Bruin Community Pantry now available as a resource

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2018

The Office of Student Life is excited to announce the start of Bruin Community Pantry, an initiative seeking to address the real problem of hunger (“food insecurity”) on campus. It’s our goal to help meet the needs of community members who, for one reason or another, do not have access to enough healthy food.

Four different components of Bruin Community Pantry include:

Food Pantry
All George Fox community members have access to the pantry, located in the Roberts Center (Room 110). Community food drives will be held to provide non-perishable items for the pantry, and athletic teams will facilitate food drives during home games.

Contact student life for a list of items non-perishable food and household items needed for the pantry. Donations are now being accepted in the student life office on the third floor of the Stevens Center.

Hospitality
Partnerships with local businesses for “gifts in kind” have been established with Bon Appetit, Newberg’s Grocery Outlet and Ray’s Produce. A variety of pre-packaged foods are available for students, located at hospitality tables in the student life office, spiritual life office, and the Intercultural Resource Center (Moore House). The tables are open during office hours, which are generally 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Duke Athletic Center will host a peanut butter and jelly sandwich bar that is available to all George Fox students.

Leftovers
The student life office will arrange for quality leftover food to be stored in a refrigerator in our office. All food donated will be adequately contained and dated. Food not picked up in the appropriate amount of time will be disposed of.

Students participating in this program can sign up by contacting our office. A waiver is required for anyone participating in the Leftovers program.

Outreach
Partnering with existing local outreach initiatives facilitated by spiritual life, students who want to support their efforts will be connected to their programs.

We live in a society with easy access to processed food. When you eat whole foods, you’re getting food in its natural state. This aspect of our outreach will endeavor to provide cooking classes in various living areas on campus using recipes from “Eat well on $4 a day, Good and Cheap.”

For more information, visit this link or contact Jere Witherspoon in the student life office (jwitherspoon@georgefox.edu or 503-554-2312).

Information on Fall Semester Student Refunds

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2018

The intent of this list is to bring peace or action! The Office of Student Accounts, unfortunately, will not be able to respond to emails asking for refund specifics without delaying all refunds. Watch your George Fox email for updates!

Assuming you have a credit balance, here are four common refunds delays:

  1. You have not signed up for MyGFU direct deposit or your bank info is incorrect
  2. You have a financial aid credit but also an unpaid balance due (pay your account through MyGFU today; see No. 3 below and complete a T4 Permission Form)
  3. There is a personal payment on your account. We do not refund personal payments unless you request it. In addition, recent payments need up to two weeks to clear your bank. To refund only the financial aid portion takes special handling. (You can help by emailing jgetsing@georgefox.edu if you are expecting a refund and a personal payment is involved.)
  4. Due to recent or pending activity, your credit balance appears to be in flux. (Get fully registered and squared away now, and if you are reducing a loan, please email jgetsing@georgefox.edu with the specifics).

Questions? Contact Jennifer Getsinger at the above email address.

Please stay away from unfinished areas around Hadlock Student Center

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2018

As the finishing touches are being made on the new Hadlock Student Center, we ask that members of the university community stay away from construction areas of the building. It is very important that you do not walk around unfinished areas, as this poses a safety hazard.

Thank you

Take precautions in light of area’s poor air quality

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2018

Welcome to a new school year! As new and returning students move onto campus this weekend, we wanted to remind you of the fact we are experiencing an impact from the many wildfires throughout the Northwest. Although the air quality is of concern, the threat of fire on or near campus is not an issue.

It is important to know that when the air quality is compromised, even healthy people may experience irritation. Typical symptoms are coughing, scratchy throat, shortness of breath and stinging eyes.

For individuals who are sensitive to poor air quality, the high smoke levels can have a much stronger impact. We strongly recommend that those individuals take appropriate precautions. Please limit your time outdoors, keeping medications such as inhalers and eye drops nearby, and follow guidance from your doctor regarding your personal respiratory management plan.

Please follow these tips to minimize the impact of this poor air quality:

  • Pay attention to the air quality reports. Updated color-coded reports can be found at airnow.gov.
  • If you have asthma or other breathing-related issues, keep your inhaler or medication with you.
  • Modify your activities. Minimize exertion when the air quality is poor.
  • If you must be outdoors or exert yourself, such as during move-in, take plenty of breaks.
  • Keep windows and doors closed as much as possible.

For those who are concerned about the air quality, you are welcome to watch a live stream of the university welcome event (at 6 p.m. on Thursday) in Bauman Auditorium.

Tuesday, August 21st, 2018

Welcome Weekend is almost here! In order for our hundreds of new students to have a seamless move-in experience, we need extra cooperation from the staff and students already here tomorrow (Thursday).

  • If your on-campus residence is Pennington, Edwards, Weesner Village, Hobson, Macy, Sutton, LeShana, Gulley or Brandt, we need you to vacate those lots Wednesday evening and stay out of them until Friday morning.
  • If you normally park in the Le Shana lot, please move your cars as close to Fulton Street as possible so that the area in front of the building is clear, or move your cars to the Bauman or Morse lot Wednesday night.
  • Everyone in the Pennington lot and “lollipop area,” Edwards or Weesner Village needs to move to the lot on 99W Wednesday night.
  • Please keep Sheridan Street clear for easier access for our incoming students.
  • The Morse lot and the front lot only of the Roberts Center are also available for Thursday. The lot in between the Roberts Center and Gulley and Brandt halls must be vacated Wednesday night.
  • If you are going on a retreat this week, you MUST move your cars to the Bauman, Morse or 99W lots before leaving on your retreat. Please don’t block up the entire moving-in flow with your left-behind cars!
