Baruch Meir, an associate professor at Arizona State University, will visit George Fox for the second installment of the university’s newly created Bösendorfer Artist Concert Series at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, in Bauman Auditorium.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and alumni, and $6 for students and children under 12. Tickets may be purchased at the box office by calling ext. 3844 or by visiting music.georgefox.edu.

In addition to Sunday’s concert, Meir will be offering a public master class to three piano majors – Joseph Forster, Beth Sellers and Becca Couch – at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, on the Bauman stage. There is no admission fee to attend the master class.

Meir, named a Bösendorfer Concert Artist in 2003, will perform works by Ravel, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, and Galuppi on Sunday. He has performed in Austria, England, France, Israel, Portugal, and throughout the United States.

He has presented solo recitals at the Bösendorfer Saal in Vienna, Austria; Murphy Hall in Los Angeles; and at the Toujours Mozart Festival in Salzburg, Austria. He also has presented master classes at the Music Academy in Vienna, the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem, and universities in the U.S.

A native of Israel, Meir is a summa cum laude graduate of the Rubin Academy of Music of Tel Aviv University, where he earned both bachelor and master degrees in piano performance.

The university’s annual Health and Benefits Fair is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, in the Cap and Gown Room. This is the kickoff event for Benefits Open Enrollment; watch for more information about that soon.

The fair is a great opportunity to talk to your benefit reps as well as health and wellness professionals without cost or commitment. Get your hearing tested, test your antioxidants, and check your body fat (and then stop for food samples). Event also includes door prizes.

Quaere Verum will continue to sponsor a time of prayer for Kenya every Wednesday in the Foxhole, at least until the end of the Lent. Please join the group at 5 p.m. and pray for this country in such a time of conflict and turmoil.

In an effort to get to know the community better, President Robin and Ruth Baker are hosting a series of small-group desserts at their home. The first staff/administrator dessert, open to the first 15 people who e-mail Missy Terry (President’s Office), will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20 (note date change from original announcement).

If you have not already submitted a tuition remission request and you anticipate using any tuition remission benefit during the 2008-09 academic year, please complete a Tuition Remission Request Form and submit it by Monday, March 3.

It is important to read the one page of information before you begin completing a Tuition Remission Request Form. Incomplete forms will be returned without being processed.

For information about the Tuition Exchange program, please contact Missy Terry (President’s Office). Again, completed TR request forms must be turned in to Human Resources by March 3. If you miss the deadline, your tuition remission cannot be guaranteed for next year.

Professional publication is an increasingly important, but sometimes intimidating, responsibility of university faculty. David Sherwood (Social Work), editor of the journal Social Work & Christianity for 25 years, will lead a Faculty Teaching Forum workshop on writing for publication from noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in the Executive Dining Room.

Participants will review issues such as the types of articles that might be appropriate, selection of journals for submission, writing form and style, the peer review process, using editorial feedback, and appropriate ethics. Participants also will discuss their ideas and questions about writing and publication.

All faculty — full time, part time, and adjunct — are invited to attend Faculty Teaching Forums (FTFs). Video podcasts of FTFs will be available at the “Events and Resources” link on the Center for Teaching and Learning website.

The university’s men’s and women’s basketball teams will join forces this Saturday, Feb. 16, to participate in the “Think Pink” campaign for breast cancer awareness, as well as to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day, as a part of the Bruins’ basketball doubleheader that evening in the Wheeler Sports Center’s Miller Gym.

Pacific University will be the opponent for the women’s game at 6 p.m. and the men’s game at 8 p.m. The first 150 fans to arrive at the games will receive pink wristbands, and anyone wearing pink will get in free with a $2 donation to the Breast Cancer Fund. Also, all women under the age of 18 will be admitted free.

The “Think Pink” initiative is a global, unified effort by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities, and beyond. George Fox is one of more than 900 schools nationally that will be taking part in the campaign.

In conjunction with “Think Pink,” George Fox athletics will be celebrating the 22nd Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day by honoring all senior women student-athletes at halftime of the men’s basketball game. Awards will be presented to 24 outstanding women student-athletes.

This award celebration is one of more than 1,000 events taking place across the country for National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Congress has proclaimed this national day each year since 1987 as a time to recognize the progress of girls and women in sports, and to acknowledge the benefits that sports and fitness activities can bring to the lives of all girls and women.

In addition to the awards celebration, during halftime of the women’s game, there will be a competition for girls and women, as well as raffle prizes.

The university’s Symphonic and Jazz bands will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, in Bauman Auditorium. Doors open at 7 p.m. and there is no admission charge.

The Symphonic Band will perform “Klezmer Classic’s” by Johan DeMeij. The group also will perform “Symphonic Prelude” by Mark Camphouse, a piece composed in honor of the fallen soldiers buried at Colleville-Sur-Mer, a cemetery above Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. Other pieces will be “High School Cadets” by John Philip Sousa and “Suite Francaise” by Darius Milhaud.

The Jazz Band will perform “Tribute to the Duke” and “Tall Cotton” by Sammy Nestico, and “Jackson County Jubilee” by Benny Carter.

The Symphonic Band is directed by Pat Vandehey and the Jazz Band is directed by Joel Tanner.

Does God love justice? If we love God, we love must love justice, too. Please join us for the classic film Sergeant Rutledge, facilitated by Kerry Irish (History), from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, in EHS 102. You will be educated about Blacks in Amercian history and be reminded of God’s love for all of his children.

The Jan. 15, 2008 issue of Christian Century featured an article by Ed Higgins (Writing/Literature) and Tom Johnson (Religious Studies) on the trilogy of novels by British atheist Philip Pullman. Pullman’s first novel in the series was recently made into a movie, The Golden Compass.

On Tuesday, Feb. 12, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Hoover Lounge, Tom will provide an overview of the coauthored article and lead a discussion on Pullman’s work and the Christian community’s response to fiction that has religious/Christian overtones. The university community is invited to attend.

The Liberal Arts Critical Issues program (G.E. senior capstone) is pleased to announce that Dan Kimball, author of They Like Jesus, but Not the Church, will speak from 4:40 to 5:30 p.m. and from 7 to 7:50 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, in Hoover 105. The title of the presentation is “Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up?” All are welcome to attend.
