Some reminders about Halloween weekend and community guidelines
In an effort to promote a fun, safe and welcoming environment this Halloween and harvest party season – guided by our community standards and a shared dedication to belonging – the Office of Student Life and the Office of Inclusive Excellence offer some tips for costume choices and community expectations:
- Costume Guidelines & Avoiding Cultural Appropriation: Respect cultural traditions by avoiding clothing, symbols or items that belong to a cultural tradition other than your own.
- Avoid Stereotypes & Harmful Tropes: Do not wear costumes involving blackface or caricatured representations of racial and ethnic groups (e.g., Native/Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Hispanic, Latinx, etc.).
- Reflect Before You Wear: Ask yourself, “Why do I want to wear this costume? Could it be misunderstood or hurtful if I don’t understand its origin or context?”
- Learn More: Not sure what cultural appropriation is? Stop by the Intercultural Resource Center (IRC) to chat with a team member of the IRC or the Office of Inclusive Excellence.
- Upholding Lifestyle Standards & Values: To foster a healthy and supportive environment, we want to remind students to honor our lifestyle commitments by abstaining from the possession and use of alcohol and drugs both on and off campus.
- Mutual Accountability: Look out for one another in love, exercise sound judgment, and help keep our community vibrant, safe and welcoming for everyone.
