Swing by professors’ pottery, textile sale tomorrow

This First Friday, Dec. 1, adjunct professors Jennifer Loop and Breanne Sherwood will be teaming up to sell their work in downtown Newberg. The pieces include ceramic work by Jennifer and hand-printed work (cards, bags, fabric) by Breanne.

Find us in Jennifer’s pink trailer pop-up shop in its usual First Friday location, between Pulp & Circumstance and the Blue Trout Gallery. Our special Christmas hours will be from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Summer internships available through Emerging Leaders program

More than 120 summer internships at leading Portland companies and organizations are being made available to students of color through the Emerging Leaders Internship Program (ELI). The goal is to increase the number of diverse people who are in leadership throughout the Portland area, and you could be one of them!

Join us at International Chapel tomorrow night

All are invited to International Chapel tomorrow (Thursday) from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Intercultural Resource Center.

This week our chapel speaker will be Ping-Yi Shi, who will share with us a Scripture that is meaningful to her from Matthew 6:25-34: “Do not worry, trust the Lord.”

Ping-Yi grew up in a farm in Taiwan and has been serving international students since 2003. She has worked in nursing for more than 10 years and served as a nurse and as a teacher at a nursing college in Taiwan.

We will begin with a meal together, followed by our chapel speaker, with some time for small-group discussion and prayer. It is a great time of coming together and being encouraged. All students are welcome! Chapel credit will be available.

Gift card drive launched for hungry children in Newberg community

The Office for Spiritual Life has become aware of a need in the Newberg School District with regard to the upcoming holiday break. Forty-eight percent of students in the Newberg School District participate in the free lunch program, and 168 of the students experience homelessness.

Over the winter break, these children and families will have difficulty getting the meals that they need. The spiritual life office is collecting monetary donations and gift cards to local grocery stores and restaurants to aid our neighbors during the Christmas holiday. Please direct gift cards and/or donations to the Office for Spiritual Life before Dec. 15. Thank you!

Free women’s self-defense class offered on campus Dec. 6

On Wednesday, Dec. 6, residence life will offer a women’s self-defense class from 7 to 9:30 p.m. for George Fox students and employees (location TBA). Teaching it will be an officer in the Newberg-Dundee Police Department who has offered these classes in the local community for the last decade.

The class size will be limited. Female students can sign up (free of charge) in the student life office on the third floor of the Stevens Center. Participants will also be required to to sign a waiver form in order to participate. All participants need to be 18 years or older as of Dec. 6.

The class will involve a mixture of listening and practice. The instructor is able to modify and adapt techniques to match most physical limitations, so please do not self-select out of this training due to physical limitations.

Employees invited to Christmas Concert, open house on Dec. 10

Robin and Ruth Baker cordially invite employees to celebrate together the great mystery of Christ the Lord at the Christmas Concert on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 2:30 p.m. in Bauman Auditorium.

Employees are entitled to four complimentary tickets for Sunday’s matinee or a single ticket for any of the other performances (on Dec. 8 or 9). Following the concert on Sunday, employees are invited to a Christmas open house at the president’s home from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at 402 S. College St. in Newberg.

You can select your concert tickets online at this link (be sure to select “GFU Employee” in the drop-down menu on the page that pops up after making your seat selection). If selecting your complimentary seats for Sunday, you may disregard the note that states employees are only entitled to one ticket per event; however, you must still select “Okay, I will bring my ID to the door” in the drop-down menu.

Volunteers still needed to usher at midyear commencement on Dec. 16

The Academic Affairs office is still looking for volunteers to usher at midyear commencement on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 11 a.m. We’d love to have you join us as we celebrate our graduates on their big day! If you choose to help, the time commitment will be from 9:30 a.m. to around 12:30 p.m. All George Fox employees who serve as ushers will have the option to receive $50 through payroll or take three hours off in lieu of payment.

Attend RA information meeting tonight

Interested in being an RA for the 2018-19 school year? Come to the RA info meeting in Hoover 105 tonight (Wednesday) from 9 to 10 p.m.

Residence Life is looking for students that exhibit Christian maturity, humility, and leadership skills for our 2018-19 leadership teams. Presently, 66 students serve as Resident Assistants and Assistant Area Coordinators. We are looking for students who (a) seek to be stretched and transformed in their leadership roles, (b) value the diversity of our faith community, and (c) desire to invest deeply in the growth of the community.

On-campus and commuting students are welcome to come and learn about this leadership opportunity. Attendance is not required in order to become an RA, but we encourage those who are interested to come and find out more about the role.

Join the fun of kit-packing party during ‘Holiday Hangout’ Friday night

SpIL and ASC would love to have you participate in a kit-packing party during “Holiday Hangout,” scheduled this Friday, Dec. 1, from 8 to 10 p.m. in Canyon Commons.

Employees and students alike are invited to participate, and each housing area is asked to bring the following items:

  • EDG: Combs and brushes
  • RAE: Toothbrushes
  • HAN: Washcloths
  • HMS: Toothpaste and floss
  • PCWB: Bars of soap
  • HAW: Coloring books/crayons
  • Commuters: Toys (stuffed animals, Legos, cars, dolls, etc.)

The boxes will be packed for children transitioning into foster care through the Department of Human Services and refugee kits through Medical Teams International.

Help nursing department collect socks for children’s hospital

As we head into the Christmas season, Legacy Randall Children’s Hospital is hosting a sock drive for the Portland community. They are asking for new socks for all ages, with the goal of giving out 26,000 pairs of socks. We’d like to help them with that goal!

The nursing class of 2018 invites you to join us in this cause. If you would like to donate a new pair of socks, please visit the nursing department office on the second floor of Hoover.
