The Daily Bruin

1) Students with junior status (62+ credits) or who will be 20 or older prior to the first day of classes (Aug. 25, 2014) will be eligible to live off campus. Refer to the Off-Campus Information page for additional details.

2) Students living with their parents need to complete an Application to Commute and return it to student life office before July 31.

3) Students who intend to live on campus need to pay a $150 nonrefundable housing deposit in order to participate in housing selection.

Details about the housing deposit:

• You will need to have a current account (as determined by Student Accounts) in order to pay your housing deposit.

• You will be able to pay your deposit through March 20 in Student Accounts, located on the first floor of the Stevens Center.

• The deposit may be refunded if you withdraw it prior to housing selection (March 17) or do not go through housing selection. If you withdraw the deposit prior to selection, you will not be able to participate in this process.

• Once you have received a housing assignment, your deposit will be applied toward fall charges.

• The housing deposit will be forfeited if you opt to live off-campus after being placed in housing or do not return to George Fox in the fall of 2014.

•  If you have been asked to live with an RA or in a house on campus you still need to pay a deposit to secure your housing assignment.

• Note: Students who are eligible to live off-campus and do not submit a housing deposit will automatically be designated as off-campus for the fall of 2014.

4) The Housing Selection Form will be available online from March 17 through March 21. One person from each group will complete this and enter your housing preferences. Beginning March 24, groups will be ranked by average credits and placed accordingly. Housing assignments will be posted through the Housing Form once all groups have been placed on or before April 11.
5) In order to be considered for Le Shana Hall your group will need to have six people. Groups of five will not be considered for Le Shana. Groups of six that are not able to make it into Le Shana may be placed in one of the following locations: two adjacent apartments, two adjacent suites or three adjacent residence hall rooms.

The Department of English invites you to the Faith and Culture Writers Conference taking place on the Newberg campus Friday and Saturday, March 7-8. A number of well-known writers will be on campus, including Sarah Bessey, Tony Kriz, Sarah Thebarge and Deidra Riggs, among others.

The event also offers the opportunity to meet with literary agents and editors. The conference is for those seeking inspiration in their writing, and in their lives. Student and faculty panelists will come together at this week’s Shalom to discuss feminism and gender equality in the context of modern Christian culture. Join us at 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, in the Cap and Gown Room.

How do we restore wholeness between feminism and the church? Is feminism important to men? Where does the tension over gender equality manifest itself on campus? Join us on Thursday to hear panelists provide insight to these questions.

You are invited to a celebration of the Lunar New Year this Saturday, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m. in the west end of Klages Dining Room.

We will have Chinese food for dinner, followed by entertainment from George Fox international students, a video of the Chinese new year celebration, and other festivities.

Do tests drive you crazy? You read the book, did the assignments, studied the night before, and still didn’t do as well as you wanted on your test. What else can you do? This Friday, Feb. 7, the Academic Resource Center will host a session, “How to Get A’s on All Your Tests (or at Least Become a Better Test-Taker),” from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. in EHS 125.

Rick Muthiah, associate director of learning support services, will cover several strategies for improving performance on tests.

Got jeans? The university’s Lip Sync winners, The Campbells, are hosting a “Jeans for Teens” charity event now through Feb. 15!

We are collecting jeans of any condition – blue, black, ripped, new, etc. – for a youth-oriented, nonprofit organization called DoSomething. This is a reminder that students need to pay a $150 non-refundable housing deposit to participate in housing selection (info available at this link) for the 2014-15 academic year. After housing assignments have been made this deposit will be held and applied toward future charges.

Housing deposits can be paid in Student Financial Services (SFS) on the first floor of the Stevens Center through March 20. Before you pay you should be aware of the following:

1. Your student account must be paid in full. If on a payment plan, your February payment (or March payment if after March 1) must be received and any amount not covered by your payment plan must be paid.

2. Regardless of who pays the deposit, each student must stop by SFS. If the deposit is accepted you will receive a Housing Deposit Confirmation slip. This slip is needed as a record of payment.

3. A payment received in any other way won’t be processed as a deposit, but instead will overpay the account or be applied toward the next monthly payment. SFS routinely refunds over-payments, so if you get a refund check you are not expecting please stop by to confirm the status of your deposit.

All are invited to the second installment of the spring Liberal Arts and Critical Issues lecture series this Monday, Feb. 3, when Amanda Marshall, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon, speaks from 7 to 8 p.m. in Hoover 105. The presentation ties into our theme “State of the World.”

Marshall will speak on the topic “Human Trafficking: Modern Day Slavery in America,” in which she will discuss the plague of human trafficking from an international, national and local perspective. As part of her presentation, she will include recent research and responses to child sex trafficking in Oregon.

‘Pink Zone’ Date: The “Pink Zone” National Girls and Women in Sports Day will be Saturday, Feb. 8, when the Bruin men and women take on Lewis & Clark. A story in Thursday’s The Daily Bruin incorrectly reported “Pink Zone” was tomorrow; please note this date change!

James Project, our student-led community service outreach ministry, is going out to serve 5 Rock Ranch this Saturday, Feb. 1.

Who: 5 Rock Ranch is a James Project favorite. Located outside of Yamhill, 5 Rock is a beautiful ranch and ministry dedicated to “restoring faith, hope and love to the fatherless and the floundering through Jesus Christ.” (Check out more about their ministry here: 5rockranch.com).

What: They need our help splitting wood, possibly building something for some little chicks that were donated, and other chores around the ranch.

Time: It’s going to be a bit of a longer day, serving from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. It takes about 40 minutes to drive out to the ranch, so meet in the OMC office at 7:50 a.m. SHARP!

*Lunch, tools, gloves, etc will all be provided!
