Mark your calendars and register now to conclude the academic year in the best way. “The Deep Dive” offers faculty the opportunity to work on a project, delve into research, or develop a course in a serene and inspiring environment.

In addition to solo work, you can collaborate, rest, and play with your colleagues. For a more reflective experience, a self-guided spiritual retreat is available.

Of the faculty who attended last year, 95% said they would return and one faculty member wrote that it was their best experience in nine years at George Fox.

The retreat will be hosted at Washington Family Ranch from Monday, May 12 through Thursday, May 15. The deadline to register is April 18, 2025.

Track options include:

• Track One – Guided intensive to work collaboratively on your first Faculty Growth Plan
• Track Two – Guided intensive to work collaboratively on your Third-Year Review Portfolio
• Self-guided – Open to all faculty to work on a professional project

Lodging assignments are dependent on your chosen track. Most people will share a room with one person.

The Center for Peace and Justice invites you to a presentation entitled “Journey of Hope,” featuring Elio Constantine. Constantine oversees the Middle East Center for Justice and Missions, a ministry of the charity Heart For Lebanon.

Don’t miss this powerful message on transforming lives through faith and action. Join us tomorrow (Thursday) at 7 p.m. in Hoover 105. Chapel credit is available for students, and for those who can’t attend in person a livestream link is available.

In his presentation, Constantine will explore how we are called to live in justice and how a biblical approach to justice is applicable anywhere in the world. He will also address the root causes of injustices in Lebanon and the surrounding region.

Professors will be entering midterm grades in My.GeorgeFox between Oct. 12 and Oct. 16. These midterm grades provide important insight into your academic progress in your courses.

If you receive a D or an F as a midterm course grade, contact your professor to discuss the likelihood of improving your grade. If it seems unlikely that your grade will improve, contact your CAP coach as soon as possible to discuss the effects of withdrawing from a class.

A few points to consider:

• If you withdraw from a class, your transcript will show a “W” and your GPA will not be affected.
• If you receive an F in the course, your GPA will suffer.
• The last day to withdraw from a class is Sunday, Dec. 8
• In some instances, it might make sense to withdraw from one class now so you can focus on other courses.
• At this point in the semester, students who withdraw from some but not all of their classes will not have any changes made to their financial aid or student account charges.
• If you are currently on a financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) Warning or SAP Academic Plan, check with your financial aid counselor to confirm whether withdrawing from any courses will affect your financial aid. If you have any concerns about your SAP standing or academic plan, please contact your financial aid counselor.

• Instructions for checking your grades in My.GeorgeFox can be found at this link.
• If your professor has not yet given you a midterm grade, check your grades in Canvas. Schedule a conversation with your professor right away if you have questions or are unsure about your progress in the course.

Students who fail all their classes and do not complete the semester may have their financial aid package affected. If you have federal financial aid and are not passing any classes, please contact your student accounts advisor immediately.

Additional information regarding grades and withdrawing from classes:

• Please be advised that the university has extended the class withdrawal deadline for the benefit of our students. The new deadline is now Sunday before the last week of class, which is Dec. 8.
• For full-semester classes, this is the end of week 15 rather than week 10. For this fall semester, the deadline is Sunday, Dec. 8. For classes that meet in shorter sessions within the semester, you can find their specific withdrawal deadlines listed in the class details on class.georgefox.edu.

Daniel Kang and the Faculty Scholarship and Achievement Committee invite you to join them for the Fall Faculty Lecture on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 6 p.m. in Hoover 105. Nathan Slegers, PhD, professor of mechanical engineering, and winner of the 2023-24 Faculty Achievement Award for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship, is the featured faculty speaker.

Slegers will speak on “The Art of the Three: How Engineering and Ingenuity is Decoding the Science of Basketball Shooting.” Please join us as he presents his research regarding three metrics he has discovered which identify good shooters. These metrics decode some hidden nuances within the art of the “three,” and provide insights into how to become a better shooter.

The Hadlock Student Center weight room will be temporarily closed tomorrow (Wednesday) from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for a new equipment delivery.

We are thrilled to announce Hadlock will be receiving three new pieces of equipment: a smith machine, an additional cable machine, and an assisted dip and pull-up machine. This closure will allow us to reset and reorganize the fitness area to house these new pieces of equipment.

Doctor of Physical Therapy students are conducting a study, “A Biomechanical Analysis of the Floor Transfer in Community-Dwelling Older Adults,” overseen by principal investigators Lyndsay Stutzenberger and Tyler Whited. We are interested in how older adults get up from the floor.

To participate in our study, you must

• Be 50-80 years of age
• Live independently or in an assisted living facility
• Be able to walk independently at least 15 feet with or without an assistive device
• Take a cognitive test
• Be willing to attempt to get up from a chair and from the floor

To participate, you must NOT have a diagnosis of a neurological condition or a current illness or health issue that would make performing study activities unsafe.

If you’re interested in participating in this study and meet the above criteria, you would come to the Medical Sciences Building on Werth Boulevard, where we would ask you to sign an informed consent form, answer questions on a questionnaire, perform a short mental status examination, and have your vitals (blood pressure and heart rate) taken. Depending on the results of these assessments, you may or may not be eligible for the study.

If you’re eligible, you’ll be asked to participate in one testing session that takes up to approximately one hour. During testing sessions you will fill out questionnaires and be asked to attempt to stand up from a chair without using your arms and get up from the floor. You will not be paid for being in this study or reimbursed for any costs associated with traveling to/from the George Fox University campus.

You are able to stop participation in the study at any time and for any reason. No information that would identify you will be made public, and we do not feel there is more than minimal risk associated with this study.
