Joined NSLS? Make note of speaker broadcast dates

If you joined the National Society of Leadership and Success, here are some important dates for this semester.

The next speaker broadcast is Monday, Dec. 2, from 6 to 7 p.m. in Stevens 207.  If you aren’t able to attend that one, we have a make-up speaker broadcast on Thursday, Dec. 5, from 6 to 7 p.m. in Stevens 207. 

Both speaker broadcasts will be the same. You only need to attend one.

Check out Canyon Commons’ Thanksgiving hours

Canyon Commons’ hours of operation have changed for Thanksgiving weekend. They are as follows:

  • Thursday, Dec. 28 – Brunch 10:30-11 a.m.; Dinner 4-4:30 p.m.
  • Friday and Saturday, Nov. 29 and 30 – Brunch 10:30-11 a.m.; Dinner 5-5:45 p.m.
  • Sunday, Dec. 1 – Brunch 10:30-11 a.m.; Dinner 5-7 p.m.

Employees and their families invited to Bakers’ Christmas Open House Dec. 8

All employees and their families are invited to join Robin and Ruth Baker for the Bakers’ annual Christmas Open House from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Baird Home (701 E. Franklin St.).

Join us as we celebrate the birth of Christ, our Light, who calls us to “Rise and Shine” in a world of much darkness. We will be serving chili, light appetizers and holiday sweets.

Consider taking your bike home for the break

Do you have a bike on campus? If you are not using your bike, please consider taking it home this week and bringing it back over spring break when the weather improves.

If that is not a possibility, then please remove your bike from the outside bike racks and keep it in your dorm or apartment during the break so that it isn’t a temptation to thieves. Always keep your bike locked up, preferably with a U-lock.

Looking for a job? Positions are available

Do you have a Federal Work Study award and are looking for a job? Take a look on Handshake for a couple of positions that allow you to use your Federal Work Study award while working off campus with our community partners!

There is a position with Youth Outreach at its drop-in center in Newberg and a few positions open with the Newberg School District to help teach elementary school students how to read. This is a great opportunity to help build your connections in the community while also getting paid.

Due to Thanksgiving break, the ARC will be closing at 5 p.m. today (Wednesday). On Monday, Dec. 2, we will reopen with our normal hours:

  • Monday through Thursday, 1 through 10 p.m.
  • Fridays, noon to 4 p.m.

The university’s baseball and softball programs are looking for people who are aspiring to work/interested in analytics to join our program as managers this spring.

This is a non-paid position but is a great opportunity to get experience with the technology used in Major League Baseball and graduate with years of college baseball or softball analytics experience. Duties include, but are not limited to, collecting all forms of data and analytics in relation to our programs, and assisting coaches and players with practice and game film. It is limited to five spots.

Come to info session on ELI internships Tuesday

Want an internship at a top Portland company this summer? Then come to an info session to get all the details and learn how you can put together a winning application. The info session will be on Tuesday, Dec. 3, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in EHS 125.

The Emerging Leaders Internship (ELI) program connects talented students of color with paid internships at companies and organizations throughout the Portland area. You will do real work and develop practical skills that will launch your career. Last summer, 120 interns were placed at 76 partner companies, including 10 George Fox students.

Current students of color, and even ones graduating in December or May, are encouraged to apply. Opportunities exist for almost all majors. The application is open until Friday, Jan. 31

University closes Nov. 28-29 for Thanksgiving holiday

All university offices on the Newberg campus and at the Portland Center will be closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 28-29, for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Libraries on the Newberg and Portland campuses will be closed those two days, as well as on Saturday, Nov. 30. The 24/7 space in the Murdock Library will be open during the closure (5 p.m. Wednesday through 6 p.m. Sunday), and the Murdock Library will reopen fully on Sunday from 6 to 10 p.m. The Portland Center Library will remain closed on Sunday, Dec. 1.

In addition, the Bruin Store will be closed Thursday through Sunday.

Plan to attend Christmas tree lighting on Dec. 3

Please join us for the annual Christmas tree lighting on Tuesday, Dec. 3, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. There will be carols, cookies and hot cocoa in the Stevens Center atrium. The lighting of the tree will take place in Pennington Plaza.

Bruin cafes will close early tomorrow

The Bruin Den, Bruin Bites and Bridge Cafe will all be closing at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday), and will be closed Thursday and Friday as well.

Plan to attend Holiday Hangout, Winter Formal and Late Night Breakfast

Don’t miss the final Student Activities events of the semester! Take a study break and stop by the Holiday Hangout on Friday, Dec. 6, at 8 p.m. in the Stevens atrium for delicious sweet treats, a tater tot bar, an Elf showing, pictures with Santa and Pennington, games, and Christmas karaoke.

Also, plan to attend Winter Formal on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 8 p.m. at Leftbank Annex in Portland. The dance won’t be a swing dance this year. Come ready to dance your stress away for a few hours and enjoy some of the best hors d’oeuvres you’ve had in a while.

Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10 per person or in the Bruin Store. Transportation is available.

Finally, Late Night Breakfast is set for Monday, Dec. 9, at 10 p.m. in Canyon Commons. Everyone’s favorite dead day study break features food and plenty of loud music and antics. Don’t miss the fun! Commuters: We’ve got you covered on this one, so plan to attend.

Payroll deadline information for December

Please note the accelerated payroll deadline in December. Due to Christmas break, we will have fewer days to process the December payroll. Please have all payroll items (check requests, contracts, temporary employee timesheets, etc.) turned in to HR by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10.

Regular employee timesheets and student timesheets can be locked at the end of the month as usual. The student payday will be on Friday, Dec. 13, and the regular employee payday will be on Friday, Dec. 20.
