Hello! The Sexual Misconduct CARE team, in partnership with the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium (HEDS), is conducting a Sexual Assault Campus Climate Survey. This is a completely anonymous survey conducted by a third party to help us to access our efforts and help our team create a more supportive and safe campus.

For filling out the survey you will have the opportunity to enter a drawing for one of six $25 Amazon gift cards. You will be directed to a separate form to enter; please note that by entering the drawing we will know you took the survey, but your name will not be connected to your entry.

To take the survey, please check your student email. Each student has received an email with a unique link to take it.

The campus community is invited to a complimentary lunch with guest Dr. Michael Lamb on Tuesday, Feb. 13.

The lunch event, titled “What’s Hope Got to Do with It: Politics in a Time of Presumption and Despair,” runs from noon to 1:20 p.m. in Canyon Commons 103. During the session, our very own Dr. Joseph Clair will interview Lamb about his most recent book, A Commonwealth of Hope: Augustine’s Political Thought, which offers a novel interpretation of Augustine’s political thought and recovers his virtue of hope to inform contemporary politics. Lamb’s research focuses on the ethics of citizenship and the role of virtues in public life.

Guests are invited to go through the cafeteria line and join us for the talk, which will begin shortly after noon.

In addition, faculty are also invited and encouraged to join Lamb at 3 p.m. in Canyon Commons 103 that afternoon for a discussion, “Character Formation in the University: Ten Lessons from the Front Lines.”

Lamb is the F. M. Kirby Foundation Chair of Leadership and Character, executive director of the Program for Leadership and Character, and associate professor of interdisciplinary humanities at Wake Forest University. He is also an associate fellow of the Oxford Character Project.

He holds a PhD in politics from Princeton University, a BA in political science from Rhodes College, and a second BA in philosophy and theology from the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar.

Chances are, your child’s heart is healthy. But a small percentage of young people have hidden heart defects that put their lives at risk – especially during physical exertion.

Since 2012, Providence’s Play Smart program has provided over 40,000 free heart screenings by checking a simple, painless cardiac test, an electrocardiogram. We have diagnosed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, long QT syndrome, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, and many other conditions that can be treated or monitored.

To register for a free screening, offered between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. this Saturday, Feb. 10, visit this page. The screening is free for ages 12-18. It will be done at Providence’s Basecamp Prevention and Wellness facility at 9427 S.W. Barnes Road, in Portland.

Interested in trying mountaineering? By completing this application, you could have the opportunity to attend this once-in-a-lifetime trip and educational experience for free. The outing includes expert guidance, transportation, camping, food, and most of the necessary gear.

Feeling like spreading the love of Jesus Christ? Come write a letter of encouragement for the seniors at Friendsview!

The athletic department will have a writing station set up outside Klages tomorrow (Wednesday) from 8 to 11:30 a.m., for all students to come write a personal letter of love and encouragement. Please note that the goal is to accumulate at least 500 letters so that every senior resident at Friendsview gets a letter.

If you have time between classes and can spare just a few minutes, we would love to have you stop by and contribute to this event. Stationery and pens/pencils will be provided, and there will also be coffee available for community use. All that we need you to bring is a heart that feels like spreading joy and love. Hope to see you there!

Doctor of Physical Therapy students at the university are conducting a study, “A Biomechanical Analysis of the Floor Transfer in Community-Dwelling Older Adults,” overseen by principal investigators Lyndsay Stutzenberger and Tyler Whited. We are interested in how older adults get up from the floor.

To participate in our study, you must

• Be 50-80 years of age
• Live independently or in an assisted living facility
• Be able to walk independently at least 15 feet with or without an assistive device
• Take a cognitive test
• Be willing to attempt to get up from a chair and from the floor

In order to participate, you must NOT have a diagnosis of a neurological condition or a current illness or health issue that would make performing study activities unsafe.

If you are interested in participating in this study and meet the above criteria, you would come to the Medical Sciences Building on Werth Boulevard, where we would ask you to sign an informed consent form, answer questions on a questionnaire, perform a short cognitive test, and have your vitals (blood pressure and heart rate) taken. Depending on the results of these assessments, you may or may not be eligible for the study.

If you are eligible, you will be asked to participate in one testing session that takes up to approximately one hour. During testing sessions you will fill out questionnaires and be asked to attempt to stand up from a chair without using your arms and get up from the floor. You will not be paid for being in this study or reimbursed for any costs associated with traveling to/from the George Fox campus.

You are able to stop participation in the study at any time and for any reason. No information that would identify you will be made public, and we do not feel there is more than minimal risk associated with this study.

Credit report scores hold a lot of power. They can help buy that first home but can also take away financial opportunities.

In a free Canopy webinar session, Solving the Mystery of Credit Reports, we’ll provide an overview of credit bureaus, credit scoring, guidance to dispute inaccuracies, improving credit scores, and dealing with identity theft and fraud.

The session meets from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13, or from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22. You can register for either webinar here.

This program allows you to use your degree and get global experience while making a difference engaged in a long-term project. All positions last for two years, and all give you access to pay down your student loans by $5,000-plus while you serve! Due to continuing maintenance on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the Department of Education has announced that schools will not receive applicant FAFSA data until the first half of March.

What this means for students:

• Aid packages will be delayed. The financial aid office will provide detailed timelines for financial aid offers closer to March, when FAFSA data is expected to come in.
• Continuing students will receive the same institutional aid next year, but federal and state aid will be determined by your new FAFSA information.
• If you made a mistake on your FAFSA, you will not be able to make corrections until it is processed.

Next steps:

• Check your emails for updates from George Fox’s financial aid office and the Department of Education. You will be notified via email when your FAFSA is sent to George Fox.
• Processes such as Verification and Professional Judgments will move quickly after George Fox receives your information, so complete your FAFSA as soon as possible!
• Don’t forget to apply for scholarships while you are waiting on your FAFSA to process.

High school seniors may be having difficulties selecting their school without all necessary financial information available to them, so it is all the more important that we live out our Be Known Promise with our applicants.

Additionally, while our continuing students can expect to receive the same institutional aid next year, their federal and state aid will be determined by their new FAFSA information. Applicants will also not be able to make corrections on their FAFSAs until they are processed.

Did you know we have off two days of classes for mid-semester break this year? Due to the longer break, University Recreation is hosting an overnight adventure trip for students to the Oregon Coast.

The trip is set for Thursday, Friday and Saturday (Feb. 15-17) of the break. Outdoor activities will include camping, bodyboarding, surfing, hiking, camp cooking, and lots of warm campfires. We will provide all of the transportation, food, equipment and more!

The Department of Language and Literature would like to remind you that registration is open for our Language Enrichment Classes for K-12. If you have a child in elementary, middle or high school interested in learning Spanish or expanding their knowledge of literature and writing, you will find something here for them.
