Over the next few weeks, first-year students have been asked to contact a faculty member.
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to help each student enrolled in LIBA 100 make a meaningful connection with a faculty member during their first semester and to gather information and to seek your thoughts as an expert on a topic they are researching for the writing studio.
The Task
Students are asked to set up a 10-minute interview with a faculty member to happen before the eighth week of the term. Students will come to the meeting with a set of questions they developed in their writing studio.
The Process
Students should meet with at least one other faculty member besides his or her LIBA professor – preferably someone who teaches in a discipline they are interested in.
If a student has already a declared major, they should have a faculty advisor listed in her or his student record. This would be a good person to connect with.
If they don’t know what their major is yet, then they are asked to talk with a faculty member in any course they are taking.
To meet with the faculty member, they are asked to:
- Find out where his or her office is and check their office door to find out when they have scheduled office hours
- Find out if they are able to come back during their posted office hours
- Come by during office hours, then we have asked them to email the professor and request another meeting time
We have also suggested that they check with the administrative assistant in the department office. In some cases, administrative assistants can schedule appointments for students to meet with particular faculty members.
Questions? Contact Polly Peterson at ppeterson@georgefox.edu.

On Thursday, Oct. 20, at 10:20 a.m., the university will participate in The Great Oregon Shake Out, an exercise designed to test the school’s emergency notification systems as well as create dialogue among the George Fox community on how to be personally prepared should an earthquake occur.
While the potential earthquake hazards depend upon your location, you could be anywhere when an earthquake strikes – at home, at work, at school or even on vacation. What we do now will determine our quality of life after our next big earthquake. Are you prepared to survive and recover quickly?
The Great Oregon ShakeOut is an annual opportunity to practice how to be safer during big earthquakes: “Drop, Cover and Hold On.” The ShakeOut has also been organized to encourage us to review and update emergency preparedness plans and supplies and to secure our spaces in order to prevent damage and injuries.
Stay tuned each week, as we will provide a link to resources to help you get ready.

Join Bruins LEAD tonight (Thursday) to hear Maco Hamilton, our men’s basketball coach, speak on “How to Conduct Yourself With Class and Servant Leadership.â€
You don’t have to be an athlete or coach to be part of Bruins LEAD. It is simply an opportunity to develop your leadership skills. We will take basic leadership concepts and spend one hour diving into details of how to develop responsible and respected leaders.
Each week, you will get to hear from one of our coaches on the following topics:
Sept. 29 – Maco Hamilton on “How to Conduct Yourself With Class and Servant Leadershipâ€
Oct. 13 – Mike Meek on “How to Inspire Your Team and How to Build Winning Team Chemistryâ€
Oct. 20 – Branden Thompson on “How to Get Your Teammates Back on Trackâ€
Oct. 27 – Jessica Hollen on “How to Manage Team Conflictâ€
All sessions take place from 8:40 p.m. to 9:40 p.m. in Lemmons 8.
While some of the content may be specific to athletics and teams, we feel strongly that every person will end up working in a team at some point in their lives, and this information can be relevant for everyone on campus.
If you were unable to attend the first two sessions, that’s OK! Join us for week three. Probably most important … there will be snacks!
Questions? Please contact Kelsea Meyers at kmeyers13@georgefox.edu.
