Through this class you should be able to better self-identify problem areas in your study habits and make steps toward improving your academics.

Purchasing a new cell phone? Some things to be aware of before you buy

Sunday, December 19th, 2021

With the Christmas season upon us, many will take advantage of the phone deals being offered. If you get a new phone, here is what you need to know so you don’t lose access to your George Fox email, Canvas, Zoom or other apps that use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

If you only use Okta Verify (soon to be required for VPN) or Google Authenticator, the app will transfer to your new phone but not the settings.

Before purchasing a new phone, make sure that you have one of the following methods also set up:

  • SMS Authentication (text message)
  • Voice Call Authentication

You can have multiple methods active at the same time. To learn more, read this Multi-Factor Authentication: Set up a Second Authentication Method document.

You will not be able to use Okta Verify or Google Authenticator until you go through the setup process again. Here are the directions to set up Okta Verify and/or Google Authenticator when you have a second method set up.

If you got a new phone and activated it without SMS or Voice Call setup, you must contact the Service Desk.

Questions regarding MFA? Contact the Service Desk at servicedesk@georgefox.edu or 503-554-2569.

Maker Hub’s Tool Tip Friday: High-Speed Camera

Thursday, December 16th, 2021

Did you know that the Maker Hub has a high-speed camera? Our Chronos high-speed camera is located in “The Vault” and is perfect for recording a video with very high frame rates. It allows you to capture events that are too fast to be seen with the naked eye, allowing these events to be seen in slow motion and studied in detail.

Videos can be saved in RAW, CinemaDNG, or H.264 codecs. For more information, check out the Maker Hub’s Wiki page, and check out this video for examples!

The Maker Hub exists as a resource and creative outlet for the entire George Fox community (yes, including non-engineers!). We are looking for student aces. A student ace is simply an expert on a piece of equipment who helps train other students on the usage of that equipment and gains extra privileges within the Maker Hub.

Please email makerhub@georgefox.edu if you would like to get connected or have any questions.

Academic mentor positions available for graduate students

Wednesday, December 15th, 2021

Learning Support Services is recruiting two or three graduate students to work as academic mentors on the Newberg campus during the spring 2022 semester.

Academic mentors generally have six to eight one-on-one meetings with students each week; the position pays current Oregon minimum wage. Students can find more details and application information on the HandShake position posting. The position is open to any George Fox graduate student. Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled.

Past academic mentors have commented on how much they grew through the experience, especially through their one-on-one sessions with high-risk students. The role is not a formal counseling role, but has similarities that can be especially helpful for graduate students who will be entering helping professions.

Please contact Rick Muthiah (rmuthiah@georgefox.edu) if you have questions.

Familiarize yourself with face-covering policy on all campuses

Tuesday, December 14th, 2021

Faculty, staff, students, vendors and visitors across all campus locations must use face coverings as required by state guidelines. You can read the full face-covering policy here.

Masks, face coverings, or face shields are currently required for:

  • All indoor public campus spaces (e.g., classrooms, offices, hallways, meeting rooms, etc.) unless the individual is alone in an individual private workspace defined by OHA as an indoor space within a public or private workplace used for work by one individual at a time. It must be enclosed on all sides with walls from floor to ceiling and with a closed door. Note: Face coverings are required in all cubicle and open workspaces.
  • In the Bruin Den, Canyon Commons or Bridge Cafe you may remove your face covering ONLY if you are actively eating.

The university has worked hard to follow CDC and OHA guidance through the pandemic, but we recognize there will be a variety of personal perspectives on how our campus should transition back to pre-pandemic life. We ask that, as members of a Christ-centered community, we treat one another with kindness and grace, particularly when our views differ from one another.

Be well and stay safe!
