Embrace Ministries is hosting a baking party, and you’re invited! Join us from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. this Sunday, Nov. 22, for a baking fundraiser in support of Child Protective Services.

Anyone who enjoys baking and/or is interested in supporting local CPS workers is welcome to join us. If you can, please bring a box of some kind of baking mix (muffins, brownies, cookies, etc.). We will provide oil, eggs and all the cooking supplies (bowls, spoons, paper cups for cupcakes, etc.). We will also provide supplies for making cards. There will be Christmas music and free hot chocolate to fuel inspiration.

CPS workers have some of the most physically, mentally and emotionally taxing jobs, and are rarely thanked for their work in protecting vulnerable children every day. With the added stress of the holiday season, this is the perfect time to show our appreciation for their hard work by making homemade treats and cards and delivering them to the local child welfare office in Yamhill County.

If interested, email Mikayla Greenwell (mgreenwell12@georgefox.edu) for the address where we will be doing baking. If you can’t make it to the party you are also welcome to make treats on your own (a floor/house-baking party?) and contact Mikayla to get them delivered. We’ll meet in a house within walking distance of campus, but if you would prefer to set up a ride in case of poor weather, contact Mikayla.

David and Debby Thomas, missionaries to Rwanda, Africa, with Evangelical Friends Mission for the past 20 years, will speak in chapel today (Tuesday) as part of the university’s annual Quaker Focus Week.

While in Rwanda the Thomases were involved in many aspects of ministry, including leadership training, national church organization leadership, church planting, translation, starting a small school, starting two businesses, and holistic community development. During their last eight years in Rwanda the Thomases especially focused on Discipling for Development, a form of holistic community development that combines spiritual and physical aspects of transformation.

Tuesday’s message (10:50 a.m., Bauman Auditorium) will focus on bringing transformation by living as children of light. David and Debby will share about their years of being involved in whole-life transformational development in Africa and encourage students to bring transformation into their own society by living as children of light.

In addition to their chapel presentation, the Thomases also will speak in Paul Anderson’s History and Doctrine of Friends class (Wednesday, Nov. 18, 8 a.m., Stevens 101) and Spiritual Formation class (Thursday, Nov. 19, 2:50 p.m., Stevens 209).

The George Fox community and the public are welcome to attend any of these events.

Tonight (Monday) Portland fashion designer Myriam Marcela will be at the Chehalem Cultural Center from 6 to 7 p.m. to talk about her work, her inspirations, and give advice and insight into the world of fashion. She is the latest guest of the university’s Art Talk series this semester.

Myriam was last year’s UpNXT winner and Mercury favorite. She is best known for renewing garments and transforming them into unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. Unconventional prints and patterns add to the complexity of her work. She is described as one of Portland’s most innovative apparel designers. You can read more about her work here.
