Amy Dee and Ken Badley (School of Education) will present “Authorizing Ourselves in the Classroom” at a Faculty Teaching Forum scheduled from 12:40 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, in Cap and Gown A.

The discussion will cover how professors authorize themselves in front of students and how this happens in a culture of care, “informationism,” and a new generation of students’ expectations.

To reserve a lunch, e-mail Jere Witherspoon (jwithers@georgefox.edu) by 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 2. Everyone is welcome to attend the session, whether bringing a lunch or reserving a lunch.

All faculty — full time, part time, and adjunct — are invited to attend Faculty Teaching Forums (FTFs). The schedule of upcoming sessions is available online. Video podcasts of FTFs will be available on iTunesU.

The Community Garden is getting ready for its fourth annual season. If you are interested in finding out what’s involved, please come to a short meeting on Monday, March 1, to find out. This is open for students or faculty or staff and others.

The garden is a great way to have inexpensive, delicious food. You can be a member even if you will be out of Newberg for the summer. Come find out more at the Hoover Lounge (second floor). You have the option of attending an 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. meeting.

I am looking for two actors, one male and one female, who are available this coming Monday, March 1st, from about 1:40-4. For my Intermediate Directing class we direct short scenes from actual movies for an hour during our class. The university’s science departments will host a Science Open House for George Fox families from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, in EHS and Wood-Mar. Come enjoy a fun-filled evening delighting in science. There will be interactive displays, thrilling demonstrations, and a child-friendly dinner. Come join us!

This Monday, March 1, Melanie Hulbert, associate professor of sociology, will speak on issues of body image and popular culture for the university’s Liberal Arts in Critical Issues Forum. Melanie specializes in sociology gender issues and the family. She recently received an award of excellence from WorldatWork Journal for her research on gender roles in the workplace.

The Trauma Response Institute, coordinated by the Graduate Department of Counseling, is launching a program to assist humanitarian aid workers.

The focus of upcoming meetings is in support of Haitian missionaries and earthquake relief workers. Meetings are scheduled from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on March 2, April 6 and May 4 at the Portland Center. There is no cost to attend.

The purpose is to offer simple tools to help prepare for or mitigate the emotional impact of witnessing severe human suffering. If a Haiti responder flier finds its way into your mailbox, please consider giving it to your pastor, missions chairperson, or friend connected to service in Haiti. Also, for George Fox employees interested in joining a TRI responder peer support team, stay tuned for information about a training in psychological first-aid for peer responders.

Several music students will take to the Bauman Auditorium stage during the first week of March to present recitals. Come support these students as they perform. Admission is free.

Dr. Chris Koch, professor of psychology and director of assessment, will present the spring 2010 Faculty Lecture, now in its 55th year. In “It’s (Almost) All in the Eyes” Chris will present research combining strategies used to study attention and perception in order to examine how people perceive facial emotions.

The presentation is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, in Hoover 105.

The Career Services Office of George Fox University with help from the Graduate Department of Clinical Psychology is conducting a research study on the college to career transition for women graduating from college and moving into the workplace. We hope to use the results to better serve our graduating women in the future as they face this transition and would like to specifically offer you follow-up consultations if desired.

Come see our own University Players as they present a worship experience through story, drama, movement and song. The “Players Presents” performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. both Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26-27, in  Wood-Mar Auditorium. Admission is free; however, a $3 donation is encouraged.

The Players, a touring group made up of eight students, will showcase their talents in this year’s theme, “Threshold.” A short profile of the troupe is now on the university’s website.

On Friday, Feb. 26, a group of women will meet to participate in serving women who are involved in the sex trade in Portland. We will eat dinner together at 4:30 p.m. in the Bruin Den and then leave for Rahab’s Sisters, an organization that provides hospitality and a supportive presence to women marginalized by the sex industry, at 5 p.m.

There, we will listen to and serve women from the streets of Portland. For more information, contact Ashley Brown at outofthedawn@msn.com.

Student supervisors, please submit your students’ February time sheets to HR right away – by Wednesday, March 3, at 3 p.m.

Please be sure the student’s name, ID number and cost center number is legible on each one. Also, don’t forget to sign them and be sure the students did as well. If the student is not available to sign it this week, please send it without the signature, and HR will contact the student. Please do not send students to HR to sign their time sheets. Federal Work Study regulations require that students delivering their own time sheets must have them placed, by you, in a sealed envelope.

If you happen to still have any paperwork to submit on a newly hired student who worked in February, please hand-deliver it right away– no later than Monday, March 1. We need to set up students in the system before the time sheets arrive.

Just a reminder that a senior business capstone group is planning a Community Saturday Market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday, Feb. 27, in EHS.

The event will include food, live music and a wide variety of goods from local vendors. Participants will include authors Dirk Barram, Jim Foster and Erin Macy, as well as vendors Sweetest Thing Cupcakes and Yamhill Candles. A percentage of sales will go toward the Patrick Kibler Fund and the Women’s and Children’s Shelter of Newberg.

On Wednesday, March 3, Holocaust survivor Ursula Bacon will speak at 7 p.m. in Hoover 103. Ursula fled Nazi Germany with her parents in 1939 and landed in Shanghai, China, along with more than 18,000 other Middle European Jews. The family spent most of the war years in a Japanese-controlled “Designated Area,” often referred to as the “Shanghai Ghetto.”
