Provost Samek among guest speakers at Oregon Nutrition Day event Friday

George Fox Provost Linda Samek is among the guest speakers at the third annual Oregon Nutrition Day seminar, scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 19, at the Oregon Health & Science University Auditorium.

The event features representatives from organizations working to develop, implement and advocate for nutrition programs in their communities. Attendees will learn about “veggie prescriptions” and community-supported agriculture programs, nutrition as a preventative measure, and advocacy to prevent food insecurity.

The event is open to anyone interested in nutrition as a foundation for building healthy communities. The $20 registration fee includes a light breakfast and boxed lunch.

Preregistration is required and can be done at ohsu.edu/mooreinstitute or by calling 503-494-5829. The auditorium is located at 3181 S.W. Sam Jackson Road, in Portland.

  • Friday through Sunday, May 19-21: C.S. Lewis Academy will rent Wood-Mar Auditorium to host its school theatre production at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
  • Saturday, May 20: A short ceremony to dedicate the sculpture “Treasure” will be held near the sculpture by Pennington Residence Hall at 11 a.m., followed by an invitation-only reception.

Openings still available for First Aid/CPR/AED classes this summer

Employees and students: Summer is a great time to get trained in First Aid/CPR/AED! We would love for every department to have somebody trained in these skills. There are still a few openings in the following classes, and each class is split into two morning sections from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to allow ample time to practice your newly learned skills.

Sign-ups and payment are on the Security Services website, and the cost is just $45. Each class must have a minimum of four people to hold the class, and the two-day classes cap at eight people. Grab your friends and coworkers and sign up soon, as they are first-come, first-served!

After you select “Bruin Den” from the left-most drop-down menu labeled “Cafes,” scroll down to the “Breakfast Specials” or “Lunch Specials” and access the information by clicking the links “View additional breakfast/lunch favorites” and “View breakfast/lunch condiments and extras” under their respective headers. Then simply click the nutritional information link under the menu item of interest and see a complete breakdown for that item.

End-of-Year Reminder for Deposits and Petty Cash Reconciliations

End-of-the-fiscal year deposits to be included in this year’s budget must be in Finance no later than Friday, June 30. Checks dated prior to June 30, 2017, must be deposited in the current fiscal year.

Please look around your desks and file cabinets to see if there are any lingering items that need to go to the bank. If you are taking vacation during the July 4 holiday, please send your deposits over BEFORE you leave. If you should have any questions about deposits, please contact Heather Groenlund at ext. 2173.

Final petty cash reconciliations for this fiscal year are due in Finance no later than Friday, June 30. Please remember to submit all receipts, cash, and reconciliation reports before this deadline. Please plan ahead and send these over before you leave, if you will be taking vacation over the July 4 holiday. If you have questions about petty cash protocols, please contact Jen Klapp at ext. 2170.

Sticking around for the summer? Want some healthy, local, organic produce? Want to get to know some Newberg community members and other George Fox students, faculty and staff? Stop by the community garden! Individual plots and communal gardening options are available. (Going on Juniors Abroad? Feel free to stop by when you return.)

We’ll be gardening together on Saturdays in May from 1 to 3 p.m., and continuing throughout the summer on a weekday to be determined. Stop by to check it out, or sign up for the whole summer. The membership fee is $10/student or $15/George Fox staff, faculty or community member. The garden is located on the corner of Crestview and Villa roads.
