Come hear international human rights activist speak on campus Sept. 18

September 4th, 2024

The Department of Social Work invites you to a upcoming event, “Social Work Fall Diversity Dialogue: Public Theology and Public Policy for Racial Justice with Ekemini Uwan,” on Wednesday, Sept. 18, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Hoover 105.

Uwan is a public theologian, international human rights activist, and coauthor of the 2023 NAACP image award nominated book Truths Table: Black Women’s Musing on Life, Love and Liberation. She serves as the special advisor for The Aspen Institute’s Racial Justice and Religion Collective.

Uwan is a charter member of the International Civil Working Group of the Permanent Forum for People of African Descent at the United Nations and is a reparations activist whose work spans the globe, as she has advocated for global reparations on behalf of Africans and African descendants on the floor of the United Nations three times.

As one who is passionate about theology, Uwan has a fierce commitment to the gospel and its implications for issues pertaining to reparations, racial injustice, anti-Black racism and white supremacy. She believes that theology can and does speak to our present-day culture, social and political issues.

Don’t miss this opportunity to dialogue with an accomplished social writer and activist. For further information and questions, contact Kim Rapp at rappk@georgefox.edu.

A resource for employees: Students in Distress folder

September 3rd, 2024

The Office of Student Life would like to provide information about what we can do at George Fox when concerns arise about a student’s behavior. While some of the information is more specific to traditional undergraduate students (due to the residential nature of these programs, etc.), some of the information applies to graduate and accelerated online degree students and programs as well.

In the past, we have delivered brightly colored folders with information for staff and faculty to use as a resource in situations where a student in crisis needs intervention. There was also information about employee responsibilities regarding FERPA and guidance for campus emergencies.

To reduce paper and make these materials accessible to you online, we have created a folder in Google Drive. Please bookmark this folder for quick reference. You must use your George Fox email to log into the folder.

For more information, please contact Jere Witherspoon at jwitherspoon@georgefox.edu or 503-554-2316.

Enjoy basketball? Come to Hadlock for Noon Hoops

September 3rd, 2024

George Fox’s longest-running wellness program (over 35 years), Noon Hoops, brings university employees and graduate students together to play basketball every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at noon.

We’d like to inform anyone who recently joined the George Fox community of this special program and invite you to come get in on the fun! Games are friendly and mildly competitive (and much more enjoyable than church or city leagues). We are all about getting exercise and having fun.

Players’ skill levels vary, so we try creating matchups between people with similar abilities. Games are to 11 by twos and threes. Bring your gear (there are locker rooms and showers), and we’ll see you on the courts at Hadlock Student Center.

If you have any questions, reach out to Bill Buhrow at bbuhrow@georgefox.edu.
