Mail Services again has received permission from Jan Coleman, Yamhill County Clerk, to be an unofficial drop site for any Oregon county ballots. Please deliver the ballot to University Mail Services and hand it to a clerk at the window. No postage is necessary for Oregon ballots dropped off at this site.

You are invited to attend the dedication ceremony and open house for George Fox University’s Villa Academic Complex on Monday, Oct. 29, in the VAC lobby. The ceremony is scheduled from 4:15 to 4:45 p.m. The building will be open for tours and refreshments from 5 to 6 p.m.

The Visual Arts Department will host an opening reception from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, for Eileen Cotter Howell’s “Points of Departure” art exhibition in the Minthorne Gallery. The reception will be followed by an artist’s talk session from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the adjacent Hoover 102.
George Fox University Theatre will present alumna Tricia Gates Brown’s Whatever Kindles, a play about the lives of individuals who volunteer for Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT). Details on the world-premiere production are as follows:

Caitlin Corning (History) will present “Beyond the Pop Quiz: Evaluating Student Learning” at a faculty teaching forum scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, in the Executive Dining Room on the Newberg campus.
Studies have shown that students learn best when continually assessed, not just tested with a midterm or final exam. This session will discuss different techniques and assignments to evaluate student comprehension and encourage learning.
Those who have not reserved a lunch through Student Life – email Jere Witherspoon by 4 pm on Monday, October 22 – should bring their own. Everyone is welcome to attend the session, whether bringing a lunch or reserving a lunch. All faculty — full time, part time, and adjunct — are invited to attend faculty teaching forums. It’s that time of year again: time to get your flu shot. The Health and Counseling Center will host a flu clinic from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, and from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Please make an appointment by calling the Health and Counseling Center at ext. 2340. Walk-ins also will be accepted and worked into the schedule. Employees are welcome to bring in their children, who must be grade-school age or older.
The shots are free for Pioneer insurance, $1.50 for George Fox student insurance, and $15 for Kaiser and other insurances. Cash and checks will be accepted.

The university’s board of trustees will meet on the Newberg campus on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19-20. Friday’s plenary session will be in the Cap and Gown Room in Heacock Commons. Saturday’s plenary session is scheduled in the Villa Academic Complex’s Room 117.

The Academic Resource Center will host an American Psychological Association workshop from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in EHS 102. The session will cover APA formatting for citations and references. Stephanie Meagher, a master’s student in the university’s counseling program, will be the presenter.

Support staff will spend Wednesday, Oct. 24, at an all-day conference at Tigard Community Friends Church. We will miss their contributions that day, but this annual event is endorsed by the President’s Executive Team with the expectation that all support staff attend. Your full support is needed as well. Some services may be reduced or not provided on that day, but operations should be back to normal on Oct. 25.
Requests to be excused from the conference should only be made due to extenuating circumstances and must be approved by the support staff member’s supervisor(s) and vice president or provost. These requests should not be directed to HR.

A community of faith, LVC is a national volunteer service organization that unites people to work for peace and justice. For one year, volunteers live together in intentional community, practice simple and sustainable living, and work in stipended, full-time positions at social justice organizations.

The Office of Multicultural Services and the Center for Teaching and Learning are hosting a brown-bag lunch discussion on diversity in the classroom from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in the Bruin Den Annex. The sessions will continue to meet every other week.
Multicultural Services staff will be available to answer questions relative to diversity in and out of the classroom. There is not a set agenda, but a relaxed atmosphere of discussion. Resources will be provided.
Vickie Kilber, mother of Patrick Kibler, a student killed by a drunk driver in 2004, will visit campus for the Student Life-sponsored “Your Dash – What Are You Doing With It?” alcohol-awareness week event at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in Hoover 105.
Those in attendance will receive gift certificates for a free meal at Wendy’s.
