Valley Repertory Theatre, a local nonprofit theatre company, will kick off its fourth season of live theatre with the production The Whipping Man by Matthew Lopez. The play opens Oct. 10, and all performances will be at the Newberg Masonic Lodge, 402 E. Sheridan St., in Newberg.
In recognition of the Civil War’s 150th anniversary, Valley Rep is hosting a special lecture and performance on Friday, Oct. 17, when Kerry Irish, professor of American history at George Fox, will introduce the play with a special historical presentation at 7:30 p.m., with the performance immediately following. There is no additional charge for this pre-show event.
The show runs for three weekends. Evening (7:30 p.m.) performance dates are Oct. 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25. Matinee (2 p.m.) performance dates are Oct. 12, 19 and 26. Doors open at 7:10 p.m. and 1:40 p.m., respectively.
The Sunday matinee performances on Oct. 12 and 19 are “Pay What You Will.†More information can be found at valleyrep.org.

Come to “the Bon” for dinner tonight (Tuesday) between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. as we celebrate our annual Eat Local Challenge Day. Our chefs will be preparing an expo menu item during dinner that is sourced entirely from within 150 miles of campus.
This year, in honor of our “Farm to Fork” program’s 15th anniversary, Bon Appetit is giving back to the partners who have helped to make us who we are, this time to “Fork to Farm.” Our company is awarding 10 $5,000 grants, two in each geographic region, that our vendors can use to grow their business.
In addition to enjoying a delicious locally sourced meal, you can help choose the winners by visiting our information table and voting on your favorite of the finalist’s proposed projects. Winners will be announced on Sept. 29. You can read all about the fork to farm grant finalists here.

The university’s Creation Care Committee invites you to join us for a community celebration of the autumn equinox this Thursday, Sept. 25. Work putting the garden to bed will begin at 4:30 p.m. and a potluck dinner will follow at 5:30 p.m. The garden is located on a plot of land behind Coffin Residence Hall.

Join us tonight (Monday) as Mark A. Noll, PhD, the Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame, presents the lecture “The Challenges for Christian Learning: Looking Back, Looking Ahead” at 7:30 p.m. in Wood-Mar Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
Noll is the author of numerous books, including The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind and The Civil War as a Theological Crisis.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 23-24, the International Club will host a booth in the Bruin Den from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to raise funds for a Kenyan Sunday School/missions organization. There will be handmade headbands, bracelets, earrings, purses, handbags and dresses you can purchase or order.

The session runs from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and features Mariam Ali, from the Islamic Center of Portland, and Nathan Lewis, pastor at Evergreen Presbyterian Church. They will discuss “The Islamic and Christian Views of Mary, the Mother of Jesus.”
The same session is presented from 5 to 6 p.m.; however, it is recommended that the general public attend the evening session, if possible.

Join us next Friday, Sept. 26, when Michael Ward, PhD, professor of apologetics at Houston Baptist University and director of the C.S. Lewis Centre in Oxford, England, presents the lecture, “The Heavens are Telling the Glory of God: C.S. Lewis, Narnia and the Planets,” at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium. There is no charge to attend.
Ward is a leading expert on the works of C.S. Lewis and the author of Planet Narnia: The Seven Heavens in the Imagination of C.S. Lewis. He is senior research fellow at Blackfriars Hall in the University of Oxford and co-editor of The Cambridge Companion to C.S. Lewis. He presented the BBC television documentary, The Narnia Code (2009). As an Anglican clergyman, he served as chaplain of St Peter’s College at the University of Oxford from 2009 to 2012 and as chaplain of Peterhouse at the University of Cambridge from 2004 to 2007.
The lecture is sponsored by the William Penn Honors Program. A reception immediately following the lecture will be held for those interested in learning more about the honors program.

Forward Edge International is hosting a dinner in Portland at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18! Forward Edge is an organization that sends short-term mission teams around the world. George Fox has sent teams to Nicaragua and Colorado with this organization and will continue to partner with Forward Edge, particularly with Winter Serve and Summer Serve coming up.
If you’ve gone on trips with Forward Edge, or have an interest in what Forward Edge is doing, this will be a great time. You’ll get to hear about the different projects going on and from speakers from their different locations, including New Orleans and Nicaragua.
