

Sign up today for Run for Romania! Run for Romania will be held at 9 a.m. on Sunday, April 22, at the Newberg campus track. It is a 5K walk that will benefit the June Serve team’s trip to Romania and Moldova this summer.

In this year’s June Serve, a group of George Fox students and faculty that will partner with the organization Word Made Flesh, which seeks to serve Jesus amongst the poorest of the poor in Romania and Moldova.

Newberg is hosting a Relay for Life on Friday and Saturday, June 22-23, and you are invited to be part of a George Fox team!

The event is scheduled at Joan Austin Elementary and the Austin Sports Complex. Relay for Life is a community-wide overnight walking event to support the American Cancer Society. This year’s theme is “Give Cancer the Boot!” Join fellow members of the George Fox community as we walk to honor cancer survivors, remember people we have lost, and also raise funds and awareness to help save lives!

Multicultural Returnee Leadership Scholarship – Due April 4

Reminder: Multicultural Leadership Scholarship applications are due today (April 4) by 5 p.m.!

The Multicultural Returnee Scholarship Competition
A brand-new scholarship will be awarded starting fall 2012. Four $2,500-per-year renewable scholarships will be given to returnee students who meet the following requirements:

  • Considered a domestic undergraduate student
  • Actively involved in leadership at GFU
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Willingness to be engaged in diversity requirements

To qualify, you must not already be on a multicultural scholarship (any that partner with GFU; if you have questions, contact Shelley Yonemura). You must submit the following to Student Life no later than Wednesday, April 4, at 5 p.m.:

Two copies of a printed leadership resume that includes the following:

  1. Tell us what makes you qualified as a Multicultural Leadership Scholar
  2. Cumulative GPA
  3. Two names of GFU faculty/staff who would recommend you

An e-mail will be sent to determine if you move to the second round. Round Two will take place on Thursday, April 12, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Engineering Expo returns to Newberg campus April 20

The university’s engineering department will present its annual Engineering Expo on Friday, April 20, between 3 and 6 p.m. in the EHS Atrium on the Newberg campus.

The expo will include project displays, a robotics competition and lab demonstrations. Also featured will be projects from the program’s Senior Design and Servant Engineering teams for companies and community organizations such as Daimler, CUI, VibeTech, NASA, 219 Technologies, Providence, Engineering World Health, 5-Rock Ranch, Medical Teams International, Oregon Commission for the Blind, Mennonite Central Committee, Aprovecho, and the Newberg Rotary.

In addition, high school design projects will be featured. Refreshments will be provided. All are welcome!

With finals week quickly approaching, and lots of projects due, security is noticing more of you studying later at night.

We wanted to let you know that the Bruin Den is open all night with cardlock access for you to study in, and the study room by the library is also open all night Monday through Thursday.

Unless you have cardlock access to a lab in an academic building, they are closed to students once they are locked down at night. Please use the spaces provided if you have a late-night study session coming up!
