Join the fun of CREO paint night on Nov. 30

We’re excited to host our next CREO paint night! “Creo” translates to “create’ in Latin. We will have a special Christmas-themed event, and we will be painting wood slices!

Join us at 6 p.m. this Tuesday, Nov. 30, in Canyon Commons 102 & 103 for a fun, relaxing and creative experience. All skill levels are welcome, and all supplies will be provided. Just be sure to wear something that you don’t mind getting a little paint on!

Spiritual life credit will be available for this event. We hope to see you there!

All moms of young children invited to luncheon on Dec. 10

Each semester, employees who are mothers of young/school-age children (and expectant mothers) gather together for connection and networking.

This semester, we will be meeting at noon on Friday, Dec. 10, in the Canyon Commons dining room. Lunch will be provided free of charge. Come and join us!

Make plans to attend ‘Gatsby Gala’ winter formal on Dec. 4

Next weekend is the Gatsby Gala! The winter formal will be from 8 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville!

There will be hors d’oeuvres, a photo booth, and plenty of dancing! Tickets will be on sale in Canyon Commons Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 7 p.m., and will also be available in the student life office in Hadlock during office hours Nov. 29 through Dec. 3.

Donate to gift card drive for local families

Get into the holiday spirit and donate a food-related gift card to help local families in need! Every year, the spiritual life office partners with local schools to provide local families with gift cards to food/local restaurants, grocery stores, food delivery, Visa gift cards, etc.

Gift cards can be dropped off at the spiritual life office (Barclay House).

Join autism awareness group’s run on Sunday

The autism awareness group is organizing an event at the football stadium for the Sunday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 28). The event will include a run around the track, listening to speakers, passing out fidgets, and more to raise money for Autism Awareness. We will meet from 1 to 4 p.m.

Check out Professor McCall’s Young Adult Fiction Writing course

Calling all readers and writers of Young Adult Fiction! Young Adult (YA) fiction is one of the hottest writing genres going, and George Fox is blessed to have an award-winning YA author in its English department: Guadalupe Garcia McCall.

This spring, Professor McCall is offering a special course in writing Young Adult Fiction. The class will be an introduction to the genre; you will read several examples of YA fiction and will have the opportunity to develop your own YA novel.

The class (WRIT 465A) meets at 9:25 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursdays.

Spring course investigates the history of immigration

The Department of History and Politics has added a new course for spring semester – HIST 485: Immigration Nation. The U.S. has had more immigrants than any other nation in the history of the world, and this class explores the motivations, contributions, and experiences of immigrants from the colonial period to the present.

The course is open to all interested students and carries no prerequisites. It will meet from 11 to 11:50 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays this spring.

Join excitement of midyear commencement as a volunteer

We are in need of several volunteers to serve as ushers at midyear commencement on Saturday, Dec. 18. We will be in Bauman Auditorium this year, and we’ll have two separate ceremonies.

Undergraduate commencement will begin at 11 a.m., and the graduate commencement starts at 3 p.m. Come help us greet our guests, hand out programs, direct graduates’ family and friends to their seats, and make graduation a special event for everyone!

All George Fox employees who participate as ushers will have the option to receive $50 through payroll, or take three hours off in lieu of this gift. Non-university volunteers will receive a gift card in the same amount.

War in Afghanistan, poverty to be discussed by guest speakers next week

The university community is invited to a pair of free presentations on campus next week …

Eric Patterson, a leading student of the just war tradition who has worked in academia, the White House, and the U.S. Department of State, will speak on the topic “Was America’s War in Afghanistan a Just War?” at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 29, in Hoover 105. Patterson serves in the U.S. Navy Reserve and is currently executive vice president of the Religious Freedom Institute.

The following evening, on Tuesday, Nov. 30, guest Jennifer Marshall will present a lecture entitled “Freedom to Flourish: Reforming Antipoverty Policy” at 7 p.m. in Hoover 105. Marshall has served as vice president of the Heritage Foundation and is currently a senior visiting fellow in its Institute of Family, Community and Opportunity.  She is widely published and has testified before Congress on several occasions.

Interested in working in D.C.? Join meeting Monday in Lemmons 15

Are you interested in working or interning in Washington, D.C.? Come hear and ask questions of Jennifer Marshall, a longtime policy analyst for the Heritage Foundation, and Eric Patterson, executive vice president of the Religious Freedom Institute, describe what it is like to intern or work in Washington, D.C.

Both speakers have extensive experience working for a wide range of governmental and non-governmental agencies and will answer questions about how to get an internship or job with your ideal organization. We will meet at 4 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 29, in Lemmons 15.
