A faculty business meeting is scheduled from 10:40 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, in Hoover 105. Missy Terry (Academic Affairs) will send all faculty the agenda and accompanying proposal handouts via e-mail next week.

Come celebrate the wisdom of farming at the inaugural Community Garden Fest from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20. The community garden is located north of the Villa Academic Complex, where the hospital’s helipad used to be. The event, sponsored by the Philosophy Club and keepers of the community garden, will feature live music, a drum circle, and fresh food from the garden (grilled veggie pesto wraps, fresh tomatoes, watermelon, and more).

Also, hear a panel discussion about humans and the soil. Contact Corey Beals (Religious Studies), Rachael Perrell, or Tyler Hale for more information. Families are welcome.

Bruin Discount Cards will be distributed in campus mailboxes this week. Use the card at eligible locations for great discounts. Participating retailers include: Coffee Cottage, Pogy’s Subs, Steve’s Auto Service, The UPS Store, Abby’s, Snooty Fox, and Chehalem Glenn Golf Course.

A faculty forum, “Christ’s Work and Covenant Renewal: Relational Perspectives on Atonement,” is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 21, in Hoover 105.

Larry Shelton (Seminary) will make a presentation and lead a question and answer session. Refreshments will be provided. Event sponsored by the Faculty Development Committee.

When the George Fox Bruins open their 2007-08 women’s golf season this Sunday, Sept. 23, they will not only be playing golf – they will be raising money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.

The Bruins will tee off at 1 p.m. in the Pacific 5-Way Tournament at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks, Ore.  Technocom, Inc., a total communication technology provider based in Wilsonville, Ore., will pay $10 to the Komen Foundation for each par and/or birdie that is made by any George Fox player. The golfers also will be wearing pink hats in an effort to raise awareness for breast cancer research.

Anyone wishing to pledge money toward the Bruins’ “Swing for the Cure” should contact head coach MaryJo McCloskey at 503-709-7543.

Many of you saw the flames and smoke that rose thickly over the quad Wednesday at noon. What you saw was the result of a partnership between the Newberg Fire Department and the George Fox residence life department.

As part of our fire education strategy, the fire marshal, Chris Mayfield, had his crews build a mock residence hall room full of furniture and belongings and place it in the campus quad. After speaking briefly to the gathered 400-plus students, staff, and faculty, he lit a simple bag of microwave popcorn and tossed it into a trash can. Within minutes the room was engulfed with flames. The object of the exercise was to illustrate the speed at which a room can become filled with flames and smoke. While many lessons can be learned from this demonstration, the most significant point was that a resident could be dead from smoke inhalation and heat within a matter of minutes in such a room.

We purposely did not advertise this event; the shock value was more significant in drawing attention than preparing for it. Incidentally, the speed of an actual fire will not allow us to anticipate it, either. However, you may anticipate that this will happen next year.

Besides reinforcing that candles, halogens, smoking, etc. are not permitted or wise within our student housing, the pressing need for quick evacuation when alarms sound was driven home. Over the next weeks, the halls will practice drills and other evacuation procedures will be discussed in our disparate buildings. The Graduate Department of Counseling announces the opening of the Portland Center for Counseling and Family Therapy. This community counseling center serves as the practicum/internship clinic for students in the GDC.

The center is administrated by a GDC faculty member and staffed by a professional counselor and advanced graduate students who are supervised by faculty trained in individual, marital, and family therapy. The center is now accepting individuals, couples, and families.

Any referrals would be appreciated. If you would like a packet of information, including business cards or brochures, they can be delivered to you at the Salem, Portland, or Newberg campuses. They are to be offered to any individuals you think may be in need of mental health services, including those who suffer from anxiety, depression, grief or loss, significant stress, abuse, or other concerns.

As a community counseling center, it is important that these services be accessible to the broadest population possible. Therefore, the center offers a sliding per-session fee schedule ranging from $15 to $75.

If you would like to visit the new clinic, tours are available by appointment between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in September. Also feel free to call (ext. 6060) with any questions about services or referrals. The center will return calls on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when the clinic is open.

If you have a prayer need, please know there are colleagues who would like to pray for you. You can send your prayer request through a Prayer Request Form. The form is also accessible by going to the Staff Development Committee site and clicking “Prayer Request Form.”
