Bon Appetit unveils new containers to reflect environmental commitment

Starting Monday, Jan. 11, we will be making a few changes in both the Bruin Den and Villa Cafe, reflecting our continued desire to be more environmentally sensitive on campus.

Our first change will be to replace the clear plastic cups and lids typically used for smoothies and other iced drinks with ones produced with PLA, a corn-based biodegradable, thermoplastic, aliphatic polyester derived from renewable resources such as corn starch. PLA stands for “polylactic acid.”

Secondly, we will replace our clear plastic take-out containers with Bio-Plus EARTH take-out boxes. They are endorsed by the Green Restaurant Association because they are made from 100 percent recycled paperboard using a minimum of 35 percent or more post-consumer recycled paper content. We will start offering them for both hot foods and the salad bar option for those who want a take-out container.

Both of these products are fully compostible for those who actively participate in a composting program. If you have any questions regarding these items, please don’t hesitate to let us know.
