Check out award-winning debate team in action this Monday

Your dreams of seeing our award-winning, internationally ranked debate team in action are finally coming true!

This Monday, April 8, at 7 p.m., come to Hoover 105 and watch a public debate featuring the George Fox team on the following topic: “We regret social networks.”

Coffee and refreshments will be served, and there will also be opportunities for audience participation. Should be a raucous good time!

Chamber Concert takes Bauman stage tonight

Don’t forget tonight’s (Thursday’s) Spring Chamber Concert at 7:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

The event will include performances by our Keyboard Ensemble (“Venetian Boat Song,” “Rondo”), Women’s Chorale (“Tundra,” Cantate Domino”), String Ensemble (“Last Spring, Op. 34,” “Simple Symphony, Op. 4”), Chamber Singers (“Alleluia,” “Exultate Deo,” “Stand by Me”), String Quartet (“String Quartet No. 12, Op. 96 in F Major”) and Handbell Ringers (“The Bells of Notre Dame,” “Under the Sea”).

There is no admission charge.

Faculty recitals scheduled in Bauman this Friday, Sunday

Come support our music faculty at a pair of recitals this week. At 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 5, Brent Weaver will present “From Grief to Joy,” featuring some of his original compositions and performances by students. The event will include performances by Nathanael Ankeny (saxophone), James Pick (piano), Ken Beare (tenor), Maria Choban (piano) and the university’s Brass Ensemble.

On Sunday, April 7, a 3 p.m. recital featuring voice faculty is scheduled. Maggie Daane (soprano), Cynthia McGladrey (mezzo-soprano), Matthew Hayward (lyric baritone), Rebekah Hansen (viola), Barbara Stewart (piano) and James Pick (piano) will perform. Selections includes works by Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Bernstein, Ravel and Brahms.

Both recitals are scheduled in Bauman Auditorium, and admission is free.

Admissions Summer Internship

The admissions office is accepting applications for summer internship. Summer interns are responsible for and/or involved with a wide range of admissions functions, including giving campus tours, communication with prospective students (in person, over the phone and via e-mail and Facebook), data entry, mail processing, stuffing and sorting bulk mailings, filing, database procedures, handling inventory and some front office reception.

A position announcement and application details are available on Bruin Careers. Applications are due on Monday, April 8.

Brain Brawl

Saturday concert to benefit Swaziland missions

The Bruin Grounds is hosting a benefit concert featuring George Fox alumnus Benjamin Tissell on Saturday, April 6, at 8 p.m. Proceeds will support Ameena Bossier and Bri Phelps, who are going to serve in Swaziland for two months this summer as interns.

The Bruin Grounds will be donating a percentage of what it makes that night from drink purchases. So come enjoy some great music and purchase coffee, milkshakes, smoothies, etc., and support your fellow classmates. Invite your friends!

Ushers needed for spring play ‘Enchanted April’

I’m house manager for the theatre department’s production of Enchanted April, and I’m looking for some ushers!

If you come help out with the show, you get to see the show for free in return! After duties are done, you just chill and watch the show, or if you’re posted on door duty I’ll give you a ticket for you to come back on another showtime.

Performances are:

  • Thursday, April 11 (7:30 p.m.)
  • Friday, April 12 (7:30 p.m.)
  • Saturday, April 13 (7:30 p.m.)
  • Sunday, April 14 (2 p.m.)
  • Thursday, April 18 (7:30 p.m.)

  • Saturday, April 20 (7:30 p.m.)
  • Sunday, April 21 (2 p.m.)

Arrival times for ushers will be about one and a half hours before showtime (or less). So I would need you to arrive at 6 p.m. on evening shows and 12:30 p.m. for matinees.

Bruin Preview – Help Needed!

This Thursday we have a large group of prospective students here for our Bruin Preview event and we are still in need of some hosts for those students staying overnight.

If you are interested in helping a student in their college decision process by hosting them for the night, please get in touch with the Admissions Office asap!  Hosts will be required to attend a 4 p.m. meeting in Hoover 105 on Thursday, April 4 in order to meet their students. Snacks will be provided!

Be considerate of Bruin Preview guests when parking April 4-5

Please help us welcome our guests by parking somewhere other than the Stevens and Hoover parking lots on Thursday afternoon and all day Friday. Drop in to celebrate your achievements at our open house event, scheduled from 4 to 7:30 p.m. today (Wednesday) in Room 155 at the Portland Center! You can meet with student accounts, registrar and alumni representatives, pick up your regalia, enter to win door prizes, and enjoy light refreshments.

A representative from Jostens will also be on site with rings and announcements.

If you are unable to attend Grad Night, please talk to your program administrator or administrative assistant for instructions on obtaining your regalia and necessary information.

The owners of Bonaventura Authentic Italian Sausage and Deli in downtown Newberg are donating $1 to George Fox for each “Bruin Bruschetta” sandwich sold since their grand opening. And they want your help to determine where their gift should go.

Stop by Bonaventura during business hours (10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.) Wednesday, April 3, through Friday, April 5, to cast your vote.

  • The Annual Fund – Institutional scholarships for 80 percent of all undergraduate students

Join in Cesar Chavez discussion this evening

You are invited to be part of a Cesar Chavez discussion (“Si se Puede”) today (Wednesday) beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Klages Dining Room. We will be learning how to make homemade tortillas and salsa en molcajete. After that, we will enjoy our food while we discuss the “Si Se Puede” theme. Come and learn about the Latino culture from Latino students.
