Miller Gym in Wheeler remains closed this week

Crews are continuing extensive resurfacing work on the Miller Gym floor in Wheeler Sports Center this week. The gym is closed through Sunday, June 11, and will reopen on Monday, June 12. Please note: Only the gym is closed; the Fitness Center and the athletics offices will remain open as scheduled.

Please protect our courts and gym area from damage and do not enter the gym during this time. Questions? Contact Dixie Downey (ddowney@georgefox.edu).

Make plans to attend barbecue this Thursday

Join your fellow employees for our summer barbecue on the Minthorn lawn at noon this Thursday, June 8 (in case of rain we’ll be in Canyon Commons). The cost is only $5 per person. Summer student employees are welcome to R.S.V.P. as well.

Use of Wheeler limited to employees, students and approved groups

For safety and stewardship of our facility, please note that the use of the gym and Fitness Center in Wheeler is limited to current students, employees and university-authorized groups only.

Those using the facility will need to be prepared to show your George Fox ID or approved temporary pass to Security Services or athletic department staff. Any other use or exceptions must be approved by Event Services (for outside groups) or the athletic office (for rare individual exceptions to policy).

We are a participating provider for Regence and offer self-pay options for those not on Regence. Our pro-bono clinic is available this summer as well.

George Fox alumni, students featured at special spoken word event

In collaboration with eROI, two alumni of George Fox University, Julio Bautista and Bailie Bowey, are presenting Relevant Matter Spoken Word Night: A Night of Poetry Celebrating Diversity, Inclusion and Authentic Expression. Join us from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, at eROI in Portland.

This event will feature 15 artists, including current students and alumni of George Fox who will perform personal spoken word pieces in the hope that their stories will inspire movement toward healing and reconciliation in the city of Portland. The event is free and will have food and drink provided. eROI is located at 505 N.W. Couch St. #300, in Portland.

Hernandez leads Search Advocacy Training next week

In order to promote equitable hiring practices and inclusivity in the workplace, and to further encourage the Be Known promise to our students, George Fox offers Search Advocacy Training. The workshop series establishes a theoretical foundation of current research about implicit bias and diversity, information about the changing legal landscape in hiring, and an overview of inclusive employment principles.

Rebecca Hernandez will teach a two-day session on Tuesday, June 6, and Thursday, June 8, from 7:30 a.m. until noon. Each day’s session will include a full breakfast, served from 7:30 to 8 a.m., and training from 8 a.m. to  noon. A boxed lunch will be included on June 6, as well as a ticket to the employee barbecue on the quad on June 8.
