Please follow COVID-19 snack guidelines when eating on campus

Sunday, November 1st, 2020

Homemade or store-bought food and beverage snacks may be shared with other employees or students on campus so long as these guidelines are followed:

  • Everyone should wash their hands before and after preparing, serving, and eating food. Use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
  • For items like a shared bag of chips or salad, use a clean utensil to get the item out or tip the bag to get the item.
  • Use single-use options or identify one person to serve sharable items like salad dressings and condiments, so that multiple people are not handling the items.
  • If there is not one person identified to serve food, discourage sharing items like a serving spoon; rather, each person should use their own clean utensil to dish out the food.
  • Follow all guidelines regarding space capacity limits and physical distancing, and be sure to wear face coverings (when not eating).
  • Remember Bon Appetit is the Newberg campus’s exclusive caterer and is happy to discuss your food and beverage needs for meetings and events.

If you have questions, email the COVID operations team at cot@georgefox.edu.

Fire survivor support group begins tonight

Saturday, October 31st, 2020

Have you experienced a loss due to a fire? The Social Work Club invites you to join us for a student peer support group over four Sundays in November.

We’ll be meeting in the student lounge of the Meridian Street House (206 N. Meridian St.) from 6 to 7 p.m. Sundays on Nov. 1, 8, 15 and 22. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

This will offer an open and safe space for us to learn from each other, begin to heal together, and share our experiences of living through a fire. The group will be led by senior Ashley Martin, who experienced the loss of her family’s home and community in the California Camp Fire in fall 2018.

As students living away from home while a fire destroyed our communities, we may need a space to process the different feelings and experiences related to losing our homes.

For more information, contact Ashley Martin (amartin18@georgefox.edu).

Wednesday, October 28th, 2020

Thank you so much to those of you who are using CampusClear.

Our team works on making sure the George Fox community regularly checks in using the app, as well as following up with anyone who reports specific symptoms or testing results.

Updated communication

  • Student-athletes and athletic staff using SWAY should use both apps
  • If you NEVER come to any George Fox campus, you do not need to complete the form.
    • However, if you come to any George Fox campus – even once every other week – you DO need to complete the form.

Starting Monday, Nov. 2, through the end of the fall semester, each week, a user who completes all five weekday check-ins on CampusClear will be entered in a raffle for one of several coffee gift certificates.

Please help us keep our campus community safe by continuing to check in on CampusClear.

Please refrain from parking in reserved spaces

Wednesday, October 28th, 2020

Staff are permitted to park in all campus parking lots, however, we do ask that you stay out of reserved parking spaces.

These areas are reserved for specific departments, and they rely on having those spaces available in order to do their jobs.

In addition, we have reserved visitor spots and 10-minute parking spots that are meant to serve our community. Please help us by staying out of any reserved spaces. Thank you for your help!

Silent auction of faculty art in order to fund new scholarship

Wednesday, October 28th, 2020

The Department of Art and Design is hosting an art exhibit and silent auction of faculty artwork from Monday, Oct. 26, to Friday, Nov. 13. Proceeds received will seed a new scholarship the department is creating for underrepresented art and design students of color and other marginalized student populations.

The silent auction will take place online from Wednesday, Nov. 4, to Friday, Nov. 13. More info on it can be found on George Fox’s social media as well as the Department of Art and Design’s Instagram closer to the auction date. Parents, students and alumni will also be emailed information at a later date.

The Department of Art and Design is committed to creating a community that emphasizes the diversity of God’s kingdom, cares for and nurtures the diverse perspectives reflected in our student body, and uses visual communication as a conduit for conversation, celebration, and the examination of contemporary social issues.

Our goal is that this scholarship will work to remove some barriers for art and design students who are in underrepresented populations of our community, in order that access to a rigorous, high-quality, nurturing, and professional Christian art and design education is available to more students.

Information regarding the artwork:

This exhibit contains a variety of mediums, some of which are: paintings, photography, printmaking, illustration, ceramics, and design. Artists in this exhibit include Gary Buhler, Jeff Cameron, Douglas Campbell, Burkhardt Kleiber, Adam Long, Tessa Sargent, Jillian Sokso, Mark Terry, Tim Timmerman, Seth Van Der Eems and Brandon Waybright.

Minthorne Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If you have any questions regarding the exhibit or the silent auction, please contact our gallery and exhibitions assistant, Sarah Cuevas (scuevas15@georgefox.edu).

Wellness Wednesdays: November Challenge

Tuesday, October 27th, 2020

It is hard to believe that October is almost over! Thank you for your continued interest in our Wellness Wednesday topics. Today we invite you to participate in a 30-Day November Challenge.

What is the 30-Day November Challenge?

This challenge promotes healthy lifestyle changes. Complete 30 minutes of planned physical activity and 30 minutes of other wellness activities three to four times a week.

Other activities may include stretching, yoga, prayer, unplugged quality time, decluttering and organizing your space, doing something you enjoy, making a healthy meal, improving your sleep hygiene, getting a foot massage, etc.

Doing something nice for your body promotes more positive self-talk, which makes you feel better holistically. A bonus is that self-care is accessible and not a major time commitment for our busy days.

How does it work?

Log in your hours and basic information about your activities on your calendar or this Google Form from Nov. 1 to Nov. 30 and submit it by Dec. 4 for a prize draw. Depending on participation, we plan to have several prizes. Let us know if you are interested here.

Any questions? Contact Aga Luptak (aluptak@georgefox.edu or 503-554-2181).

Please remember to stay hydrated, wear your mask, and keep your six feet of distance if you are in a public space.

Expanding on last week’s topic:

We would also like to expand on the topic of emotional eating that we raised last week. Emotional eating is a complex term and can be a real challenge for some of us. Not every solution or advice may work for everyone. Therefore, we would like to provide you with more resources today, especially if you feel that you might be struggling in that area.

If you need assistance with a possible eating disorder, please contact your healthcare provider. You are also welcome to find out more about the topic on this website, which has both support groups for individuals dealing with eating disorders, as well as a screening tool to start conversations with healthcare providers and a grocery buddies support system to help those who feel anxiety when grocery shopping.

Be well and let us know if there any specific topics you need more information about.

Donate to the holiday Pajama Drive

Tuesday, October 27th, 2020

Aren’t new PJs just wonderful during the holidays? We think so, and we’re working with United Way, during their annual Pajama Drive, to provide over 1,600 local children and families in crisis with a new pair of jammies. It seems like such a small thing, but sometimes the comfort of a small gift can make a big difference.

Now through Monday, Nov. 30, you can drop off your donation at the food bank in Roberts 109. Or, mail your donation to campus box 6148.

If you have any questions, please contact Jere Witherspoon (bruincommunitypantry@georgefox.edu).
