The George Fox Veterans Club has some upcoming events for members and students alike.

  • Today (Friday), the club is meeting in the Murdock Library’s Room 103 from 8 to 10 a.m.
  • On Wednesday, Sept 28, the club will host a community dinner open to everyone! Join us from 5:15 to 7 p.m. The dinner will be at the Dundee Community Center (1026 OR-99W).
  • Every Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m., join the Veterans Club and local veterans for black coffee. Have a chance to meet some of our patron members! We’ll meet at 2902 E. 2nd St. in Newberg.

Event managers take note: RegFox prices increasing on Oct. 1

The event management system used by the university, RegFox, is increasing their service fees starting on Oct. 1. RegFox pricing will go from $0.99 flat per paid registrant to $0.99 + 1% per paid registrant, with a maximum fee capped at $4.99 per registrant.

Moms of young children: Join together for lunch on Sept. 29

Tomorrow (Friday) marks another Friday @ Fox visit day. Prospective students will be participating in campus tours, visiting classes, eating lunch on campus, and touring academic departments of interest.

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions is asking students and employees to help make visitors feel the Be Known promise during their time with us tomorrow.

A few things to note:

  • There will be tours rotating through campus and residence areas at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2 p.m.
  • Plan to park in areas outside of the Stevens lot if possible to ensure enough spaces for visitors.
  • Consider offering a helping hand if visitors need directions or have questions about George Fox.

Come solve the Math Walk with your family

Come experience playful and engaging mathematics on a Math Walk!

Yesterday (Wednesday), prospective teachers from George Fox created a Math Walk on the sidewalks near the Newberg Public Library. This Math Walk consists of fun and engaging math problems for all ages on the sidewalk in chalk. Bring your friends and family to solve some mathematics problems. The problems will be up all weekend or as long as weather allows.

Flu vaccinations available on campus

Join Zoom seminar on suicide prevention Oct. 3-4

Join us on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 3-4, for the Interprofessional Primary Care Institute’s Strengthening Team™ Ethics & Legal Considerations Suicide Prevention two-day event.

Day 1: We will explore safety, security, risk and common ethical and legal concerns in healthcare practice, followed by applying these concepts to emerging roles in primary care (behavioral health clinicians and culturally responsive community health workers). We will share experiences of power differentials in high-quality primary care early adopters.

Day 2: Kent Corso, PsyD, will present “Proactive Reduction of Suicide in Populations via Evidence-Based Research.” After that, we will discuss suicide in healthcare workers, as well as a system-wide approach to suicide prevention in primary care sustained since 2011.

Take part in National Care for Kids Day activities today

National Care for Kids Day, held annually on Sept. 20, offers an opportunity to positively impact a child’s life in a variety of ways both large and small, because we all know there are many ways to be a role model in a child’s life.

The spiritual life office would like to invite you into serving in two particular opportunities today (Tuesday):

  • Donate needed items (below) to the resource rooms of our Title I schools in Newberg
  • Attend the Big Bruin and Foster Parents Night Out Training (5:30-7:30 p.m. in Canyon Commons Banquet Rooms)

For the donation drive, we will be collecting full-size hygiene items to give to elementary school resource rooms. Items needed include: shampoo, conditioner, deodorants, body wash, soap, loofahs, hair brushes, combs, toothpaste and toothbrushes.

Items can be either be brought to the 5:30 p.m. training in Canyon Commons, or dropped off at the SpiL (Barclay) House (just outside the north entrance to Canyon Commons).

All invited to Contemplative Worship on Wednesdays this semester

Every Wednesday this semester, Contemplative (Quaker) Worship will be held from 2:15 to 2:45 p.m. in Hoover 104.

In quiet waiting before the Lord, in addition to doing business with God as each of us needs, those present will be welcome to share a message from the Lord as they might feel led. We will then close with sharing and prayer. Spiritual life credit is available.

George Fox alumnus returns to discuss his breakthrough research

One of our graduates is on the brink of changing how doctors treat chronic cardiac disease. Joel Rurik, a 2016 graduate of George Fox’s biology program, will explain the details of his research in a lecture all are welcome to attend on Monday, Sept. 26, at 3 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Rurik is now a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, where he does cutting-edge gene therapy research. Most recently, his team’s work was featured on the front cover of Science, the top research journal in the United States.

Cardiac fibrosis, a scarring of the heart, underlies most cardiovascular diseases and remains challenging to target therapeutically. Chronic cardiac disease often results in fibrosis, which negatively affects heart health and function. Therapies targeting this cardiac fibrosis remain limited, but Rurik’s research offers a promising and tractable immunotherapy approach for tackling fibrosis.

Author Richard Foster presents inaugural Spiritual Formation Award on Oct. 3

Come see renowned Christian author, teacher and alumnus Richard J. Foster present an award in his name to pastor and fellow author Trevor Hudson on Monday, Oct. 3. The 7 p.m. presentation in Canyon Commons will be followed by Hudson’s keynote speech and a reception. Hudson will also speak at chapel the next morning, Oct. 4, at 10:50 a.m.

A selection committee selected Hudson as the first recipient of the Richard J. Foster Award in Spiritual Formation. The award recognizes those whose intellectual and practical work helps others come into an ongoing transformational relationship with Jesus Christ.

Hudson is the author of more than 20 books, the most recent of which, Seeking God: Finding Another Kind of Life with St Ignatius and Dallas Willard, was released in September.

Allow DPT students to help you reduce your risk of falling

RSVP for free lunch and to help clean up Hess Creek Canyon on Sept. 23

Have you had a taste of working outside and would like another opportunity to do so again? Plant Services will be setting up a Hess Creek Canyon cleanup day once a month. For those volunteering to help us remove invasive species plants and clearing brush, we will be providing a Bon Appetit lunch.

We will announce the cleanup day each month. This month’s work day is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 23. Check in at the Thomas Center (1101 Villa Road) at 8 a.m. Work will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will continue all day, ending at 4 p.m.

The Plant Services office will be closed on the designated cleanup day. If you are interested in joining us, your RSVP is required on this form. Those wishing to have a provided lunch will need to RSVP by the end of business day on Tuesday, Sept. 20. Thank you for your consideration!
