Spread out in the amphitheater to prevent COVID-19

Tuesday, September 15th, 2020

You all are doing a great job helping us remain COVID-free. Meeting outdoors is a great way to stay COVID free. You’re welcome to use the amphitheater for outdoor gatherings, but you must follow the six-foot rule and ensure everyone is wearing face coverings.

When using the amphitheater, please have everyone sit on the tape markings that have been placed six feet apart. And remember, the maximum number of people in the amphitheater is 100.

Tuesday, September 15th, 2020

Due to the smoke and unhealthy air quality, Yamhill Community Partnership (YCAP), the organization that supplies the Bruin Community Pantry with 75% of our food, has been closed for the past two weeks. It is uncertain when they will open again, but hopefully soon.

Join Ephesians Bible study in Hoover 105 at noon

Tuesday, September 15th, 2020

Join us today at noon for our ongoing weekly Bible study! Because of the poor air quality, we will be meeting inside (Hoover 105) rather than the amphitheater.

Once again, Joseph Clair and Dominic Done, pastor of Westside: A Jesus Church and professor of applied theology at George Fox, will be diving into Paul’s letter to the Ephesians: a stirring call to faith and faithfulness and the formation of a radically new kind of community in Christ.

This event is open to anyone, and chapel credit is available for students. COVID-19 protocols will be in place, so please wear your mask.

Alumni business directory is being created this fall

Tuesday, September 15th, 2020

This fall, the Office of Alumni Relations is creating an alumni-owned business directory to promote and support Bruin businesses in the area (West Coast).

The directory will be listed on the alumni website, included in all communications, and highlighted on social media. The purpose is to keep alumni-owned businesses in front of the broader alumni community so together we can support each other through this COVID-19 pandemic.

Please refer alumni-owned businesses by filling out this form, or share this link with business owners. Please share this opportunity with as many alumni as you can. Together we Stand Tall!

Thanks!

Contact Sara Reamy with any questions you may have (sreamy@georgefox.edu or ext. 2118).

Keep up the good work: Virtual meetings prevent COVID-19

Monday, September 14th, 2020

Avoid having to quarantine by staying virtual in your meetings or maintaining six feet between you and others at all times. Current CDC quarantine guidelines now include anyone within six feet of a COVID-positive person if they spend over 15 minutes together, regardless of whether or not you were wearing a face covering.

So, as much as possible, we recommend staying virtual with your student, faculty and staff meetings.

Write cot@georgefox.edu with any questions.

Note minor change to face-covering policy

Sunday, September 13th, 2020

You all are doing a great job and have helped us remain COVID-free for 21 days!

We do have a change in our face-covering policy: As of today (Monday), face shields may continue to be used so long as you maintain six feet of distance. If you are closer (or likely to be closer) than six feet, you must wear a face mask. This minor change will help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Questions? Write cot@georgefox.edu.

Hadlock reminders and updates

Sunday, September 13th, 2020

Here are a couple of friendly reminders regarding the Hadlock Student Center:

  • Rules for mask-wearing still apply in the HSC. Please help us keep Hadlock safe by wearing a face mask/covering over your nose and mouth the entire time you are in the facility.
  • If you have a class in Hadlock’s gym, please exit using the emergency doors located downstairs. This will help the flow of traffic so you do not cross paths with the following class.

Updates

  • Intramurals started this week! Courts will be closed from 6 to 10 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday night, but you are more than welcome to come watch as teams compete in pickleball and badminton.
  • This semester’s group fitness schedule is now up on IMLeagues! We will be offering yoga, Zumba and cycling. Sign up to reserve your spot; we are limiting it to nine people per class this year. We hope to see you there!

Thank you for helping us keep Hadlock a safe space on campus!

Maker Hub is available to all students

Sunday, September 13th, 2020

Are you interested in woodworking? 3D printing? Sewing? Electronics? Welding? T-shirt making? And more? Did you know that the Maker Hub is available to all George Fox students (not just engineers!)?

The Maker Hub is officially open to the whole campus community, and we are welcoming all students to get involved, learn new skills, and stretch their creative muscles. Prerequisites for using the space include passing a few FoxTALE quizzes and getting familiar with our Maker Hub Wiki.

We are looking for “student aces” in the Maker Hub this semester. An “ace” is simply a volunteer who learns/knows a piece of equipment really well and is able to help train other students on it. Ace positions come with the benefits of extended shop access and learning new skills.

Email Nick Sullivan at nsullivan@georgefox.edu if you have questions.

Safety and service reminders from Campus Public Safety

Sunday, September 13th, 2020

Campus Public Safety would like to remind the George Fox community of a few helpful safety tips. Because, while the Newberg campus is located in what is considered a generally safe location, we know that, unfortunately, crimes and emergencies can occur in any location and at any time of day.

We encourage everyone to program Campus Public Safety’s phone number into your cell phone right now so that it is available in case you need it. We are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week: 503-554-2090.

The following are some of the reasons why you may want to give us a call:

  • If you feel unsafe, please call our office so that we can escort you to your destination. Safety escorts are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
  • In case of an emergency, first, call 911, and then call CPS; we can coordinate with emergency first responders to help direct them to your location.
  • Roadside assistance: We are happy to assist in unlocking your car or giving you a jump start if your battery is dead.
  • Locked out of your room? Campus policy requires that you first try calling a RA from your living area if you are locked out of your room. If you are unable to reach an RA, then you are welcome to call CPS and we will make our best effort to respond as soon as we are available.
  • Reporting crimes and accidents: If you need to report a crime or accident, we can connect you to the proper George Fox department or off-campus agency to complete and file a report.

A victim of a crime is never at fault and should not be blamed for his or her actions. For those who would like to know what precautions they can take in order to reduce the risk of victimization, we offer the following tips:

  • Let someone know where you are going, your expected travel time, and how long you plan on being in that location.
  • If you are running or walking in the evening, wear bright or reflective clothing to make yourself more visible to drivers and to help someone spot you faster in case of an emergency.
  • Also, if you are running or walking in the evening, go with someone or a group of people you trust. (If you choose this option, be sure to wear the appropriate face coverings.) Stay in well-lit, highly visible areas. Stay in familiar areas and avoid shortcuts.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and walk with purpose. Distractions like using your cell phone while walking can make you particularly vulnerable.
  • In regards to electronics, be sure that your phone is charged before traveling. Wear only one earbud while you walk and keep your volume low.
  • Do not leave valuable items in your car in an open view. Park in well-lit areas where it will be safe for you to return to at night. Take note of where you park so that you can easily locate your car again.

Questions? Call Campus Public Safety at 503-554-2090 or email Elrike Shaw at eshaw@georgefox.edu. Campus Public Safety officers are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year!
