Tonight (Monday), the university community is invited to a free presentation by educator and designer Silas Munro at Art Talk, a regularly scheduled gathering that showcases artists from all over the country. Join us from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Chehalem Cultural Center (415 E. Sheridan St.).

Munro engages multi-modal practices that inspire people to be the best versions of themselves in order to effect positive change on society as a whole. His design studio, Poly-Mode, primarily works with cultural institutions and community-based organizations. These collaborations have led to everything from information design of NYC Public City Schools, graphics for protesting activists at Housing Works, publication design for Jacob Lawrence, and the identity of an entire formerly predominately Puerto Rican neighborhood.

A seasoned and dedicated educator, Munro’s pedagogy focuses on image making and typographic systems, expanded and inclusive design studies, our present experience ecology, and novel formats of design pedagogy. He serves as assistant professor of communication arts/graduate graphic design at Otis College of Art and Design, and as guest advisor in the MFA Program in Graphic Design at Vermont College of Fine Arts.

Don’t forget: Passport Days return this Thursday and Friday, Sept. 28-29. If you plan to do any traveling internationally, such as study abroad or Juniors Abroad,  you will need a passport.

The university community is invited to a special presentation, “Peace and the Environment: Theology,” at 7 p.m. tonight (Monday) in Hoover 105. Join us for good conversation centered around the topic of living out a vibrant faith as a part of an environmentally challenged world with speaker Cherice Bock.

The hope is to be able think deeply together about how our vocation and daily practices can integrate an awareness of current environmental problems and work toward solutions with the love of neighbor and nature in mind. The main goal is to inspire creative thinking through emphasizing the beauty and wonder of God’s creation within a biblical framework of hope and neighborly love. Elective chapel credit is available for students.

Do you enjoy playing Spikeball? Are you interested in playing in a fun, competitive competition? The collegiate regional tournament is coming to George Fox on Saturday, Oct. 7!

Registration is online at this link. The cost is $10 a person, which covers snacks, drinks and prizes for high-placing teams. Prizes include new Spikeball pro sets ($120 value), to Spikeball merchandise like T-shirts and glow-in-the-dark clips! The event will kick off at 9 a.m. and go to about 4 p.m.

The physical therapy department is looking for volunteers to participate in a lab session on the shoulder. If you have a problem with your shoulder or upper arm, our lab is the place to be! Our doctor of physical therapy second-year students, along with faculty members, will be performing examinations and giving you direction on how to take care of your condition.

Our Homecoming football game against Wisconsin Eau-Claire is today (Saturday), so please take note of the important information below. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. We’ve got plenty of fun Homecoming activities planned for the game – including a free concert by Hit Machine at the tailgate area prior to the game – and we will be announcing our Homecoming King and Queen at halftime, so make your plans now to join in the fun!

Be sure to move your cars out of the Bauman parking lot and the tennis court parking lot on Friday evening. This space will be dedicated to football fan parking, activities and vendors on Saturday. No parking will be permitted in these lots. 

Homecoming Tailgate Activities
Join us in the Bauman parking lot at 11:30 a.m. for a free concert by Hit Machine and plenty of other activities before the game kicks off.

Entrances to the Football Game
There will be two entrances into the game, and both are located in the Bauman parking lot directly behind the stadium.

Wheeler Sports Center Closed
The Wheeler Sports Center will be closed from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. This means the basketball gym, racquetball courts and locker rooms will be closed. The Fitness Center will remain open for normal business hours, but you will need to enter through the hallway entrance located on the field level, toward the end of the building near the tennis courts. There will be security officers who will ask you where you are headed; just let them know that you are going to work out.

Bauman Walkway
The sidewalk located between the football stadium and Bauman will be closed. Please walk around the building and do not move the barricade.

Circle Parking Lot
The circle parking lot near Wheeler will be closed for the day. This space is reserved for officials to park in. Officials will arrive as early as 10 a.m.

Sideline Passes
No one will be granted field access without a sideline pass. Sideline passes are issued to those who are required to work and/or have official business during the game.

Tickets
Students and staff can show their ID cards at the gate to get into the game free of charge. In addition, all George Fox alumni who check in at the Information Table will receive free admission to the game.

We hope to see you at the game at 1:30 p.m. and the Homecoming tailgates prior to that!

Hello everyone! Swing dancing will be happening tonight (Saturday) in the FoxHole. The beginner lesson starts at 6:30 p.m., followed by the intermediate dance at 7 p.m. and the open dance from 7:30 p.m. on.

The south entrance (by the bridge) to Canyon Commons will be closed during dinner tonight (Saturday). Please access the building via the north entrance for dinner that evening.

Stop by Canyon Commons this Tuesday morning, Sept. 26, to hear a short pop up concert. Bring your lunch, enjoy the sun and get serenaded by two exciting tangos, performed by our string chamber music ensemble.

The performance will be from 11:45 a.m. to noon.

The Wheeler Fitness Center will remain open during all home football games even though the rest of the building is closed. Please use the upstairs hallway entrance on the field level near the tennis courts.

Do you want to practice Spanish conversation? Bring your lunch to the Spanish table and practice speaking with Erick Torres. Erick will be the one at the table with the Maya calendar. This is casual and fun conversation without any pressure!

The table will be open between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. in Canyon Commons each Friday in September, as well as on Oct. 13, 20 and 27, Nov. 3, 10 and 17, and Dec. 1 and 8.

A network of George Fox employee mothers-of-young-children and expectant mothers gathers once a semester for an informal time of connection. This semester we will meet on Friday, Sept. 29, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Canyon Commons 101.

The nursing and social work departments are looking for volunteers to participate in our poverty simulation on Wednesday, Oct. 11, and Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 12:45 to 3 p.m. in Canyon Commons. We would be thrilled if you would join us for one or both dates. If you would like to “job share,” we would be happy to accommodate this as well.

The poverty simulation is a required event for senior social work and nursing students and is dependent upon getting volunteers to help be part of “the community.” Essentially, you will be acting out the part of a business owner or agency member (such as a grocery store clerk, pawn shop owner, day care worker, unemployment officer, DMV employee, etc.). There is nothing you need to do to prepare. A packet will be given to you at the event (before students arrive) with all that you need to know about your part.

You will have the opportunity to watch the students as they assume the role of a family living in poverty and as they go through daily tasks with the added challenge of poverty. It is truly fascinating and eye-opening for all!
