The university’s Center for Peace and Justice is hosting John Perkins, an admired American Civil Rights activist, Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 10-11. He will speak in chapel, as a guest at the 25th annual Woolman Peacemaking Forum, and twice on Thursday. The theme of the forum is “Are We Achieving Racial Justice Reconciliation?”
Perkins has been a durable voice for justice and reconciliation, especially through the lenses of community development. He is the founder of Voice of Calvary Ministries (Jackson, Miss.), Harambee Christian Family Center in Pasadena, the John M. Perkins Foundation, and the Christian Community Development Association.

Homecoming festivities are planned on the Newberg campus Friday and Saturday, Feb. 5-6. Among the planned events are affinity reunions for those who went on one of the university’s May Serve trips or enrolled in the school’s engineering major; reunions for the classes of 1950, 1970, 1980, 1985, 1990, and 2000; an alumni celebration brunch; the theatre’s presentation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s A Grand Night for Singing; and men’s and women’s basketball games both nights.

The Bruins will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day and the “Pink Zone†promotion for breast cancer awareness and research during the Friday basketball doubleheader. Twenty senior student-athletes and athletic training students will be honored at halftime of the men’s game that night. “Pink Zone†T-shirts will be on sale, and proceeds from the sales as well as a portion of the gate receipts will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Saturday is homecoming, with the Homecoming Court to be introduced at halftime of the men’s game.

The theatre’s winter production of A Grand Night For Singing will be showing in Wood-Mar Auditorium Feb. 4-6 and Feb. 11-13 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 7, at 2 p.m.
A Grand Night for Singing is a musical review of 36 of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s most memorable romantic ballads. The arc of Grand Night takes the audience on a musical journey through all the emotional stages of love.
All George Fox University employees and students receive one complementary ticket. Your complimentary ticket is only available at the Box Office in the University Bookstore. Additional tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for alumni and seniors, and $6 for students and children under 12. Tickets may be purchased on the university’s website.
Three student project displays are currently up in the library. Following is a synopsis of each.
History of Visual Communications
Members of Bob Bredemeier’s History of Visual Communications class were all given the same typographic information to design posters in a style or art movement studied in class. Each year the typographical information is on a fictitious concert highlighting one or more composers. This year’s concert pieces use French composers.
General Biology 211
Each group of two students prepared a poster describing some practical application of biology and the relevant theory behind this application. The purpose of this assignment was to offer students a first exposure to the presentation of science-related information using a poster format. Posters include pieces on photosynthesis, yersina pestis (Black Plague), effects of cyanide inhibition on the electron transport chain, intercalated discs, breast cancer and leptin.
Drawing II
Lori McLaughlin’s Drawing II class created drawings in the style of artist Robert Longo. Students used a large format and high contrast, with black and white charcoal, to create an image that displays a strong emotion or dramatic feeling. These images reflect the work of God in nature and human expression.

Greg Smith, chief information officer, will highlight several educational technologies currently used by faculty at a Faculty Teaching Forum scheduled from 12:40 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, in Cap and Gown A. New technology that is likely to be adopted at the university will also be discussed, along with emerging educational technology that universities will be exploring in the future.
