Bon Appetit offers picnic lunches Aug. 3-14

The Bruin Den will be closed Aug. 3-14, but we’ve still got lunch covered for you! Stop by the Bruin Den Tuesday or Wednesday (July 28-29) between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and purchase a picnic punch card. You may also purchase the card in the food service office any day (Monday through Friday) between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

For only $30 you receive a card good for five picnic-style lunches, which will be served out of the Groovy Bruin on the quad and you will also receive a 10 percent discount on your first “lunch club” card if purchased at the same time. There will be a variety of delicious sandwiches, sides and desserts, plus a beverage that you can customize to create a lunch just the way you like it!

Lunches may also be purchased at the Groovy Bruin (cash or check only) during this time period for $6.75. Savor summer, it’s time for a picnic!

All-employee meeting set for this Thursday

In hopes of including everyone, we have changed Mark Ocker’s retirement gathering to a reception at the Portland Center from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14. Mark has touched the lives of many people in the George Fox community over the years, and we look forward to an evening of celebration. There is no cost to attend, and all are invited.

Interested in leading students? Lead a Life Group

We are looking for employees to lead eight-week-long Life Groups for undergraduate students this fall. Groups are designed to foster spiritual growth of students and meet weekly at the time of your choosing.

If your department has students who will be arriving to campus early this fall and living in campus housing, you can still submit applications even though the “Early Arriver” deadline to notify housing has passed (July 24). If you have questions or need the “Early Arriver” form sent your way, you can email housing@georgefox.edu to have that sent to you.

Vehicle registration portal is now open

Security Services is pleased to announce that the new vehicle registration system is up and running! Here are some tips to make the registration process smoother:

  1. The link to register is on MyGFU and is underneath the “University Resources” heading.
  2. Have your vehicle’s registration card from the DMV with you when you register for needed information.
  3. Important Change: Any vehicle or license plate changes that need to be made AFTER you have registered need to be done by security office personnel. Come into the office during business hours or email Nadine Kincaid at nkincaid@georgefox.edu.
  4. Staff, faculty and adjuncts are given one gratis permit to use between vehicles. If you wish to have a permit for each vehicle, please come to the security office to register additional vehicles and to pay the $5 cash fee per permit.
  5. All staff permits will be delivered via campus mail to your university PO box number, so please have that handy when you register.
  6. For this initial year only, all newly assigned adjunct permits will be valid for 1.5 years, until December 2016. Thereafter they will expire on Dec. 31 of each year. Staff and full-time faculty permits do not expire.
  7. Portland employees need to register only if they frequently come to the Newberg campus.

Important information about vehicle registration for 2015-16 academic year

Security Services is pleased to announce that the new vehicle registration system is up and running!

Here are some tips to help you navigate the vehicle registration process.

  1. The link to register is on MyGFU and is underneath the “GFU Resources” heading.
  2. Have your vehicle’s registration card from the DMV with you when you register, as you will need the information on that card to register your vehicle.
  3. Commuters can register up to two vehicles, but the permits will be sent in TWO separate envelopes.
  4. IMPORTANT NEW CHANGE: Any vehicle or license plate changes that need to be made AFTER you have registered need to be done by security office personnel. Come into the office during business hours or email Nadine Kincaid at nkincaid@georgefox.edu.
  5. Please allow up to two weeks for your permit to arrive to the mailing address you indicate.

Bon Appetit celebrates the roots of barbecue Thursday

Be sure to join Bon Appetit tomorrow (Thursday) as we celebrate the roots of barbecue, Texas style. We are serving up traditional smoked-beef brisket with regional side dishes out of our food cart on the quad from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

We will also be holding a drawing for a free prize in the Bruin Den, so stop by and sign up to be eligible to win a terrific gift bag full of barbecue-related items!

Reminder: Portland Center employee photo shoot is today

Attention Portland Center employees: University photographer Joel Bock will be at the Portland Center for a scheduled photo shoot today (Wednesday) from 12:30 to 2 p.m. He will set up out front of the south building on the west side.

If your employee photo on the university website is in need of updating, this is your chance to get it done! Not sure if you need a retake? If your existing photo is more than two years old, is poorly lit, is out of focus, and/or has a gray, brown or black background, it’s time for an update.

No appointment is necessary, and each photo subject will be done in only two to three minutes. Solid, neutral clothing colors are recommended.

Vote for Sammy Naluai in NCAA’s Elite 89 contest

Only hours remain before voting closes in an online contest to pick your favorite Elite 89 student-athlete from the 2014-15 season. Among the contestants is George Fox wing Sammy Naluai, who was the Bruins’ “sixth man” on a squad that reached the finals of the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament and went 32-1 on the season.

The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 89 championships. Last week’s voting narrowed the field down to 30 semifinalists. Voting can be done on this page and closes at 5 p.m. (Pacific Time) tonight (Tuesday), when the field will be narrowed down to 10 finalists. Be sure to click “Save Votes” at the bottom of the page to register your vote.

The winner will be celebrated from NCAA social media accounts on July 24. Be sure to cast a vote for Sammy! You can read more about her award here.

Department lanyard badges to be issued for mail pick-up

Mail services will be issuing new department lanyard badges for this upcoming academic year. These badges are what your student workers will need to use when they come pick up mail and packages at mail services; packages will not be released if your students do not have the badge.

Badges will  be going out this week. Therefore, if you do not receive your badge by Aug. 17, please notify Richard Silver ASAP so your department badge can be issued. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Richard at rsilver@georgefox.edu or ext. 2551.

Wheeler access road closure

The Wheeler access road is closed until Wednesday, Aug. 12, at the corner between the tennis courts and Edwards Residence Hall. The west half of the bridge will be constructed on the Edwards Hall front lawn, and the end of it will block the road at this location.

Who’s on campus this week …

The Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends (NWYM) is holding its annual church conference here this week. This is the longest-running summer conference at George Fox. The NWYM is a community of evangelical Friends churches who join together in worship and service to impact society through love in action.

The Chinese Evangelical Church Retreat arrives for its annual event on Friday, July 24. Several Chinese churches from Oregon and Washington gather together each summer to worship together and share what God is doing in and through their congregations.
