Emergency procedures available on iGFU

Tuesday, August 13th, 2013

Security services would love to make you aware of another excellent resource on iGFU. After you log on to iGFU on your smart phone, computer or tablet, select “University Resources.” One option is “Emergency Procedures,” and after you click on that, you can choose the emergency and  read some concise information on what to do.

This is extremely helpful if you aren’t in your office or classroom and are unable to view the Emergency Response Guides hanging on the walls. Be sure to check it out before you need it, and also familiarize yourself with the Emergency Response Guides posted around campus, as they contain more detailed information.

Host homes needed for Chinese educators in early October

Monday, August 5th, 2013

The School of Education (soon to be “College of Education”) will be hosting a group of Chinese educators from Chengdu from Sept. 22 through Oct. 12. While they will be staying most of the time in a motel, they have also specifically requested that we provide a home-stay experience. The dates of the home stays will be Saturday, Oct. 5, through Wednesday, Oct. 9 (four nights). This will allow them some time to be included in their host family’s weekend activities.

Ideally, two or more would be placed per home, but some could be placed individually, as space allows. Host families are asked to provide sleeping accommodations and meals (except lunch on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday). They will also need transportation to and from campus on weekdays. Each host family will be given $100 per guest to help defray costs.

If you are interested in hosting one or more guests from Chengdu, or have questions, please contact Sondra Creason at screason@georgefox.edu by Monday, Aug. 26. Please feel free to forward this information to others who may also be interested.

Host families needed for new international students

Sunday, August 4th, 2013

The university is expecting approximately 55 new international students this fall. Our desire is to bless their lives, not only with a quality education, but also to introduce them to caring people who are a reflection of the reality of Jesus Christ within them.

Rather than house these students in empty dorm rooms during orientation, we are looking for about 25 families who would be willing to have up to two international students stay in their home the nights of Aug. 21-28. Students will be engaged in orientation all day Aug. 23 and Aug. 26-28. They would be free to be with the families the entire weekend of Aug. 24-25.

Families are asked to provide breakfast and dinner. Lunch will be provided on campus during orientation. We also ask families to provide transportation to George Fox between 8 and 8:30 a.m. and pick students up at approximately 5 p.m. Host families will receive a stipend to help defray some of the costs of meals and transportation.

Our students’ feedback is that staying with a host family is a very meaningful experience for newly arrived, uncertain and anxious students beginning their new life in the U.S. We also recognize the impact of this experience is not confined to the students’ lives only. Our host families attest of the great blessing these gracious international students have been to them, too. Often relationships developed with host families continue throughout the time the students are at George Fox and into the future.

If you are interested in serving as a host family, please contact Dianna McIntyre (dmcintyre@georgefox.edu, 503-554-2649) or Alex Pia (apia@georgefox.edu, 503-554-2643). If you know of others who might be interested, please let us know so we may contact them.

FoxTALE upgrade planned in late August

Wednesday, July 31st, 2013

FoxTALE will be upgraded from Moodle version 2.2 to version 2.4 from Sunday, Aug. 25, at 8 a.m. to Monday, Aug. 26, at 8 a.m., to stay in alignment with updates at moodle.org. FoxTALE will not be available during this time. No preparation is required by faculty. (Please note: We have changed the schedule for this event).

Here are some of the highlights of the new version:

  • All icons will change. See the mapping from old to new icons (http://goo.gl/WxzRw).
  • Assignments will be enhanced and have a new look and feel. There is only one type of assignment with many customizable features. See the new assignment features (http://goo.gl/nKbMA).
  • Existing assignments will be automatically converted to the new format. No action is required.
  • Drag and drop files from your computer onto your course home page. The files will be added as resources.

Also, sign up for one of the FoxTALE labs we are hosting Wednesday, Aug. 28, in Newberg and Thursday, Aug. 29, at the Portland Center.

Old FoxTALE available until Aug. 31: This is a reminder that old FoxTALE (foxtale19.georgefox.edu) will be available until Aug. 31. If you have additional course sites that need to be copied from old FoxTALE to new (current) FoxTALE, please contact the IT Service Desk.

If you have any questions, please contact the IT Service Desk.

Please check your vehicle registration

Tuesday, July 30th, 2013

Now is a great time for staff and faculty to update their vehicle registration before the fall semester begins! To do so, log on to myGFU and select “Self Service.” Next, click on “University Forms” and the “Vehicle Registration” link should pop up in the middle of the page. After you’ve clicked on that, you can see the vehicles that are currently registered to you. If you no longer have a vehicle, just click on the minus sign to the right of the vehicle info and it will be deleted. To add another vehicle(s), click on the “add another vehicle” box and input the information. The last step is to e-mail Nadine Kincaid with your vehicle changes so your parking permit can be taken off a previous vehicle and reassigned to the new one.

You can purchase an additional permit for just $5 cash at the Security office. Finally, if your permit is taped/stapled/glued together, just bring the pieces to the Security office and we can get you a new one on the spot! Portland Center employees should register their vehicles if they visit the Newberg campus frequently. If you come just once a semester or so, then please come and get a temporary permit at the Security office when you arrive on campus. If you have any questions, call us at ext. 2090 or e-mail Nadine Kincaid (nkincaid@georgefox.edu).
