Blazak’s scholarship on hate crime and hate groups has made him a regular commentator in media outlets from NPR and CNN to BBC and Al Jazeera. He works with the National Institute of Justice and the Southern Poverty Law Center on hate crime research issues. He is currently vice-chair of the steering committee charged with implementing Oregon’s new bias crime law.

The universal scholarship application deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 19! The AAO and the Center for Peace and Justice encourage students who are interested in peace studies or social justice to complete the Steinfeldt Peace Studies Scholarship application.
The Steinfeldt Peace Studies Scholarship goes to George Fox upperclass undergraduate students each year who demonstrate a commitment to peace studies with a clear peacemaking vocation. There are a maximum of four awards available, which range from $2,000 to $4,000.
Students can apply for the 2020-21 Steinfeldt Peace Studies Scholarship through the scholarship manager on their My.GeorgeFox.edu account. Under “Student Resources” click on “Newberg UG Scholarships.” The scholarship manager closes at 5 p.m. in Wednesday, Feb. 19.
Students are to submit a personal statement essay (150 to 600 words) that describes themselves and how George Fox is helping them fulfill their career plans, as well as a Steinfeldt Peace Studies Scholarship essay (300 to 1,200 words).
Applicants are also to include a research idea or project to promote peace and justice that could be completed during the scholarship year. Awardees will present results of their project to a campus forum at the end of year and are required to select and work with a mentor on the required project and to meet with mentors and participate in sponsored events.

On Friday, Feb. 7, at 6 p.m. the Intercultural Resource Center will host a screening of the award-winning film An American Ascent.Â
This film follows the first African-American expedition to tackle North America’s highest peak, Denali. Through the expedition, these mountaineers challenge themselves and confront outdated notions of what adventure looks like.

The George Fox theatre department opens its winter production The Shakers of Mount Lebanon Will Hold a Peace Conference This Month this week. Come join us for this Big Bridge Theatre Consortium play that tells the story of a Shaker community in crisis in the early 20th century.
The show runs in Wood-Mar Auditorium Jan. 30 through Feb. 1 and Feb. 6-8 at 7:30 p.m., and will also include 2 p.m. matinee performances on Sunday, Feb. 2, and Sunday, Feb. 9. Open captioning will be available for select shows.
Students get their own tickets free on both Thursdays, Jan. 30 and Feb. 6. Each student must purchase his or her own ticket using their George Fox email address, and they must bring their ID with them to the door.
Employees are provided with one complimentary ticket for any of the shows. Like students, employees need to order tickets using their George Fox email address and bring their ID to the door.

The university community is invited to a special presentation, “King’s Speech: Preaching Reconciliation in a World of Violence and Chasm,” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, in Hoover 105.
Presenting will be George Fox’s own Sunggu Yang, an assistant professor of Christian ministries. He is the author of two books, King’s Speech: Preaching Reconciliation in a World of Violence and Chasm (2019) and Evangelical Pilgrims from the East: Faith Fundamentals of Korean American Protestant Diasporas (2016), and two books that are in progress, Picasso and Preaching: An Aesthetic Homiletic for the 21st Century and Sacred Waters: Pastoral Essays for Aspiring Preachers.

All are invited to a free art exhibition featuring Portland artist Erika Rier in the Lindgren Gallery, open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. The show, titled “A Fork in the Road,†will be on display Monday, Feb. 3, through Friday, Feb. 28.
Rier will give an artist talk at the Chehalem Cultural Center at 6 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 10, followed by a reception in the gallery from 7 to 8 p.m.
Rier is a self-taught artist working mostly in inks and paints on paper in a style she calls “folk surrealism.†After many years of oil painting and designing clothes, she shifted her focus to works on paper. She creates pieces that draw viewers in with their bright colors and delicate line work, but as the viewer delves deeper into the piece they find themselves immersed in a complex narrative.
