Seeking December Employee of the Month nominations

Tuesday, November 24th, 2015

It’s time once again to consider who you are thankful for – someone whose contributions have especially stood out over the last several weeks. If you know someone you believe deserves special recognition for “above and beyond” kind of work, please send an email to Lisa Burton (lburton@georgefox.edu) by Thursday, Dec. 3, with a summary of this colleague’s recent contributions and any other information that makes this person deserving of this award.

The President’s Executive Leadership Team will select the recipient from the nominations submitted, and the winner will be honored with a citation and a $100 Visa gift card at our community meeting Dec. 10.

Congratulations again to Patty Vanier, who was our Employee of the Month for November!

Important reminder from student life office about social media, civility, bias and harassment

Monday, November 23rd, 2015

We want to remind all of us about the expectations of living in a Christ-centered community that honors kindness, grace and civility as important values. We believe that all people are of great worth and value in the eyes of God and seek to increasingly become a campus characterized by loving support of one another.

Cultural humility means that we seek to understand and appreciate others, also created in the image of God, who are different from ourselves. Language and/or behavior that relies on stereotypes or is demeaning toward individuals or groups is absolutely unacceptable for George Fox students and employees, whether it occurs in person, through social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) or anonymously.

Violations of these expectations are taken very seriously by the university, especially when directed at another because of their race, sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, religion or disabilities. We want to remind everyone that George Fox has harassment, discrimination and bias-related incident policies that can be viewed at studenthandbook.georgefox.edu.

Any incidents of harassment, discrimination or bias should be reported immediately to the Office of Student Life. We would also encourage community members to hold one another accountable for what we say and do in this important area. May God enable each of us to be more and more like Jesus in the way we treat one another!

Blessings,

– Brad Lau,
VP for Student Life

All invited to Shalom tonight in Cap and Gown Room

Monday, November 23rd, 2015

Be sure to join us in Shalom tonight (Tuesday) as we celebrate God’s goodness in an Ebenezer service at 9 p.m. in the Cap and Gown Room.

This is a great way to explore how our forebears have engaged in thankfulness and celebration throughout history, as well as engaging with community in a wonderful time for worship. Students can also get some of that elective chapel credit. Don’t miss it!

Also, at 6 p.m. in Lewis 1 on Tuesdays before Shalom, we’re teaching artisan bread making! Be sure to take advantage of this awesome opportunity.

Questions? Contact Amanda Kitz at akitz13@georgefox.edu.

Weather-related campus closure information

Monday, November 23rd, 2015

Winter is coming. Following is our process for announcing campus closure information. The provost will make the decision whether or not to close the Newberg campus, Portland Center and Salem site for daytime classes by 6:30 a.m. or 2:15 p.m. for evening classes. This applies to all days of the week, including Saturday. Decisions at the Redmond site will be made by the professor.

Major considerations are road conditions, ice, utility service disruption, and how long the severe weather or emergency is likely to last. To find out if a closure decision has been made when bad weather occurs:

  • Visit the George Fox flashalert.net page at flashalert.net/news. html?id=32 (this is the first site updated).
  • Listen to local radio and television stations. Each campus will be identified separately.
  • Call the George Fox University switchboard at 503-538-8383.

More information on campus closure policies can be found at georgefox.edu/closure.

Help create Christmas kits for refugees, foster children

Monday, November 23rd, 2015

Embrace Ministries and International Justice Mission are teaming up to gather supplies and create kits for Syrian refugee families in the Greek Isles and foster children in Yamhill County.

We will be collecting completed kits and boxes and donated supplies from now to finals week. There will also be a packing party on Sunday, Dec. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Bruin Den.

While you are home for the next few days, take some time to gather supplies to help refugee families and children entering the foster care system such as age-appropriate toys and toiletries. There are boxes available to fill in the SpIL Annex in the Student Union Building.

Drop off fully finished kits or individual supplies at the SpIL Annex in the SUB or in the blue bins around campus in Bauman and the Bruin Den.

For lists of supplies, go to georgefox.edu/embrace or email Mikayla (mgreenwell12@georgefox.edu) or Grace (glownsbery12@georgefox.edu).

All invited to join in MLK Day of Service on Jan. 18

Monday, November 23rd, 2015

Do you love to serve? Does volunteering for the larger vision of Martin Luther King Jr. inspire you? How about in Portland?

Your chance to get involved with our neighboring community is finally here, with the opportunity to be a part of MLK Day of Service in Portland!

MLK Day of Service is a day we are able to live into this vision Dr. King had for serving and justice. Though one day of service is never enough to fully celebrate him or what he stood for, we hope you are able to join us for this day of service and recognition of Dr. King.

MLK Day of Service takes place on Monday, Jan. 18. You can register and find more information about what the day will look like here.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email spirituallife@georgefox.edu.
