Urban Outreach plans trip to poverty workshop Saturday

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

Hey Everybody!

This Saturday, April 20, we have a neat opportunity to hear from DJ Vincent. He works down in Salem with homeless populations and low-income families. He will be giving a presentation at Northwest Free Methodist Church from 9 a.m. to noon.

Here’s the basic format of the presentation he is giving:

Section 1

  • Awareness exercises to make people aware of judgment and build empathy
  • Goal: Lower judgment and build empathy

Section 2

  • Communication tools: training on oral & print culture
  • Goal: Connect and communicate more effectively

Section 3

  • Advocate tools: approach & examples
  • Goal: Learn how to come alongside

Please contact me if you are interested in going or have any questions. I need to get a head count for the church. Let me know if you need transportation.

I’m really excited about this talk that he’s giving. This is something I’ve been praying for for a while – an opportunity to really dive into some deeper questions about Urban Outreach and poverty within our own community.

I hope that some of you can come.

God bless!

WSU professor presents research seminar this Monday

Wednesday, April 17th, 2013

The engineering department invites you to attend a research seminar entitled, “Fasteners as Diagnostic Sensors in Structures,” presented by Dr. David Pollock of Washington State University. He will be with us from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. this Monday, April 22, in Lemmons 13.

Summary

Connections are critical load-transfer components in all structures. The adoption of mechanics-based yield limit equations for bolted and nailed connections in timber structures in the early 1990s furnished a mechanism for understanding connection behavior associated with extreme loading events. In particular, the formation of plastic hinges in metal fasteners (as modeled by the yield limit equations) provides ductile structural behavior during high seismic and wind events.

The detection of plastic hinges in fasteners following an overload event can be used to (1) determine the magnitudes of overload and structural displacement that occurred, and (2) assess internal structural damage. Ultrasonic inspection of bolts and (modified) nails in surviving structures provides useful techniques for detecting damage that is not apparent during visual inspections and estimating residual structural capacities.

For any questions or further information, contact Kristin Bontrager at kbontrager@georgefox.edu.

Engineering department hosts research seminar Friday

Wednesday, April 17th, 2013

The engineering department invites you to attend a research seminar titled, “Hypar Roofs: A Servant Opportunity for Students, Researchers and Professionals,” presented by Doug Schmucker, PhD, PE. Join us from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, April 19, in EHS 102.

Presentation Description
Dr. Schmucker will present an example of servant engineering via a joint project between TSC Global and Engineering Ministries International (eMi). TSC Global (tscglobal.org) is a U.S.-based, for-profit, social enterprise developing innovative products for global housing solutions; eMi (emiusa.org) is a faith-based organization that mobilizes building design professionals to provide design services to communities in need across the world.

In an appropriate technology transfer project, the eMi team examined the feasibility of using TSC’s Hypar Roof product. Typical eMi clients include missionaries, faith-based medical facilities and educational campuses. Dr. Schmucker has served with eMi as a volunteer in a variety of capacities over the past 13 years and has practiced as both a professional engineer and professional educator over a nearly 20-year career.
