Academic Resource Center: Help your students get off to a strong start

Tuesday, August 17th, 2021

The Academic Resource Center (ARC) is here to help students with writing, study skills, test-taking strategies, time management, and more. Here’s what you can do to help your students get off to a strong start:

  • Include the Academic Resource Center Syllabus Information Fall 2021 provided on the Faculty Online Resources site
  • Talk about the ARC during your classes before major papers are due
  • Recommend academic coaching as a way to get support with accountability, time management, study skills, and more
  • Consider requiring a visit to the ARC for one of your papers. If you are requiring a visit, please email Hannah Jackson (hjackson@georgefox.edu) to make sure the ARC schedule and consultants are prepared to meet your students’ needs.

If you have any questions, contact Hannah Jackson (hjackson@georgefox.edu).

Be sure to fill out a work order for furniture requests

Tuesday, August 17th, 2021

If you as a faculty or staff member require a desk, bookcase, filing cabinet or table, a work order will need to be entered for the delivery of these items.

Contact your building monitor so that they can enter the work order on your behalf. The custodial services team will deliver an item that matches the existing building furniture style.

If no items exist in the surplus furniture inventory, your request will be denied and purchasing will work with you on acquiring the pieces of furniture that are needed.

Contact Sonia Rademacher (srademacher@georgefox.edu) with any questions.

Get familiar with new Canvas Learning Management System

Monday, August 16th, 2021

You might already be aware that George Fox has moved from the FoxTALE course management system to Canvas. For those of you who are new to Canvas or just want a refresher, here are some resources to help you get familiar with the system:

  • 3-5 minute videos giving an overview of Canvas and specific components of the platform.
  • The Passport to Canvas site within Canvas provides a deeper dive into the system and is a great way to become “expert” in using Canvas. Each module will probably take 10-20 minutes, but it will be well worth the time.
  • Detailed step-by-step guides for functions within Canvas.

Consider having your Canvas page (canvas.georgefox.edu) open in one window and follow the steps in the tutorials to get a good handle on how to navigate Canvas. You may want to consider adding this link in your Chrome bookmarks or Firefox browser.

To access Canvas’s extensive support options, click the Help link at the bottom of the left sidebar of your Canvas site. Options include Live Chat with Canvas Support. You can also contact digitallearning@georgefox.edu or call the IT Service Desk at 503-554-2569.

Sunday, August 15th, 2021

The Hadlock Student Center will be closed Aug. 19, 20 and 26 for staff training and staff recreation, in order to get ready for a very busy year. We recommend alternative forms of exercise or trying new activities during this time as a way to “spice up” your routine!

The rental center will also be closed, but equipment can be rented and checked out on the days prior, and patrons will not be charged for the additional days as a result of our closures. To make reservations, please go here.

If you have questions, please email AJ Heil at aheil@georgefox.edu.

PA program in search of actors for Thursday event

Sunday, August 15th, 2021

The physician assistant program is in need of eight volunteers to help our first-year PA students on Thursday, Aug. 19. We are running a session of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) from 8 a.m. to about 1 p.m. and will have three different clinical scenarios requiring actors to complete.

The scenarios will include our PA students asking you questions or performing a physical exam on you (and sometimes both). We will provide food and beverages to keep you happy and comfortable. We truly appreciate any help you can provide for this learning opportunity for our students!

If interested, please contact Tim Aylward (taylward@georgefox.edu).

Reminder: Monday’s all-community meeting will be in Bauman Auditorium

Friday, August 13th, 2021

With the increase of cases as a result of the recent COVID-19 variant, Monday’s all-community meeting was initially moved from Canyon Commons to Stoffer Stadium. Unfortunately, as the track has yet to be completed, we are now moving the gathering to Bauman Auditorium. Masks will be required, and you are encouraged to attend in person.

Some employees have expressed concerns about attending, so we are offering a live stream, not for convenience, but as an option for those who have health-related concerns. If you are vaccinated you can enter the space with confidence, as Bauman is large enough for people to spread out, and to emphasize the point, masks will be required.

If you plan to attend in person, join us for donuts at 8:30 a.m. (in front of Bauman) in advance of our 8:50 a.m. start. We will dismiss at about 11:30 a.m., at which time you are welcome to a complimentary lunch with your colleagues in Canyon Commons.

Monday’s all-community meeting moved to Bauman Auditorium

Thursday, August 12th, 2021

Due to the high heat and concerns over the fumes generated by the newly installed track, this Monday’s all-community meeting will gather in Bauman Auditorium.

Plan to arrive at 8:30 a.m. to grab some breakfast outside the auditorium. The program will run from 8:50 to 11:30 a.m., and lunch will be served in Canyon Commons following an 11:30 a.m. dismissal. Since the meeting is indoors, masks will be required. We encourage you to wear George Fox apparel!

We look forward to joining together with you to reflect on the challenges we’ve come through, and most importantly, center on our common purpose before the new academic year: to serve our students well and prepare them spiritually, academically, and professionally to think with clarity, act with integrity, and serve with passion.

This is an in-person event. VP approval is required for any employees who can’t attend.

See you there!
