The university will host the Portland Youth Philharmonic, led by Conductor and Music Director David Hattner, for a Monday, Feb. 25, concert in Bauman Auditorium. The 7:30 p.m. performance is free and open to the public, and no tickets are required.
The evening will feature Rachel Graves, winner of PYP’s 2012-13 Concerto Competition, performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64. The program also includes William Bergsma’s Chameleon Variations and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, ‘Pathétique.’
The concert is a free preview of PYP’s winter concert to be held in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Saturday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m.
Dr. Henry F. Schaefer III will give a scientific, but lighthearted, lecture tonight (Tuesday) entitled “Third Age of Quantum Chemistry.” Dr. Schaefer, a world-renowned scientist, is the director of the Center for Computational Quantum Chemistry at the University of Georgia.

Dr. Doreen Dodgen-Magee will address issues related to technology in our lives when she comes to campus March 4-6 as guest speaker for the Spring Theological Conference.

Dr. Dodgen-Magee is a licensed psychologist, truth communicator and Jesus follower. She had one of the first computers in her class when she was a graduate student “a million years ago,” and was the last person in her family to get an iPhone. She is a reluctant geek and an avid reader of research.
Doreen is passionate about helping people experience life in all its richness, complexity, boredom and wonder. She fills her own time with seeing clients, speaking around the country, taking African dance lessons, doting on her kids (a college sophomore and high school senior), practicing contemplative prayer, and attempting to find the most shocking (and truth-telling) YouTube clips to share at places like George Fox University.

Paul Watson, director for Cityteam International’s recovery center in Portland, will outline his agency’s innovative outreach efforts and how they are applicable to local businesses and ministries when he speaks Tuesday, Feb. 26, at the monthly Newberg meeting of the Christian Chamber of the Northwest. The meeting is from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in the Villa Academic Complex.
Watson split his childhood between Hong Kong, Malaysia, India and Singapore while his parents planted churches as career missionaries for the Southern Baptist Convention. Watson earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature at the University of North Texas and minored in business administration.
In 2007, through Cityteam (cityteam.org), Watson started training and coaching church planters and church planting organizations worldwide. In 2010, he traveled 75,000 miles and trained people in the United Kingdom, France, Indonesia, Malaysia, Lebanon, Egypt, Germany, and through the U.S. In 2011, he traveled 85,000 miles.
Watson last year moved to Portland to take his current position. Cityteam Portland provides 72,000 meals a year. It helps, on average, 84 people per night, 365 days per year, to receive a shower, clean clothing and a safe place to sleep. Watson and his team seek to meet the physical needs of the homeless, addicted and alcoholic while seeking to catalyze disciple-making movements in the Northwest.

The university community is invited to the annual Bösendorfer Artist Concert Series, featuring Italian pianist Gianluca Luisi, this Thursday, Feb. 21, in Bauman Auditorium. This marks a return to the university for Luisi, who will perform a series of J.S. Bach and Franz Liszt pieces – as well as a duet piece, Three Preludes by George Gershwin, with professor Kenn Willson – on the university’s Bösendorfer “Imperial†grand piano.
Luisi, who has performed at New York’s Carnegie Hall and at renowned venues around the world, will perform a 7:30 p.m. concert. All George Fox employees and students are entitled to one free ticket they may pick up at the box office in the Pennington House (Portland Center students and employees may call 503-554-3844 to reserve your ticket). Additional tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for seniors and alumni, and $6 for students/children. Tickets are available for purchase online at this link.
The program’s first half includes a series of Bach Fugues, as well as a performance of Beethoven’s Sonata Op. 31 #2 ‘The Tempest.’ The second half features the Gershwin piece and four Liszt compositions. The event concludes with a performance of Chopin’s Polonaise Op. 53 Eroica.
Luisi also will hold a master class at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Bauman Auditorium, where he will coach piano performance majors. The public is welcome to attend the class at no charge.

Research papers can seem overwhelming, but following a step-by-step, organized approach can make your life much less stressful. This Friday, Feb. 15, the Academic Resource Center is hosting a session, “Steps to Writing a Successful Research Paper,” that will walk through those steps and guide you to campus and Internet resources to help make you a research pro.
