The contest, sponsored by the Office of International Student Development and Intercultural Resource Center, is open to all George Fox students and employees. Photos will be judged in three categories: people, landscape, and architecture and culture. All photos must be taken outside the U.S.
The prizes will be $50, $25 and $15 cash (for first-, second- and third-place winners) in each category. Participants may submit up to five photos total, with a maximum of three photos in the same category.
The top-10 finalists for each of the three categories will be hung in the Steven Center’s atrium for voting. Please send your JPG format photos to this link by Wednesday, March 6. Photo contest guidelines can be found here.

All are invited to the university’s annual Dalton Lecture at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 11, in Bauman Auditorium.
This year’s lecture, “Two Degrees of Separation: Climate Change and the Pursuit of Truth in a Post-truth World†will be presented by Richard L. Lindroth, the Vilas Distinguished Achievement professor of ecology and recent associate dean of research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Lindroth’s presentation will explore the fundamental premises of science, how humans engage with facts, and how to improve science communication across ideological, cultural and tribal divisions for the betterment of humanity and the sake of the world.
Following his presentation, a George Fox student research poster session and dessert reception will take place in the Bauman lobby.
Lindroth will also speak in a class in Wood-Mar Auditorium at 3 p.m. on Monday, March 11, presenting a lecture entitled “What Can Chemistry Tell Us about Ecology? Insights into the Ecological and Evolutionary Success of an Iconic Forest Tree Species.†All are welcome to this event as well.

Nijay K.Gupta’s lecture, “People of Faith: Why the First Christians Called Themselves ‘Believers,'” will focus on why followers of Jesus adopted the label “believers†in reference to their identity, and even referred to their religion as “the faith.†What significance did this pose for them? Was it primarily about “beliefs,†or something more? Gupta will explore these important historical questions and also address the relevance this discussion has for Christian identity today.
Gupta is the recipient of the 2017-18 Faculty Achievement Award for Graduate Research and Scholarship and the Associate Professor of New Testament at Portland Seminary.Â
Come early, between 5 and 6 p.m., and check out the work of our Richter Student Scholars and Steinfeldt Peace Scholars at a symposium in the Hoover lobby. Students will present their research and peace projects in a conversational poster format. Refreshments will be served.

Would you like to be better prepared to deal with a natural disaster? Are you ready if and when the “Big One” strikes? Come hear Steven Eberlein, disaster preparedness expert, talk about emergency preparedness at 4 p.m. this Monday, March 4, in Bauman Auditorium.
Eberlein was living in Sri Lanka in 2004 when a 9.1 subduction zone earthquake off the coast of Indonesia triggered a massive tsunami that took 230,000 lives in more than a dozen countries circling the Indian Ocean. As an aid worker, he was active witnesses to one of the largest multi-national relief efforts in history, starting from its earliest hours. Steven now works full time to educate audiences on the power of earthquakes and what can be done to be prepared for them.

A group of Master of Social Work students are teaming up with CycleBar to host a cycling class to raise money for Compassion First, a Beaverton-based organization that helps victims of sex trafficking in Indonesia by funding rescues, offering safe aftercare, and empowering the women and children in their future endeavors.
Come party with us at the CycleBar Tanasbourne (2110 NE Allie Ave., Unit 608 in Hillsboro) on Saturday, March 9, at 1 p.m., as we cycle to upbeat music and support a good cause at the same time. The class costs $25, and all of the proceeds go to Compassion First. Towels and shoes will be provided, as well as post-ride snacks!

Come cheer on our women’s basketball team, ranked No. 8 in the nation, as we take on Greenville in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament! The Bruins tip off at 3 p.m. today (Friday) on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
We will host a viewing party in the Hadlock Student Center lobby for those who wish to cheer on the Bruins together. It begins at 2:45 p.m. and lasts until about 5 p.m. A popcorn bar is included.
If George Fox wins today, the Bruins will play again tomorrow at 5 p.m. against the winner of today’s Washington University/UW-Whitewater game. In that event, a viewing party will take place in the same Hadlock location from 4:45 to 7 p.m. A nacho bar will be included for that game.

Join the College of Business’ visiting scholar, David Rawson, tonight (Friday) from 5 to 9 p.m., when he will be signing copies of his new book, Prelude to Genocide, at Chapters Books and Coffee (701 E. 1st St.).
In Prelude to Genocide, Rawson draws on declassified documents and his own experiences as a United States ambassador to Mali and Rwanda to seek out what went wrong in the events leading up to the 1994 Rwandan genocide, in which 800,000 lives were lost. It poses the question, “What lessons might be learned from the failure of diplomacy in this historic tragedy?”

The Center for Peace and Justice presents Promised Land, an indigenous film, on Tuesday, March 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. in Hoover 104.
Chinook Tribal Chairman, Tony Johnson, and the producers, Vasant and Sarah Salcedo, will be there for a Q&A following the film. Admission is free and the public is welcome.
Promised Land is an award-winning social justice documentary that follows two tribes in the Pacific Northwest, the Duwamish and the Chinook, as they fight for the restoration of treaty rights they have long been denied. In following their story, the film examines a larger problem in the way that the government and society still look at tribal sovereignty.
Students and faculty are welcome to come early, from 3 to 4 p.m., to meet Chinook Tribal Chairman Tony Johnson in Hoover 211 or the film producers, Vasant and Sarah Salcedo, in Hoover 250.

Faculty advisors: Registration for summer online courses is now open! For nearly a decade, these courses have proven to be a good way to help your advisees make progress toward graduation. Please let them know the following.
Registration is now open. Class sections are limited to 20 students each, and they fill up fast. Excellent general education options in BIBL, CHEM, RELI, MATH, HUMA, MUSI, PHYS, ACCT, and more are available.
The courses run for eight weeks for full credit, and the fee is 50 percent off normal tuition. In some cases, a student’s financial aid package can be used to cover the cost; they should check with Financial Aid for details.
The courses are all taught by experienced, devoted faculty members with a track record of success in online teaching. If students have questions about the applicability of a particular class to their degree requirements, they should contact their CAP Coach for more information.
