Apply for custodial porter position

The student porter position is a new job at Plant Services that will include working closely with the superintendent of custodial and other full-time porters to do various cleaning and porter services for the university.

The duties of this position will include maintaining assigned areas, fleet vehicle cleaning, removing debris, maintaining common room areas, restocking bathrooms, furniture moving, and organizing. It has flexible hours with some weekend work.

Learn about studying abroad in Japan

Are you interested in studying abroad at Tokyo Christian University in Tokyo, Japan? Our program offers students the chance to study Japanese as well as several other courses.

A representative will be on campus on Tuesday, Oct. 29, to answer questions about the program and provide more details to students. Come by the Lemmons conference room between 3 and 4 p.m. to talk about the program!

Winner of clean plate pledge drawing announced

During Weigh the Waste Week at Canyon Commons, diners were encouraged to sign the clean plate pledge, indicating that they would not take more food from the servery than they could eat and waste food by throwing it away.

One person who signed the clean plate pledge was randomly selected to win a $50 gift certificate to Grocery Outlet. The winner is Carmen Hixson!

Join President Baker for Sunday class on Pennington’s presidency

President Robin Baker will be presenting on “The Presidency of Levi Pennington” in the Christian forum class at Reedwood Friends Church (2901 S.E. Steele St., Portland) this Sunday, Oct. 27, at 11:30 a.m.

Baker will be sharing the fruit of his sabbatical research. All are welcome to attend! Worship begins at 10 a.m.

Gather for Fall Justice Conference Nov. 4

In celebration of National Native American Heritage Month, the Center for Peace and Justice and the Department of History, Sociology and Politics welcome Jace Weaver to campus for the 2019 Fall Justice Conference. His lecture is set for Monday, Nov. 4, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Hoover 105. The event is free and open to the community.

Weaver is director of the Institute of Native American Studies, the Franklin professor of Native American studies and religion, and adjunct professor of law at the University of Georgia. Join us to hear him speak about the “Bonds of Alliance: The Surprising Story of American Indians and Socialists United to Combat the KKK.”

HSC’s climbing wall set for closures this weekend

In preparation for Rocktoberfest, the Hadlock Student Center’s climbing wall will be closed for route setting tomorrow (Friday) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the next day (Saturday) from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In addition, there will be no roped climbing hours on Sunday, Oct. 27. Regular hours will resume Monday, Oct. 28, through Thursday, Oct. 31. The wall will close again at 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, for the duration of the event. 

Rocktoberfest is the fall bouldering competition that will run from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1. This event will bring the George Fox climbing community together for a night of fun and friendly competition. Participants will be eligible for prizes that will be raffled off throughout the evening. Attend lecture on Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy

All are invited to a special presentation, “Reflections on Dr. King and the Beloved Community,” on Thursday, Oct. 31, at 4:15 p.m. in Canyon Commons. This lecture on the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. will be given by Scott Finnie, a professor at Eastern Washington University.

Finnie has been a faculty member in EWU’s Africana Education Program and history department since 1992 and currently serves as director of Africana studies and as director of race and cultural studies.

To celebrate the new season and the fast-approaching Halloween holiday, Student Accounts has a spooky special for you.

From now until the end of October, the first 31 students to pay off their remaining fall balance in full will be entered into a drawing to win a $31 gift card to Coffee Cottage. It doesn’t matter how big or small the balance is! If your balance is already paid, come by for a caramel apple pop.

In order to have your name entered into the drawing, you must either come to the Student Accounts office or call us at 503-554-3301 to confirm that your account has been paid in full. There is no minimum balance requirement! It can be $1.50 for a library fine, $25 for a parking fine, $100 for that parking permit, or the rest of your tuition balance.

To check your balance and make a payment:

  • Log in to my.georgefox.edu
  • Click the “Financial Account” tile
  • Click “Account Balance”
  • Click “Make a Payment”

Remember, if you choose the electronic check method you will avoid the service fee. This is a first-come, first-served event, so do it now before you forget.
