The university community is invited to a Faculty Research Forum this Friday, Sept. 21, at 10:40 a.m. in Hoover 105 on the Newberg campus.
Kent Yinger, a professor of New Testament at the seminary, will present “Ruminating on the Fruit of the Spirit: Origin and Theological Significance of a Pauline Phrase.” Kent will discuss some of the theological conclusions that have been drawn from Paul’s use of the phrase “the fruit of the Spirit” in Galatians 5:22.

Come hear Justin Schneider share his experiences as an intern in Thailand for the International Justice Mission (IJM). IJM is a global organization that fights human trafficking. Justin will be speaking and answering questions at the IJM club meeting tonight (Wednesday) from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Cultural House.

Your files are now stored in Google Drive, and you can access them anytime at drive.google.com or by clicking on the word “Drive” in the black Google Toolbar. Just like before, you can upload, edit, share, and create files online. But with Google Drive, you can access your files wherever you are, from any device. And you can work with even more file types by installing Google Drive apps.

Know students interested in a career in pharmacy? Encourage them to come hear from Jeff Ruder from the College of Pharmacy at Oregon State University. Jeff will conduct a Doctor of Pharmacy admissions workshop focusing on preparing successful applications for the OSU PharmD program at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24, in EHS 217. He will also discuss pharmacy careers in general.

All are welcome to the next Christian Chamber of Commerce meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 25, in the Villa Academic Complex. Jonathan Booth, a native of Great Britain who formerly led Care for the Family – a British sister organization of Focus on the Family – will speak from 7:30 to 9 a.m. on what it means to be a significant Christian business owner.
Booth led a missionary organization for 10 years that specialized in giving students an experience in overseas missions. In 1989, he became the first chief executive officer of Care for the Family and worked alongside Executive Chairman Rob Parsons and Focus founder Dr. James Dobson. Booth has also helped build a 48-bed nursing home, chaired several charity boards, and recently began work on a social justice project with Legal Shield in the U.S., specializing in assisting small businesses (up to 100 employees).
Coffee, tea and pastries will be available at the meeting, which is free for chamber members who R.S.V.P. at cccnw.net. A $5 donation is suggested from non-members and guests who R.S.V.P. For full information, go to the chamber’s website or call 503-928-8354.

The International Club is starting up Chinese classes this semester beginning tonight (Tuesday). Feel free to join us in the International Center/Cultural House from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
We will spend the first 30 minutes getting to know each other and review what we have learned before. The main learning time is from 7 to 8 p.m., so if some of you can’t be there until 7 p.m. you can still attend the class.

The university’s Science Outreach Program will be offering science classes for children in our community beginning the week of Sept. 24. These classes allow students to learn about the wonders of God’s creation in a laboratory using equipment not readily available elsewhere. These classes are experiential, hands-on and lab based.
The age range for classes varies from 6 to 15 years. Each class is held once a week for a seven-week session; they are completed within one semester. Class size is limited and topics vary each session and semester.

This is a reminder that Anthony Gill, a professor of political science at the University of Washington, will speak at 5 p.m. tonight (Friday) in Hoover 105.
Gill specializes in political economy and religion and politics, with an emphasis on church-state relations, religious liberty and religious economies. He will speak on the topic “Why Christians should care about Liberty . . . and not just Religious Liberty.†Responses will be provided by professors Nate Peach and Tom Head.

All are welcome to the third installment of the “Islam and the West” Liberal Arts and Critical Issues series on Monday, Sept. 17, in Hoover 105. The session runs from 7 to 8 p.m. and features Ronald Abdul Rahim Hubbs, a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.
His lecture, entitled “A Brief Overview of Islam in America,” will discuss the story of Islam in America and cover topics such as Muslims and slavery in America, Muslim missionaries to the U.S., and Islam today in this country.
Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions. The same lecture is presented from 4:40 to 5:40 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.
