Know of students who need help as a new semester gets underway? In an Academic Resource Center-sponsored workshop, “Mischief Managed: How to Start the Semester Off Well,” ARC Coordinator Hannah Adderley will cover topics that include time management, building relationships with professors and developing study strategies.

The workshop is scheduled for this Thursday, Jan. 21, from 10:50 to 11:35 a.m. in Lemmons 8. Encourage students to attend.

University closed for MLK Day Monday

The university’s offices, libraries and bookstores will be closed Monday, Jan. 18, to observe the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Also closed will be the Fitness Center on the Newberg campus.

Plan to attend winter musical, ‘The Spitfire Grill’

Come support our theatre students at this winter’s musical presentation of The Spitfire Grill, directed by Rhett Luedtke.

Performances are in Wood-Mar Auditorium on Jan. 28-31 and Feb. 4-7. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. with the exception of the two Sunday matinees (Jan. 31 and Feb. 7), scheduled as 2 p.m. matinees.

Tickets are free for students for the two Thursday shows (Jan. 28 and Feb. 4). Employees are entitled to one complimentary ticket. Please bring your student or employee ID to the door when you attend the show. Additional tickets are $14 for adults, $10 for seniors 65 or older, and $8 for children under 12.

Tickets may be picked up/purchased at the Bruin Store or one hour prior to each show in Wood-Mar Auditorium. They are also available online at theatre.georgefox.edu. A synopsis of the show is also online.

MLK commemoration event is this Monday at cultural center

Join the community of Newberg as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and celebrate his legacy with a free program featuring a talk by Johnny Lake of Northwest Christian University and performances by local musicians and artists, including two of our very own students.

This year’s commemoration will be held at the Chehalem Cultural Center (415 E. Sheridan St.) from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18. An informal social hour with refreshments will also be held prior to the program, from 5 to 6 p.m.

Nominate seniors for CW Perry Servant Leadership Award

Do you know of a deserving senior who demonstrates outstanding services as a servant leader on campus or in the community? You can honor that person and the activity of voluntary service by nominating him/her for the CW Perry Servant Leadership Award.

The trustees of the Barney II and Moore Foundations have established the CW Perry Servant Leadership Award at George Fox University to reward leadership in the area of community and ministry service.

Only seniors (graduating in April 2016) are eligible for award consideration. Up to four $1,000 awards will be given annually. Each award recipient will be required to set aside $250 of this gift to the charitable organization of his or her choice. The remaining $750 will be distributed to the award recipient in the form of a cash award.

The aim of this award is to promote the ideals of servant leadership in the George Fox University community.

Please note new standard mileage rate

The Internal Revenue Service has issued the 2016 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business.

Beginning on Jan. 1, 2016, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car will be 54 cents per mile for business miles driven, down from 57.5 cents for 2015.

Please make sure you use the correct/current Expense Reimbursement Request Forms. Turn in separate sheets for 2015 and 2016 mileage. These forms are found at this link.

Career workshop series begins with kickoff event tomorrow

Come to the kick-off event for @GFUbizcareers, a career-focused series of workshops held on seven Fridays throughout spring semester. These workshops are sponsored by the College of Business and the IDEA Center and will include lunch.

The kickoff event is tomorrow (Friday) from noon to 12:50 p.m. in Hoover 103 and will provide excellent advice for your career-building efforts! A professional career coach will share what you need to know to help you prepare for and land a great job in your field.
