Questions about osteopathic medicine? Luke Rauch (lrauch@western.edu), a representative of COMP-Northwest, will be on the Newberg campus Thursday, Nov. 29, to answer questions about medical school admissions, curriculum and more.

COMP-Northwest is an osteopathic medical school located in Lebanon, Ore., and is part of Western University of Health Sciences, located in California. Luke will hold a presentation at 2:45 p.m. in EHS 217 and will be available for drop-in at a table on the second floor of EHS between 12:30 and 2:20 p.m.

An all-employee meeting is scheduled for this Thursday, Nov. 29, at 3:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.

For those at the university’s regional sites, the meeting will be available at a stream site that you can access from MyGFU. Simply log into MyGFU and click the “Community Meeting Link” located under “Staff Resources/Faculty Resources.” It is the bottom link in that section. The link will take you to all the information relating to community meetings and include a live-stream link (the password changes each meeting) and a chat room link.

Applications for the faculty Professional Learning Community “Teaching for Student Learning: Effective Strategies for the University Classroom” will be accepted through Monday, Dec. 10.

The PLC, originally scheduled for this fall, was moved to spring semester. Several faculty are already enrolled, but there is plenty of room for more! The PLC is designed to enhance teaching, increase student learning, and deepen reflective practice.

The facilitator is Gary Sehorn, assistant professor of education. Sessions will be held in Newberg from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. on the following Wednesdays: Jan. 30, Feb. 6, Feb. 20, March 6, March 20, April 10 and April 24. Each participant will receive an honorarium of $325 and a copy of the book How Learning Works.

If you haven’t had a chance to order your 20-pound box of delicious oranges from a baseball player yet, there’s still time. The order goes in on Tuesday morning, Nov. 27.

The Bruin Den will be closing after lunch at 1:30 p.m. this Wednesday, Nov. 21, due to the Thanksgiving holiday. The Villa Cafe will close at 2 p.m. on Tuesday and will close at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Both cafes will reopen on Monday, Nov. 26, at their normal time.

With the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, Bon Appetit will be changing hours for those students who will be staying on campus. Here is the schedule:

The third faculty “Coffee & Conversation” of the fall, titled “Collaboration: Shifting to Hybrid Teaching,” is set from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. the Wednesday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 28, in Hoover 104. Melanie Springer Mock and Gary Tandy will share their experiences in leading the discussion.

This “Coffee & Conversation” session features the collaborative approach Melanie and Gary are using with their Writing 110 students, including implementing a hybrid instructional approach. Students spend 75 minutes with their instructors each week, and then complete the rest of their work online, keeping public blogs, commenting on their peers’ work, reading essays by professional writers, and managing their documents through Google Drive.

• Come if you are using hybrid approaches.
• Come if you are exploring hybrid teaching.
• Come if you have all the answers.
• Come if all you have are questions.
• Come if you just want to have some free coffee and goodies and listen to the discussion.

“Selling Strategies for a Recovering Economy” will be the topic when Jeff Schneider speaks at the monthly Newberg meeting of the Christian Chamber of the Northwest on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at the Villa Academic Complex. The meeting is from 7:30 to 9 a.m.

“The things that used to work in the pre-recession economy may not work like they used to,” said Schneider, who will outline new concepts for effective sales.

Schneider is president of Portland-based Schneider Training Solutions. He is an authorized agent for Sandler Training, which Schneider describes as the leader for innovative training solutions for sellers and managers nationwide. Schneider has trained thousands of salespeople and sales managers up and down the West Coast, on topics relating to sales, sales management and personal development.

Coffee, tea and pastries will be available at the meeting, which is free for Chamber members who R.S.V.P. at cccnw.net. A $5 donation is suggested from non-members and guests who R.S.V.P.

Philosophy professor Phil Smith will speak on “varieties of faith” at an “Intellectual Feast” today (Tuesday) from 4 to 5 p.m. in the second-floor Hoover Lounge (Room 250). Sponsored by the Religious Studies Department, the talk is part of Phil’s longer work – Why Faith is a Virtue – soon to be published by Wipf and Stock.

The library will be on holiday hours for the Thanksgiving holiday. Monday and Tuesday we will be open our regular hours of 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. On Wednesday, Nov. 21, our hours will be 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We will be closed Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and will reopen the evening of Sunday, Nov. 25, from 6 to 10 p.m.
