The university’s Department of Mathematics is hosting the annual Pacific Northwest Section Meeting of the Mathematical Association of America in mid-March.

As part of the event, we invite everyone to the opening lecture, “Geometry of the Earth and Universe with The Simpsons and Futurama,” by Dr. Sarah Greenwald, professor of mathematics at Appalachian State University, at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 17, in Canyon Commons. The event is free and geared toward students and the public.

Did you know that the animated shows The Simpsons and Futurama contain hundreds of humorous mathematical and scientific references? A few of these references connect to the geometry of spaces, and we’ll use them to explore some historical and current theories relating to the earth and universe during an interactive talk.

Popular culture can reveal, reflect and even shape how society views mathematics, and with careful consideration of the benefits and challenges, these programs can be an ideal source of fun ways to introduce important concepts and to reduce math anxiety (see SimpsonsMath.com).

The Apologetics Initiative and the C. S. Lewis Initiative invite you to a special presentation by Dr. Paul Lorenzini’s, “C.S. Lewis’s The Abolition of Man Eighty Years Later: An Engineer’s Perspective,” at 5 p.m. on Monday, March 13, in Hoover 103.

Eighty years ago, Lewis published his most highly regarded book, The Abolition of Man, in which he critiques the secularization of Western cultures and warns that, unchecked, the consequences for modern humanity are significant and destructive.

By comparing Lewis’s projections with modern cultural critiques, Dr. Lorenzini asks how a revived view of Lewis’s analysis might inform a modern apologetic. All are welcome to join us for this thought-provoking presentation.

We will discuss systemic inclusion in the workplace, explore belonging and how it is related to burnout in the workplace, moral injuries in healthcare work, and how to outline a plan in small and large groups for creating inclusive organizations that protect from moral injury.

The Maker Hub’s Millermatic 210 is a wire feed metal inert gas (MIG) welder that is meant for light industrial use.

Metal inert gas is a welding process in which an electric arc forms between a consumable MIG wire electrode and the base metal. This then heats the base metal, causing them to melt and join. Along with the wire electrode, a shielding gas feeds through the welding gun which shields the process from contaminants in the air.

This technique is the easiest and most common type of welding, which makes it perfect for those learning to weld. This welder is capable of welding carbon steel as well as stainless steel. Check out this video to see how it works. Visit the Maker Hub’s Wiki Page for more information.

A student ace is simply an expert on a piece of equipment who helps train other students on the usage of that equipment and gains extra privileges within the Maker Hub.
