U.S. Postal Service now accepting mail to Canada

The Canadian postal strike has ended. All classes of mail to Canada are now being accepted by the U.S. Postal Service. Keep in mind that it will take some time for the Canadian Postal Service to catch up on all the mail that has not been distributed.

If you need something delivered in a timely manner, you may want to use the Global Express Guarantee service offered by the local U.S. Post Office during the next few weeks.

HR sponsors an early Independence Day celebration on Friday

It’s time for our sixth annual Red, White and Blue Jeans Day. In recognition of Independence Day and the upcoming long holiday weekend, you are invited to wear casual attire in patriotic colors this Friday, July 1.

At 3 p.m. the all-American dessert – apple pie a la mode – will be served on the Stevens Center plaza for Newberg employees. We invite you to join us for this sweet treat and a time to visit with colleagues. Summer student employees are also invited.

Portland and Boise employees are also being provided a similar afternoon break.

Alumni Relations invites all to Mariners game on July 16

The evening begins with a catered barbecue dinner in Lookout Landing, followed by the game against the Texas Rangers. The dinner starts at 5:30 p.m. and the first pitch is at 7:10 p.m.

Mail Services announces FedEx cutoff time changes

The cutoff time at Mail Services has changed for FedEx packages. You must have the package at University Mail Services by noon each day (this includes FedEx letter envelopes and boxes).

If you miss this FedEx cutoff time, you can still drop the packages at the Newberg Mail Room located in the Springbook Plaza at 1102 N. Springbrook Road. They are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Their telephone number is 503-538-5555.

Just a reminder of other cutoff times for letters and packages at Mail Services:

  • 9:45 a.m: Portland and Salem center mail
  • 2:15 p.m.: U.S. Mail
  • 3:15 p.m.: UPS

Year-end purchasing information

The end of the fiscal year has arrived and with it comes a few notices about year-end purchases.

  • Please remember that if you order merchandise, it must physically be here before July 1 in order to be charged to your 2010-2011 budget. Goods and services received after June 30 will to be charged to the 2011-2012 budget.
  • All POs created before Jan. 1, 2011, will be closed Thursday, June 23.
  • Starting Monday, June 27, Andy Dunn will be contacting purchase requesters to discuss the next steps for open POs.

Mail service to Canada temporarily suspended

Due to the Canadian postal strike, only one mailing service is available to Canada: Global Express Guarantee. This service has to be done at the Newberg Post Office located on the corner of Blaine and First.

The U.S. Postal Service has temporarily suspended all other Canadian mailing services (First Class, Priority, etc.). Please do not include Canadian mail in the outgoing mail for your department. It will be returned to you.

Other carriers such as UPS and Fed-Ex are still operational for packages to Canada. Keep in mind that additional paperwork (such as three copies of an invoice) is required for international package shipping.

Real estate professional Dan Foster speaks on campus June 28

Real estate professional and business coach Dan Foster will speak on campus on Tuesday, June 28, at the Newberg meeting of the Christian Chamber of Commerce of the Northwest. The meeting is from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in the Villa Academic Complex.

Foster is branch manager for the Newberg and Sherwood Teams of Prudential Northwest Properties, the largest locally owned real estate company in the Portland metro area. His entire team was chosen by consumers as one of the top 12 real estate offices in all America for service excellence and overall customer satisfaction.

Foster is also a business coach and has been certified through the Coaching Leader System of Building Champions, Inc. He currently helps facilitate the sales and personal development training in his company. He also leads a monthly webinar that features advice from sales professionals and leaders throughout the real estate industry.

If you normally park in the Stevens, Wood-Mar or Hoover staff parking lots, we’d like to ask you to give up your spots Thursday through Saturday and park in the Bauman or Pennington lots – or on Sheridan, North or Meridian streets.

Tilikum hosts two more summer family retreats

It’s not too late to sign up for the last two Tilikum summer family retreats.

On July 8-10, Tilikum will host single moms for the Single Moms Family Camp. Jan Cammack, a single mom herself, will speak on “The Lord as Our Shepherd.” This is a special retreat designed to give single moms a chance to get together with other moms in a relaxed camp setting. Summer staff counselors will be on hand for the weekend to lead special activities for the kids. Challenge course activities will be available, and a hayride and campfire with s’mores is an evening highlight.

For fathers and daughters, a Father/Daughter Weekend is scheduled Aug. 5-7. Brad Lau, father of three daughters, will speak, and activities include a fishing derby, a challenge course (with the big zipline, little zipline and climbing wall), swimming, a waterslide, canoeing and archery.

Wheeler will be closed June 8-9

All of Wheeler will be closed from 8 a.m. Wednesday, June 8, through Thursday, June 9, due to toxic chemicals being used on the floor. This includes the Fitness Center and the gymnasium. The facility will reopen at 6 a.m. on Friday, June 10.
