Bon Appetit posts Good Friday weekend hours of service

Hours of service for meal plan students will be changing to the following for the next three days:

Thursday dinner: 4:30-6:30 p.m.
Friday breakfast: 9-10 a.m.
Friday lunch: 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Friday dinner: 5-6 p.m.
Saturday breakfast: 8-9 a.m.

We will reopen at 4:30 p.m. for dinner on March 29 at the end of spring break.

Bruin Den, Villa Cafe closed on Good Friday, spring break

Both the Bruin Den and the Villa Cafe will close at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 20, and will remain closed for Good Friday and throughout all of spring break. Both will reopen at their normal time on Monday, March 31.

Only 3 days left to complete the Health Survey

Over 850 students have completed the National College Health Assessment already.  However, there are only 4 days left to complete the survey. If you haven’t already taken the survey, we’d really appreciate having you do so. 

Just click on the link that was sent to your GFU email account and answer the questions. You get a spiritual formation credit just for completing the survey and are automaticcally entered into a drawing for great prizes.

The aggregate student body results are used for policy and programming decisions so it’s vitally important that we have responses from as many students as possible.  And remember, it’s confidential!

University closes to observe Good Friday March 21

The university’s offices and libraries will be closed on Friday, March 21, to observe Good Friday. Newberg and Portland libraries also will be closed over Easter weekend.

University Store closed on Good Friday, Easter weekend

The University Store will close at 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 20, and will remain closed for Good Friday and the Easter weekend. The store will reopen at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, March 24. Spring break store hours next week will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The bookstore will be closed on Saturday, March 29.

Farewell reception for Vickie McBride set for Thursday

Vickie McBride’s (Plant Services) final day at the university will be Thursday, March 20. She is leaving to get married and will be traveling with her new husband. A farewell reception is set for 3 p.m. Thursday, March 20, in the Plant Services break room. Drop by to say goodbye and wish Vickie well.

Faculty: Encourage students to attend career, grad school fair

The First Avenue Career and Graduate School Fair is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 3, at the University of Portland’s Chiles Center. The event will feature more than 160 recruiters and give students the opportunity to learn about numerous job opportunities and the nonprofit industry at a special presentation. Please encourage your students to attend.

IT Support during Spring Break available through the service desk

Portland Center IT support during Spring Break (March 24-27) will be available 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Monday through Thursday by calling the Service Desk at ext. 2569.

Bruce Arnold, Portland Center IT Specialist will be in Utah with one of the undergraduate Spring Serve trips.  Prayers for the team as they interact with our Mormon sisters and brothers would be appreciated.

Car care service offered through ‘Deal of the Week’

Inside Promotions, a business capstone class, is offering a “Deal of the Week” with Doran Automotive of Newberg. Show your university ID and get lube, oil, and filter service for $19.95. The offer also includes a 50-point inspection and 10 percent off recommended services. The deal runs through April 25. Doran Automotive is located at 901 Meridian St.

Capstone project offers custom T-shirts, apparel

A senior capstone project, Universi(tee) Design and Printing, is available to create T-shirts for groups, sports teams, or dorm floors. The business custom designs and prints inexpensive T-shirts and other apparel for any situation. All proceeds go to the Patrick Kibler Memorial Fund.

Housing Form Update

Attention Students:

 We have been having some technical difficulties with the housing form.  We hope to have it up and running very soon. 

Once the housing form is up, go to Bruindata, click on My Data, and click on Housing Group Sign-ups.  Your housing code will be in the first cell.  If you are the person filling out the form for your group, you will enter in your roommates’ housing codes below.

You should receive an email from Megan Marsh once the housing form is available.

christine-stacey-for-web.jpgChristine Stacey joined the undergraduate admissions office as a counselor last week. She arrives from Gordon College in Wenham, Mass., where she was a lead teacher at the institution’s La Vida Center for Outdoor Education from 2006 to 2007 and an interim office manager during the summer of 2007. She also worked as a facility director for a gymnastics academy in 2006-07. Christine earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Eastern University in St. Davids, Pa., in 2005. She lives in Portland with her family and is engaged to a George Fox alumnus, Richard McNeal (’06).

Chuck Conniry (Seminary) was named dean of George Fox Evangelical Seminary earlier this month. Chuck has been at the seminary for 10 years as director of its doctor of ministry program.

Robin Ashford, Alex Rolfe, and Karen Coronado (Library) presented “Zotero: The Next Generation Research Tool?” at the annual Online Northwest Conference on Feb. 22 at Oregon State University. The presentation examined the newest version of Zotero, a tool used to collect, manage, and cite research sources. The three George Fox presenters looked at Zotero’s features, technology, limitations, and how it compares with Endnote and Refworks.

Sylvette Norré (French), Viki Defferding (Spanish), and Debbie Berhó (Spanish) were conference co-chairs, hosting the Oregon Confederation of Foreign Language Teachers for their spring conference on the Newberg Campus March 1. More than 150 teachers from across the state were in attendance. Michinobu Iimori, adjunct professor of music, provided luncheon music on traditional Japanese instruments.

Paul Otto (History) was awarded a fellowship for research at the Huntington Library in San Marino, Calif., for next year. He will be an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellow for two months. Paul also accepted appointment to the Exhibition Scholarly Advisory Committee for the exhibition “Discovery and Invention: The Worlds of Henry Hudson” at the Museum of the City of New York. Finally, Paul was the keynote speaker at the regional Alpha Chi (national honor society) meeting at Cascade College in Portland on March 7. His lecture was “Going Native: White Indians Take Hollywood Films Captive.”

Bruce Strom (School of Professional Studies) wrote a column, “Do self-assessment before starting or expanding venture,” for the Idaho Press-Tribune. He also wrote a column titled “Tax and organization issues for small businesses” for the March issue of the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce Small Business Success Center News.

The Boise Center, in partnership with the Greater Boise Chamber of Commerce, hosted a prerecorded broadcast from New York City called “Global Athenaeum – Leadership in the 21st Century.” The primary audience was women leaders from the greater Boise area. Bruce Strom, Rae Casey, and Chris Young from the Boise Center and Nancy Almquist (Development) were the principal faculty and staff involved in planning and hosting the event.

Dale Isaak (Health and Human Performance) has been selected to receive an Athletic Trainer Service Award for his dedication to his profession and his commitment to his local and national associations. The award winners will be introduced at the National Athletic Trainers’ Association annual meeting and clinical symposia in June in St. Louis.

This award was given in recognition of Dale’s willingness to serve not only the local and national associations, but also his community. He has donated his time and expertise at a variety of sports venues during football and basketball seasons and during the summer months with the Les Schwab Bowl and the St. Paul Rodeo.

Loren Kerns (Seminary) and his wife, Tiffany, welcomed their fourth child, Wesley Bennett, at 6:13 p.m. on March 1. The baby weighed 6 pounds, 1 ounce and was 19 1/2 inches long.

Staff Development Committee nomination deadline is March 27

It’s time to nominate individuals for the Staff Development Committee. Visit the web-nomination form and choose four names you would like to nominate for the committee. To be eligible to serve, members must be employed at least three-quarters time over nine months and have been employed for at least one year. Elected members will serve a three-year term. Elections will be held in April.

Please make your nominations no later than Thursday, March 27.

If you would like a paper copy of the nomination form, contact Patty Findley (Athletics). Patty will mail you a paper copy. Once you fill it out, return it to Patty at Box 6147 no later than March 27.
