Tilikum is offering a unique opportunity for a women’s retreat May 15-17. We are planning an adventure-based retreat for women on our challenge course and would like to invite any George Fox employees to participate at a special rate of $110 per person for the weekend (more than 25 percent discount).

The price includes two nights lodging at Tilikum Retreat Center, six meals and all activities. The weekend begins Friday with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and will conclude Sunday after lunch. Mark Benjamin (Spiritual Life) and his family will be leaving our community at the end May. To honor them, we are throwing an open house/celebration/going away party from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at the Spiritual Life House. Mark is moving to Georgia for the summer and eventually to North Carolina to help with a church plant. Feel free to stop in whenever you can and let Mark know how much you appreciate him!

A Greenroom service will be held on “Dead Day” Monday, April 27, at 7 p.m. Come to the Amphitheater (if it’s not rainy*) and worship as a community one last time this school year. This is a great way to take a break from studying and prepare for a week of finals.

*If the weather is bad, it will be held in Bauman Auditorium.

Ushers are needed for the university’s Baccalaureate ceremony on Saturday, May 2. Ushers need to arrive at Bauman Auditorium at 8:45 a.m. The ceremony typically lasts until 11 a.m.

Ushers need to dress appropriately for the event: Men in dress slacks and collared shirt; women in dress pants, skirt and nice blouse, or dress.

The last lost-and-found tables for the academic year will be set up from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, in the Bruin Den. If you have lost-and-found items in your offices/departments, please bring them to the security office before Tuesday. All items not reunited with their owners by the end of the day Tuesday will be donated to charitable causes.

This is a reminder that the Department of Performing Arts will present its Spring Concert, the final performance of the academic year, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 24, in Bauman Auditorium. The concert will feature the Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Women’s Chorale and the Symphonic Band. Please come and support the dedicated work of our music students and faculty as they close the spring performance season.

Please join the engineering department for its annual Freshmen Robot Challenge from 1:45 to 3:15 p.m. Thursday, April 23, in the EHS Atrium. Come and see the robotic vehicles battle it out as they navigate through the obstacle course, or as the engineering students call it, “The Gauntlet.” Refreshments will be provided.

If you have been involved in any of the George Fox University theatre productions for the 2008-09 school year, come join us for an evening of celebration and thanksgiving for a successful and blessed season. We will host a celebration featuring food and beverages, entertainment and awards from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 27, in Wood-Mar Auditorium. Also, next year’s theatrical season will be announced.

At the end of every school year, many students leave behind good, usable items. These items often include blankets, clothing, kitchen supplies, small appliances, radios, room decorations, little tables, etc. In an effort to keep the dumpsters from overflowing and to be better stewards of resources, Phase II was initiated. Plant Services is happy to receive anything that students do not want to take home.

The items gathered are sorted and made available to student summer help and staff, but most of the items are given to different organizations in the local area, including Rescue Mission, Shelters and Love INC. Barrels will be placed in the lobbies of the dorms and central living areas, as well as on the porches of the Weesner, Beals, Hoskins, Munn, Villa Road Houses and Newlin Apartments.

Note: Please do not donate damaged or soiled items. Also, please do not place trash in the barrels labeled “Phase II.” There are drop boxes for your trash located strategically around campus.

Donated items will be stored at Wright House (515 Villa Road) and will be available to employees/summer students after the first week of May.

Learn to make those gorgeous hanging baskets that grace our George Fox quad area at a four-hour workshop at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 14. You will learn how these beauties are assembled and help Plant Services in the process. You are welcome to join in the class at any time.

Celebrate with our seniors at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, at the senior commissioning and campus celebration chapel in Bauman Auditorium. This is a time to celebrate our seniors and send them off with prayer and worship. The senior slideshow also will be shown as we remember our many great times together at George Fox. So come join the celebration!

A digital portfolio workshop is open to all faculty, staff and students on Friday, April 24, in Hoover 209. Learn how to use iWeb to create a digital portfolio that you can post to any domain you have access to. It also works with Mobile Me and Facebook.

Come celebrate Earth Day at the George Fox community garden Wednesday, April 22. Beginning at 6 p.m., we will be planting and preparing the garden beds for summer crops. Find out more about the community garden, located next to the Villa Academic Complex, and how to be involved. All are welcome.

I am traveling to Cambodia this August with Transitions Global to learn more about the sex trade and to help girls who have been rescued out of sex trafficking. I am trying to learn as much about the country as possible and a few phrases in their native language of Khmer. The School of Management is hosting guest speaker Lisa Brooks to share on the topic “Investigating the Power of Social Networking” from 7 to 9 a.m. Friday, April 24, in Room 155 of the Portland Center.

Today, corporate and public Internets are used more for social networking than e-mail. This interactive workshop explores the power of social networking, which goes far beyond interpersonal collaboration. Join us for a couple hours of social networking and learn how social networks are used to leverage resources of the world to speed processes, resolve complex issues, and build relationships.
